I am a huge fan of Strong's and wanted him badly over Sumlin (doh). Strong was TAMU's plan B (lulz on you suckers). I think he has a chance to be special at UT. And I'm sure nobody wants to say it but having a black coach was a big differentiator for TAMU in recruiting (my black UT friend tells me that). I think UT picked up on that and made it a tiny factor when considering Strong. Strong could be great. But I think the people inside UT might be scared ****less. They fired Mack Brown. They needed to followup with a big name. A proven name. Strong is not that guy. They made a leap of faith, one I believe in, but it's still scary. Strong was not UT's first choice. That's a problem. He also wont bring a sexy offense, I feel like UT's fanbase has been dying for a competent offense and am sure ESPN would love for them to be in a spread racking up 800 yards of offense. Strange that UT and USC wound up with B-tier coaches (no offense, I think both could be good, well more so Strong - but face the facts, these are B-tier names). You'd think UT and USC would have their pick of any coach in the world.
FWIW, Schefter just reported that James Franklin had interviewed with the TEXANS. They were apparently very impressed. Just thought it was relevant since he is (or was) a candidate for Texas.
At least UT tried for a home run (comically struck out) and still ended up with a very good candidate. I still don't get USC zeroing in on Sark from the beginning. UW fans were getting restless he might have been fired anyway.
It only seemed comical because of all the "sources" that reported things as done deals when in reality, they had no idea what was going on. I'm sure Hicks or some boosters contacted Saban's agent. There is nothing comical about that. The problem is the online proliferation of bull****. Guys make stuff up and get all the attention in the world. Bloggers whose website that never get any hits will all of a sudden get on the front page of google news. They do it because if they are wrong it won't matter. Since it was a "rumor". People should just be less stupid.
Maybe so, but if you are open-minded, we really don't know if the rumors were totally off base. Saban may have been very close to coming to UT. 5-10 years from now, the "real story" may come out from identified, credible sources. Regardless, I loved every minute of it.
The UT football program (maybe the athletic dept as a whole) lets too many people have a say in how things are run. Boosters, Regents, etc. I suspect they were the cause of the leaks and rumors. That's what made this such a clown show....and classless. There is a ton of good from having them, but they also bring a lot of bad. They are part of the University because the University plays to them.
He is a football coach, not an alchemist. I will say this though, I am looking forward to what he can do with our defense.
Darn. The "coaching up" spin was probably wishful thinking on my behalf. Still, if the spin worked on me, maybe it can work on some 5 star QB recruit. I'm still excited about Charlie's defensive prowess. My initial reaction is it's a good hire. ESPN said he was a great recruiter as well. I feel kind of stupid for buying into the Saban talk before, but my expectations became more reasonable after he stuck with Alabama. BTW, what's the best UT football forum to follow? I've been following Clutchfans Rockets board for years and love it. I was looking for the Longhorn equivalent.
Judging someones knowledge by the number of posts they have just proves my point further on how clueless you are. Dude keep talking because it just strenghtens my argument against Strong. Im sure it will make many colleges happy knowing that the biggest recruiting state in the nation will still be shipping all their talent out and that the Longhorns will not be the powerhouse that they could ( should) be. Now im gonna crawl back under the bridge with my 600 posts and hope that some of your great wealth of knowledge will fall thru the cracks.
I'm fine haha you knew this whole time I was just passing along what I read. Yeah I believed some of it because wait and see isn't fun and why not? Obviously not who I wanted but it's a solid hire
He'll inherit a good team and the nations 2nd best recruiting class from 2012. He will hopefully get the conference's best RB in gray next year (HOPEFULLY). He has just got to figure out the QB situation. Ash will likely have 2 years of eligibility left so Swoops will have to fight to play at all. Huge unknown is what he is going to be like in the house of potential recruits. There are so many amazing stories of Mack and his style. How parents trusted him and felt like he really cared and it worked for a long time. Strong has got to find a formula because Briles is going to hit recruits with "I turned Texas down" all day and night and Sumlin will keep doing well.
Strong's S&C coach, Pat Moorer that is likely coming. This guy is a badass. I felt like our S&C program was a problem last year under mad dog <object id="flashObj" width="640" height="390" classid="clsid27CDB6E-AE6D-11cf-96B8-444553540000" codebase="http://download.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/cabs/flash/swflash.cab#version=9,0,47,0"><param name="movie" value="http://c.brightcove.com/services/viewer/federated_f9?isSlim=1" /><param name="bgcolor" value="#FFFFFF" /><param name="flashVars" value="videoId=1861682221001&playerID=2207682275001&playerKey=AQ~~,AAAABvaL8JE~,ufBHq_I6Fnwgpz2JFHz_Jerf-MHxK_Ad&domain=embed&dynamicStreaming=true" /><param name="base" value="http://admin.brightcove.com" /><param name="seamlesstabbing" value="false" /><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true" /><param name="swLiveConnect" value="true" /><param name="allowScriptAccess" value="always" /><embed src="http://c.brightcove.com/services/viewer/federated_f9?isSlim=1" bgcolor="#FFFFFF" flashVars="videoId=1861682221001&playerID=2207682275001&playerKey=AQ~~,AAAABvaL8JE~,ufBHq_I6Fnwgpz2JFHz_Jerf-MHxK_Ad&domain=embed&dynamicStreaming=true" base="http://admin.brightcove.com" name="flashObj" width="640" height="390" seamlesstabbing="false" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowFullScreen="true" swLiveConnect="true" allowScriptAccess="always" pluginspage="http://www.macromedia.com/shockwave/download/index.cgi?P1_Prod_Version=ShockwaveFlash"></embed></object> "When the team took the field, we noticed that cornerback Jordan Paschal was on crutches. Minutes later we looked over to our left and saw him sitting in what appeared to be a ditch, shovel in hand. He literally spent 60 minutes sitting in the blazing hot sun digging in that ditch. The upper-body torment must have been excruciating. And that’s what Moorer does. To promote an atmosphere where guys won’t milk their injuries to stay out of practice...."
