I essentially agree with you. Being an NFL QB is not the same as it was 40 years ago. The defenses and offensive systems are extremely complicated. You need to be able to do 10 things in a second. The ability to throw 60 yards doesn't matter if you cannot read defenses or lock on a single receiver. The best QB's in NFL history were not physical marvels like Warren Moon or Jim Everett... they had the ability to adjust, read defenses and make smart quick decisions. Just look at the list of the greatest QB's ever....... Montana, Manning, Brady, Unitas, Warner, Elway (physical specimen), Favre, Marino, Starr and Rodgers. Only a few were physical specimens.
Yeah... Case and I assume Carr played in spread offenses, where the read progression was 2 players deep and everything was out of the shotgun. And, surprise, Case has issues looking past the first or second player in his progression.
You called nothing _ that Florida team (the entire team) was playing like garbage and that's a fact... But you go right ahead and let it all ride on one game... Maybe O'Brien will do the same...
In defense of both Case and Carr... I don't think they were coached up very well once they got to the pro level. But are you saying that only college QBs that play in a pro style system are the only ones that succeed...? And the ones that play in spread offensive system don't...??? I think system helps but not the say all end all....
Obviously, you do. You don't understand that NFL scouts are capable of evaluating prospects from small schools, the same as they are from big schools. It's some big mystery to you that they're capable of figuring out which ones are worth drafting.
No one has done that. You suggested that he has played against weaker opponents and consistently crushed them. That was pointed pointed out as one of his weaknesses. We provided proof that he has done it against one of the nation's top defenses (who was ranked top 3 in the SEC that year http://sports.yahoo.com/ncaa/football/stats/byteam?cat1=defense&conference=I-A_SEC&year=2013) yet you still decide to negate the fact and proceed to make the same argument. I hope you nor anyone else, especially at the NFL level, would evaluate a QB based on one game. That would just be asking for another Jamarcus Russell saga. Of course his body of work is what you base your evaluation of Teddy but since you question that we have to bring other facts to the table. You see?
I think it's like finding a guy who's world champ at checkers, and bringing him in to play chess - you just don't know how he'll do. Maybe he'll get it right away and be the world champion of chess, maybe he'll have trouble at first and eventually figure it out, and maybe he'll never get it. He may eventually be better than all the guys who've been playing chess all their lives, but you just don't know. There is just a big hole in your knowledge when you evaluate a spread QB. At the very least, the fact that he hasn't been playing the complex NFL game means, unless he's just a spectacular talent, it is going to take a lot of work.
You had me... at least a bit... until this. I can certainly get on board with a don't "waste" a top pick on a QB argument... because they're such a crapshoot. Whereas, mental maturity aside, Jadavean Clowney will definitively have a meaningful positive impact on the field, right? And that seemed to be your argument. But now you're saying Manziel is a worthy #1 pick?? Also, if the theory really IS that you can pick up an elite, SB winning QB later in the draft (say rounds 2-4) as easy as in that first round, than there's nothing stopping the Texans from making a QB pick this year and also another one next year or the following in later rounds. That's not the BEST use of draft picks, no... but the Texans absolutely NEED a QB, this crop of QBs isn't as elite elite as the Luck one might have been, but these are very good QBs. To my eyes, Bridgewater is the pick. Accurately described as that 7 or 8/10 QB, but because of the mental aspect of the game could be a 9 or a 10. He has a will to win as much as Manziel or the next guy... ultimately it comes down to style preference I guess. If best case scenarios for each is Manziel = Favre/RG3 mix and Bridgewater = Rodgers (as in really really best case, and to keep a GB connection), I'll choose Bridgewater/Rodgers. I think he'll put on 10 pounds between now and the combine (if not more). He will show great or better than expected combine results. I read somewhere he ran a 4.55 40 at one point, with his savvy puts him squarely in the Russell Wilson/Andrew Luck category of very capable athlete, albeit not the RG3, Vick level. Watching him play, he reminds me a lot of Wilson as a "runner"... in that he keeps his head up, prefers to make plays with his arm, but when he does run is canny in his ability to go down and not get hit. Maybe canny isn't the best word... as it is just him sliding and not getting hit... that's not canny, that's just smart. But his poise, accuracy, velocity, yada yada all seem to make him a very Wilson, Luck-esque ready to compete at a high level immediately type player. His frame is the real concern...
