Is it because of our Metropolis stature and crime that people would rather flock to Austin for all the cool festivities and the music? Really, what makes Austin that much more attractive than us? I can assure you that our people are a lot nicer in Houston than it is in Austin. I don't really buy in all the hipster stuff down there, we got our own share of hipster culture here in Houston. If Austin is weird than Houston must be weirder.
Austin has jumped the shark. It was cool in the 80s. It's now got Houston's traffic (although worse) combined with Dallas' snobby douchers. And worse allergies than either.
In Texas, there's Huntsville and then there's everything else. Shenanigan's Humphrey's Jolly Fox Five Loaves Deli Judy's Ice Cream (next to Quizno's) Olive Garden and Chili's I mean, ****, what else is there in life?
Austin is just like any other big and emerging city. Yes, there's traffic (though I disagree that it's worse than Houston or Dallas). Yes, there are snobby douches. Are there not plenty all over Houston? I grew up in The Woodlands. I seem to remember a healthy amount of them there and it only seems to be getting worse. Have you been to The a Waterway? That is the douchiest place I've ever been. Can't argue about allergies. Cedar season is in full affect and it's been a doozy so far. texxx has an unhealthy obsession with all things Austin. That's been well documented here. I don't understand the "jump the shark" comment other than he's just incredibly jealous for some reason. People are moving here in droves. It's still a great city to find a great restaurant, a good band, make a good living, and raise a family. In the end, though, I completely agree with Haymitch...even if he mistakenly left Mt. Zion and Zach's off his list.
I'm not jelly I'm actually an investor in a hotel development in Austin, so I like the growth, I just wouldn't choose to live there personally
Yet you s**t on it every chance you get. That would seem to be a poor business decision...talking people out of going somewhere you have a investment that would require people visiting.
perhaps the most annoying humans on Earth are the Austin pumpers. You go to Austin, they ask you where you're from, they respond with "oh, I'm sorry" and then proceed to tell you why Austin is the most wonderful place. It's like clockwork. They all need a dickpunch.
If you say so. All I'm saying is that Austin has as much to offer as other cities. More than some and less than others. I'd rather live here than just about anywhere else in Texas. I miss Houston and have given strong consideration into moving my family back.
Hell yes it is, and it is not even close. Houston is just too big - there are pockets of awesome, but Austin is pretty much Awesome everywhere... Wait - uh, that might make folks come here....Forget all of that, Austin sucks ! DD
I love Austin , but career growth potential wise Dallas and Houston are vastly superior for obvious reasons.
The DFW area has the worst allergy-inducing pollen in the entire country. Souce: worked with an allergy research lab for years.
I lived in Austin from 2011-2013 before moving back to Houston (downtown for a year, Crestview for a year). I miss Austin for various reasons, just like I missed Houston when I was living in Austin. They both have their pluses and minuses. I think if you're young and enjoy the nightlife (especially live music), then Austin is the clear winner. If you're a little older and really big into trying great restaurants, Houston has them beat hands down. The food is really the thing I missed most about Houston. If your criteria is only which one is "hipper," then that's Austin. It's got a lot more of a local flavor than Houston. On the flip side, housing in Houston is a lot cheaper and there are far more career opportunities. For the record, I do think the traffic is worse in Austin. Although it's a shockingly tiny city compared to Houston, the infrastructure is just not setup to deal with the influx of population that its experienced over the last decade or so. And the allergies sucked.
Yep. Austin is the worst. Houston is wayyy better. Sooooo don't move here and tell your friends not to either.
on that note, i remember reading an article a few years ago that talked about how employers can actually offer employees less here in austin b/c it is an attractive place to live. people are willing to move here and/or college graduates are willing to stay even if they could make more money in dallas or houston doing the same job. per capita austin is probably more hipper/hipster than houston, but in terms of population i would think houston sells more skinny jeans, fixed gear bikes and ironic mustache wax. im one of those austinites who can acknowledge that houston and even san antonio and fort worth are pretty cool...but dallas will always suck.
Not a fan of modern day Austin. Used to like it but i'll pass now. Still love central Texas. Houston has lot's more to offer but with all the people moving here I think things will get worse I.E. continued price increases, worse traffic and overall change in the inner loop which I like the way it is and never leave it
When my wife and I have discussed moving back, it was going to be in or close to The Woodlands because that's where my family is. But the insane growth due to Exxon has pretty much ended those talks. I think expectations are another 50,000 people in the next few years. I lived there when it was under 10,000. It's too much now.
I love The Woodlands but the growth really is starting to bother me. My daughter is in junior high so we will stick it out until she graduates but after that we are out of here. I still say it is the best place to live in Houston regardless.
Wait... is "hipster" a good thing now? I thought it was used as an insult for a particular type of douchebag.
