If you love live music and stand up comedy then Austin is the place to go. Also just a safer place in general. I love Houston due to its sports teams and diverse culture but Austin wins. Also did I mention it was safer then Houston. I have never felt like I was going to get robbed or stabbed walking around like Houston. But I still love Houston.
it depends on your perspective. if you like american apparel v-neck tees, think zoey deschaniel is anything other than annoying as s*** and listen to the new grizzly bear on cassette than you probably think "hipster" is a good thing. i prefer to call hipsters "try-hards" - it really takes alot of effort to look like you dont give a damn this much! AND DO NOT THINK YOU ARE ABOVE THIS HOUSTON - I SEE JUST AS MANY OF THEM INSIDE THE LOOP AS I DO IN AUSTIN!!!!!!!!!!!!
i have never been robbed or stabbed in houston, but i have been robbed and held hostage at gunpoint in my own home and witnessed a murder here in austin!
I have never been robbed but the amount of things I've seen happen in SW Houston keeps me on my toes at night in Houston. I've seen more guns pulled out in Houston then I have in Austin. And I go anywhere in both cities for music or comedy. But nothing beats NO. That places scares me.
Not sure if it's red nation or reference to Houston Rockets but is there like an alarming rate of guys wearing red denim pants now because I have one, lol.
Austin is getting very big. Still cool place, but it's starting to have that big city feel, meaning long commutes and lots strip centers. People hold Houston's size against it, inner loop houston (westside of course) is as cool a place as you can find. I can't stand when people move to the suburbs, and then complain about the suburbs.
Austin from the late 80's to pre-dotcom was a much more bearable place. But, Austin grew too fast to support the influx. At least some of it's old charm has been preserved. Here in Houston, neighborhoods disappear so fast only to be replaced with homogeneous townhouse/condos or monolithic apartment complexes.
It's a fake term meant to mock a particular wardrobe, and actually reveals more about the person using it: like preppy, goth, stoner or most confusingly fratboy.
I agree about NOLA. Its a place that is nice to visit for a few days, but I could never live there. Its just gross. Granted, I've never ventured much outside of the tourist areas.
I'm a native Houstonian, with loads of relatives and friends in the area, but I moved to Austin in 1980, and would never move back to Houston. Love to visit, though. I have to chuckle reading the comments about missing the "Austin of the 1980's." I started coming here in the mid-'60's, and 1980 was the year I noticed an appreciable change in the city, mostly due to growth that has accelerated year and year ever since. Still, it's not a gigantic "octopus" of a city, spreading in all directions for 50 miles over the flat landscape, but a city still small enough and compact enough to get pretty much anywhere fairly quickly if you know the best routes to travel. You have access to the best BBQ on the planet, beautiful lakes that are usually filled with more than adequate water, the wonderful towns and villages in the Hill Country, and many, many more things that are appealing. Austin also has the greatest concentration of beautiful females in Texas. I'm not saying there are more hot chicks than Houston, but rather that they're concentrated here, and easy to mingle with. I've lost track of the number of times I've nearly run into something in my car due to the "scenery," or found myself standing for 10 minutes on a sidewalk gazing at them walking around West 5th and 6th, in the area centered around Waterloo Records. And the politics fit me like a glove, at least compared to any other city and county in the state. Wouldn't live anywhere else in Texas, but I still miss Houston terribly. I just don't miss it enough to move back there after 34 years here.
Of course. Did you know Houston is also one of the biggest cities in the country that of course leads to get this, more crime. Incredible. But if I had to choose I'd rather be on 12th and Chicon then any of the Wards. And I've been to both. Just my preference.
But because of our size and nature, you can generally move 15-45 mins to our neighboring buddies like Sugar Land or Katy hence why people always joke about evacuating to Katy. Crime doesn't have to follow you wherever you go, just gotta pick your spots.
Yeah but I'm not talking about living there. I lived in North Austin for three years and loved it. Didn't have to deal with traffic as much and could still be downtown in 20 minutes. I also grew up in the surrounding Houston area so I traveled all around Houston. My experiences deal mostly with shows. Been all around both cities for music and have seen more crazy stuff in Houston then Austin. **** I once saw a fight happen while watching Passion Pit in Houston. Who the hell fights during Passion Pit? People from Houston. .
Now I'm even more confused. What the hell is a "fake term"? I've heard many people use it and it's in Merriam Webster. What is the difference between a real term and a fake term and who determines these things? When Jerry Seinfeld says hipsters have taken over Brooklyn, what does that reveal about him? That he's old, I guess, but the statement still reveals more about Brooklyn than Jerry. Old drivers....
Austin is located in a great spot as far as landscaping and scenery goes. Other than that its a little overrated for my taste, but to each their own.
i'm hating the allergies now, but i'm happier in austin than i was in houston. it all depends on your situation though. but if you are from htown, it's worth it to live somewhere else for a little bit.
