I hear ya, and I agree. Nothing surprises me from any college coach at this point. I guess the only distinction is that previously when Briles has said that it's been when asked....here he's offering it up not as a response, but as an affirmative statement on its own. I don't know if that means something or not...it's just a tiny difference in context. What is interesting is that McLain (who I always take with a grain of salt) just posted an article (below) saying Briles is staying put. Briles, who also was at the University of Houston for five years before moving to Baylor, is 76-44 in his six seasons at Baylor. The Bears finished 11-2 and lost 52-42 to Central Florida in the Fiesta Bowl.
Waco, Texas - Baylor University head football coach Art Briles released this statement this morning concerning media speculation surrounding his interest in other college or professional coaching opportunities following the Bears' most successful season in school history: "I have no desire to pursue other coaching positions," Baylor coach Art Briles said. "As I've said many times, I am both humbled and honored to be the head coach at Baylor University, and believe we have something special going here. I look forward to leading the Bears onto the field next fall at McLane Stadium and defending our Big 12 championship that our players and coaches worked so hard to win this season. Decent amount of smoke around Jim Mora. I don't know a ton about the guy, but he seems like an ethical guy with a Mack Brown-type personality. Hope he knows his X's and O's.
LOL @ Texas being the "Premiere coaching job" in the country. Nobody wants to deal with the politics, the regents nor the hassle of the LHN. I wouldn't be surprised if Mack has leaked some inside info. to some of his "friends" in the business either.
A tiny difference, but it's lessened by the fact that in 2007 Briles did not possess the ability to speak to the public without going through the media. And it's not as if Briles hasn't been asked about his job status at Baylor a million times already, so making a blanket statement isn't surprising. I would have been more encouraged if he said something more specific or to the point. Instead, it's just more "factually correct" non-answer lawyer speak (no offense). Briles has the right to CYOA, but I think statements like that are unnecessarily misleading, and as a Baylor fan, I'd be very annoyed. Part of what burned me more about Briles' departure over Sumlin's is that Sumlin never gave anyone false hope. He was very matter of fact about it. Briles pumped everyone full of sunshine in the lead-up to his departure. Left a sour taste in my mouth. Hope you don't have to go through the same thing. I don't know how plugged in McClain is with Baylor, but if it's anything like his Texans relationship, I'd be sweating bullets right now. Edit: And just like that, Briles does exactly what I wanted him to do. Good for you, Art. And good for you, Baylor. So who is the UT front-runner now?
Yes, nobody wants to come coach at Texas. How lucky for all of the other schools that they don't have politics or regents.
so plans A (Saban) and B (Briles) have fallen flat. What's the fallback plan C? One of the Harbaughs? Is plan D Charlie Strong?
You've got to admit, there's a little case of UT wanting the kingdom but not wanting God in it. You cant go to UT and just coach. You have to dance, you have to deal with LHN and you have to coach. UT basically chased out Missouri, Texas A&M, Nebraska and Colorado. That wasn't good for the conference. Those are all high caliber programs. Yes, even Colorado. UT is a top 3 position, probably #1. No doubt. But coaching at USC sure seems like a lot more fun these days.
Well, one, I like that he is young and would have a chance to really build a legacy -- not just come in for a few years like a mercenary. I also am very impressed by what he has done at Vandy. Not only that he rebuilt a bad school, but that he did so at one with such high academic standards.
Sumlin ****ed that team over when he left. He let it be a distraction all week before the championship game and it cost UH a BCS berth.
It's pretty widely accepted that coaching at UT involves a lot more nonsense than coaching at most other places. Mack Brown talked to Red McCombs and Joe Jamail *every single day*. That may not be required, but it's ridiculous that it was even considered reasonable.
Negatory. Southern Miss was just a good team. Unlike when UH went to Tulsa in 2007 to play for a division title. Word got out that Briles had accepted the Baylor job, and the players, by their own admission, opened a giant can of quit, losing 7-56. Sumlin kept quiet, as he should have, instead of blowing smoke up people's butts. To blame that loss on him craps on the players from both Southern Miss (a legitimately good team) and Houston (if a BCS game is on the line and you let the media torpedo your focus, you deserve to lose). You can't control what other people say, but you can control how you respond and react to it. I'll take Sumlin's departure every single time over Briles'.
The only remotely interesting candidate left to me is Gruden (and yes, it's a longshot). Mora/Franklin/Strong all would be fairly disappointing to me. None have proven the ability to win at the highest levels, and none really give the program an identity or anything you can rely on consistently (Briles = spread offense; Saban = stingy defense; etc). I think making Vandy decent by beating up on an endless supply of terrible teams is very different than demonstrating you can outcoach the Sabans and Stoops and Meyers of the world.
