Charles Strong is only nine years younger than Mack Brown!? Brown looks like he could be his grandad.
Just doesn't seem like the right choice for UT. Not sure why. Maybe because he looks so young, but he actually isn't. What are his Texas ties again? For one thing, for as long as I can remember UT coaches had hair, in the same style. My whole life. Which has been long. Whatever, I don't care if UT is successful or not. Not in the Darrell Royal "good ole boy" mold, for sure.
I think he's a great choice, now UT may actually recruit the best players IN THE COUNTRY, instead of just the guys that attend their summer camps....
A&M chose Sumlin over Strong a couple years ago. Definitely seems like a fallback option compared to some of the other names tossed out there
I don't think Strong was ever considered, and rightly so. Considering Sumlin was 35-16 at the time and Charlie Strong was 14-12, I'd say that's probably a no brainer.
Saban and Fisher were never available, despite the rumors. Given that, Strong was the best hire. New mentality to a stagnant program that just seemed happy to enjoy UT many amenities. Hopefully he can get Texas back to playing top flight defense, which we haven't had in years.
Not to mention, Sumlin had just got done recruiting the state of Texas extremely heavy, and was an offensive guy. I think they made the right choice for coach, as well as I think UT made the right choice for theirs.
I love the hire. What I really like most is the fact that despite all of the media speculation of who UT should hire and who the regents wanted, Steve Patterson conducted the search his way and chose the Coach that HE wanted. The 8 man comitte was never included in the search until Patterson had made his choice. He never considered Fisher or Malzahn, when Briles indicated that he would take the job if it was offered but was not willing to interview, Patterson said no thanks. This was about Patterson chosing a coach that he was willing to risk his job on, not about making meeting some hidden agenda for some of the power brokers at the college. Charlie Strong represents a change in direction and attitude IMO that the Longhorns dearly need.
Patterson will be proven correct, just like he was proven correct when he hired Rudy T and drafted Robert Horry and Sam Cassell
Brown isn't old, that's the thing. Saban colors his hair and everyone assumes he must be 20 years younger than Mack. Pete Carrol eats berries, washes his hair with California beach water and does yoga so everyone assumes he's younger than Mack. They're all the same damn age! Mack Brown should coach again. He's a young, spry fox.
Strong was considered and would have almost certainly been offered a deal (not sure he'd accept) if they couldn't get Sumlin (which was never a concern).

lol now the Statesman is trying to portray this as UT-Austin branch rejected Saban and Jimbo? that's just hilarious.
Are you sure you're not thinking about Kirby Smart? I can't find anything saying Strong was considered for A&M job.
Wow, I can see why Strong isn't considered a media darling, he sounds like a robot up there. A robot. But a football robot. Impressive how he handled the job switch. Very classy and respectful.