What is your definition of "awareness" exactly? Being aware of a foreign object approaching you (i.e. a player) doesn't have anything to do with the talent level of that foreign object. And Case actually did show signs of good awareness at times, the problem was that he wasn't making the right reads all the time and was hanging onto the ball too much. Carr was an athlete but couldn't read defenses and wasn't the most studious of players
I didn't negate it... But one game against top talent is not enough for me... But I'm not the GM... And I originally brought up his strength of schedule in comparison to Johnny who lead the nation for two freaking years in opponent adjusted QBR... Something that Luck, Wilson, and Kapernick has done when they were in college.
My argument for Johnny is only if the Texans feel they HAVE to take a quarterback with the #1 overall pick but I do worry about his size... As a Texans fan _ I would rather them trade back and get more picks and that's what I believe they will do.
Foreign objects depending on talent level get to you at different speeds... Also defensive coaching schemes he has faced _ were they good or bad...
Gotcha. I wouldn't be opposed to that, either... THOUGH, I do think the "window is closing" line still can be used somewhat here. Obviously in reality the window closed, but there are still players on the team that you'd want to keep on the team for the next few years who are really good that would benefit from a very quick turnaround. Point? They need some QB, either through draft or signing/trade, they feel can come in and start immediately and accomplish such. If it's Bridgewater or Manziel at #1... fine. If it's trade back and find elsewhere, fine. I don't know or really care.... BUT would note my personal opinion is Bridgewater is capable of being a HOF like QB and in that has as much upside as any other QB in the draft (just in a different way than a Manziel... or a Mariotta would)... while also probably being the most ready to start of the bunch. And as much as HOF level QBs can come later in the draft, it isn't exactly common, either. If they grade Bridgewater, or Manziel to be even close to Luck/Rodgers/Manning/etc. like I hope they just make that choice.
Also... Rodgers set on the bench for a few years and watched Farve... No telling how he would have turned out if he would have went somewhere else and I believe Rodgers has a much bigger arm... But, they may also bring in a veteran so if they draft Teddy _ he may be on the bench for a while.
When Kareem Jackson is the best player in the secondary _ that window has closed.... Lol... The only young legit talent we have on this team is J.J. and Brown, the rest are either old are injured... But I trust O'Brien when it comes to QBs... He actually develops QBs unlike that last guy we had. So if O'Brien wants Bridgewater _ I'm good with it... But this team has alot of holes to fill and if they spend that number 1 pick on a quarterback this year _ we'll probably be drafting in the top 5 next year discussing on rather we should draft Famous, Marcus, or Hundley.
True, too, I guess. But NFL always seems to be about QB, injuries. If injured players come back and stay healthy, and if QB play improves, honestly the difference between 2-14 and 10-6 isn't that hard to see. Seahawks, Chiefs, Colts, Cardinals, Raiders, Jags (twice), Pats, Titans last game... all very winnable as it turned out. But you don't win all winnable games, and they were a couple miracles away from being 0-16, so I see all sides. That doesn't mean superbowl here we come, or we have a 5 year window or even a window at all... it just recognizes that IF Manning, Cushing, Joseph, Foster can all somehow be healthy and at 90% for a full season, and if they can add a couple of other right pieces through draft and FA, a quick turnaround is very possible.
After watching Bridgewater and Manziels performances against Florida in 2012, I have come to the conclusion that Bridgewater is going to be much better in the nfl.
You're right about that... But Tampa can say the same thing. They lost close games as well. And if you look at the talent on their roster compared to ours _ YIKES... KC had a major turn around by just adding a QB and not even a great QB _ but again they have alot of talent (along with an easy schedule)... But, maybe these same players will look alot different being coached by O'Brien than Kubiak. And it's being reported Bob has said he's open to trading the number one pick....
