If you would prefer to root for a team where the head coach doesn't hire anyone he is familiar with, perhaps you should root for the...um...the...well, maybe you should just quit rooting for all sports teams.

As for this fellow Bernhardt, he is a long time friend of obrien and is a special assistant. Not a coach anymore. He is basically a sounding board and a critic, looking at things and advising. Several coaches have this type of guy in the organization.

    Read the bio JR left.

This guy can only help BOB be a better coach. Bilicheck has the same thing. It is a guy who will tell the HC the truth and knows BOB long enough to hold him accountable for how he does things.

its not that, its how it was put... he said, "I'll be there the whole time," that seems to me like he doesn't have to worry about being held accountable just like all of Gary's friends.

This guy isn't a coach. He is just another set of eyes that BOB trusts and can tell him the truth even though he may not like it. Accountability is something this past regime lacked greatly.

    Cant find it....

Regardless, that's always great news. In a league filled with yes men its always good to have someone that's there to constantly keep things in prospective for you, without being a hater.

I'm assuming he was with him during his tenure at Penn as well.

Would tend to agree. Raheem Morris immediately went from Head Coach (Bucs) to DB Coach (Redskins). Tom Cable also went directly from being Head Coach (Raiders) to OL Coach (Seattle). Although Cable was given "Asst. Coach" title as well. Going immediately from NFL Head Coach to NFL position coach is uncommon, but it's not as "rare" as some might think.

Most of the time, if they go to position coach status, they are also assistant head coaches...like Rod Marinelli that was named, and Tom Cable that you listed. Yes, it does happen, but I think once youve climbed the coaching ladder, it's very uncommon to go back to being a position coach for a number of reasons.

I think, out of all these names listed in this thread, we've only had 2 of them that went on to become true position coaches after being head coaches. I'd still say that it's very rare for that to happen, considering how many coaches get fired and hired on a yearly basis.

Also will tend to happen when a coach gets a HC job without being a head coordinator first.

Munchack went from OL coach to HC. He's never been an offensive coordinator, nor as he ever called plays, so I don't see why he would be more suited for that role now.

Right now, he's either going to be a OL coach in the NFL or a HC in college.

The assistant hc thing is just a title. It doesn't mean anything, just justifies extra Money.

Jim zorn is another one that went back to being a position coach.

Did Kubiak have someone like that...??? It must have been the special teams coach if it was.

None of those guys (Caldwell, Marinelli, Morris, Cable) were coordinators before being HC's. It's really not surprising that they didn't immediately become coordinators after they lost their HC gigs.

In the NFL, it also justifies moving from team to team for jobs that aren't direct promotions from your current position (i.e. a DC of team A can't leave Team A to be the DC of Team B since it is a lateral move, however, if he is also named as an Assistant Coach and DC of Team B, the move is now allowed).

Or the reverse. The Ravens made Caldwell Assistant HC/QB Coach so that another team couldn't hire him as OC. The Cowboys did the same with Marinelli.

610 radio just said Pepper Johnson is a possible option at Defensive Coordinator if they can't get Romeo Crennel to come on board.

Patriots South  This is the kind of hire I'm not sure about. He's never been a DC, never called plays.
