Not much incentive to coach this year then.

His years at New England and at KC as a defensive coordinator are very impressive. As a head coach _ not so much...

I love that Crennel's gonna be coaching in the Shrine game. I can't think of a better way to find talent deep in the draft. Especially with Rick and his scouting department being dead weight.

And he won't make the same $3.5 million next year as a coordinator. If he wants to sit out another year and get paid for doing nothing, he'll still probably get called for DC positions next year.

The more I think about it, the less I think I'd like Crennel as DC. As you're pointed out in the chart, he had 2 years with New England where the defense ranked high statistically but that's it. With our current personnel, the 2 gap 3-4 doesn't sound all that appealing to me. I'd rather move to a 4-3 than a 2 gap.

    I am so embarrassed :p

How many Patriot "retreads" are there now? I agree with you: that might not be the best thing. Definitely very worriesome after the Kubiak buddy system.

So you are saying that we gave up touchdowns because the offense turned the ball over a lot? What? It is more so because the defense did not do well in the redzone, period. Why were they not "exhausted" last year? I do not see exhaustion as an excuse for failure. NBA on a 4 games in 5 nights, maybe. One game a week in the NFL? Hardly. Also, considering that the defensive players are playing to keep their job, a bad offense shouldn't demoralize the defense to just keep giving up an extreme amount of touchdowns.

I think that we are saying the same thing, but in different terms. I agree with your statement: the OLB's are supposed to be making the plays under Wade (Demarcus Ware anybody?); however, they are not, and I was saying that the defence was relying on Watt too much to make plays, which should not be happening. I agree with what you are saying; we just said it in different ways.

Kinda. It's not exactly like O'Brien isn't bringing in his own guys/friends too :p. But I'm definitely more confident with his hires than Kubiak's.

Jeez, why is everybody so happy to see Wade go? He was a huge reason our defense turned around so drastically, even this year our defense wasn't bad. Everyone is blindly throwing faith behind the new staff, just because it isn't Kubiak/Schaub-esque doesn't mean we're going to suddenly dominate.

The fan base shouldn't beg the team to tank, then complain about losses. The team basically gave up after Week 8.

They're all making low-to-mid six figures working at one of the most prestigious careers possible. Also, being fired is almost inevitable for most of these guys after four or five years, and it's part of the process of improving the team. No reason any fan should feel bad about this or about celebrating it.

Agreed. Wade single handedly saved Kubiak's job a couple years ago. But I think you got to go the direction the new head coach wants.

The thing that BO'B has said he's bringing that both Kubiak and Phillips lacked is being versatile and having the ability to adapt and change on the fly. Wade was just as bad as Kubiak as far as not making adjustments. His defense is what it is. He's going to give you one look the entire game. The opposing offense knows what's coming. If they can't beat it, good news for us. But if they can, well, Wade's not going to start doing something different. He's going to stay in that one look. He's going to blitz and play man coverage. Whether it works or not, that's what he's going to do.

It's predicated on getting to the QB and making him force throws and make quick decisions. With the right personnel it can be quite effective. But if you're not getting to the QB, then the corners are always on an island and are open to getting burned repeatedly. And the thing with Wade's D is that if we're not getting to the QB, he really doesn't have another weapon in his arsenal.

What BO'B seems to prefer is a multiple look defense. Different fronts. Different coverages. Disguising the blitz. Create confusion not only in the quarterback but in the offensive line as well. He's said that as an offensive guy, the toughest defenses to call plays against were the ones that were multiple, so that's what he wants in his defense.

I remember some games this year (Arizona and some others) where the opposing team got pressure on us not because their line was overpowering ours or because we were missing blocks, but because we got confused about where the pressure was coming from and what our assignments were. You always want to win your individual matchups and get pressure via your physical ability. But it's also nice to have the ability to create pressure by scheming to confuse the opposition as well. And that's something you really weren't going to get with Wade's D.

He clearly wasn't a fit for what the philosophy of this team is going to be going forward.

I saw him shut down Payton Manning when he was DC of KC 3 years ago. He's a solid D coordinator. Was hoping for someone a bit more cutting edge, but he's certainly not a step back from Wade Phillips. I don't feel strongly, but Crennel would be a solid add.

I think Romeo is not a long term higher. A year or two at the most. He wants to HC again I'm sure. This is a good situation to build up his stock. It is also a good hire for BOB as a new HC to help alleviate the pressure of running the defense. Romeo is also a great players coach which should help in the transition for the players as well.

He's had 2 shots and has failed at both. A career .337 winning percentage. 27 games under .500. 3 out of 6 seasons at 4-12 or worse. I doubt he gets another HC opportunity.
