The playoffs are perfect just the way they are. If this happens, It's obviously going to make only the #1 seed have a first round bye.
That wouldn't work because then you are basically giving everyone an off week between the playoffs and actual first round to let two play in games take place. You can't make teams play week 17, a play in game, and a wild card game all within 7-10 days. The only way this works is if you only have the top seed get a bye. I think it's ridiculous.
this weekend nbc got 2 games and cbs/fox each got 1 game. i guarantee that cbs and fox are not cool with that arrangement for opening weekend. also nbc can't be happy because they disappear from the playoffs after wild card weekend.
This is all built into the carrier contracts and the bidding that takes places to show NFL games. It's not like the NFL decided last week to give NBC two of these games and CBS/Fox one. Next round of bidding/contracts, if channels want more playoff games, they just need to offer more money.
I'm... kind of ok with it. Saturday and Sunday games at noon, 3pm, and 7pm? Yes plz. This year the Steelers (8-8) and the Cardinals (10-6) would have gotten in and played the Patriots and Panthers, respectively. Don't get me wrong, I'd like to stay with the current format, this just slightly devalues the #2 seed... I can live with it. But I get the feeling it will lead to a 16 team playoff, which would suck.
It's not just slight devaluation. It's making them play another whole game to potentially get to the SB. Having only one team get a bye would significantly add to the reward of getting the best overall record. Would be interesting to see if they would stop rewarding division winners with automatic higher seed and home field. But the biggest sticking point is that more teams would have to play more games... Which leads to more potential injury (but, of course, more games = more money for the NFL).
14 teams, you start getting dangerously close to the NBA making the regular season a meaningless formality,
While I think the system is great as it is...this statement is just dumb. You want a multi-billion dollar industry to stop wanting to be more profitable? This isn't a charity nor a non-profit.
Jerry is trying to do anything he can to inch the cowboys closer to the playoffs. This is just unnecessary and begins to devalue the regular season. Almost half the teams in each conference would make the playoffs if they go through with this. I mean do we really need to see the Patriots kick the crap out of the Steelers or Ravens again this season or see Tony Romo and the might cowboys defense take on the Panthers? Here's an idea, why don't they use the regular season as seeding for a tournament where all the teams get in. We could call it NFL madness or January madness. You combine the NFL with the upsets of the NCAA tournament! Cha-Ching $$$$$
They don't need to re-seed. The NFL should copy the NBA and give home-field advantage to the team with the better record, tie would go to the division winner. 49ers/Packers should have been in SFO and Saints/Eagles should have been played at NO.
