I understand what +/- means. I'm just saying that if NBA teams can add 5 wins by paying coaches a lot of money, they should be doing it. (They won't, because most are too cheap).
Like someone said earlier I think it was actually a +/- of 5 rather than just straight up adding 5. So if the best adds 5 then the worst would subtract about 5 making it a 10 game difference. I don't think anyone is going to argue that Pop could do better than McHale with this roster, but he isn't available so who cares.
In the era of illegal zone defenses , I would agree with him. I disagree in this era of zone defenses A good coach can be the difference between a championship and an elimination. Also, if you know the offensive sets Adelman ran during his stint it is worth more than 5 wins. http://hoopspeak.com/2011/05/why-dallass-zone-defense-will-decide-finals/
I think Morey is making a big mistake if his formula tells him a good coach adds only 5 wins. Numbers aren't gospel truth until the formula behind it is tested.
Budenholzer was available, and he is as close to Pop as you will find. I was really pissed that he was hired by Hawks and didn't even know he was available. He probably got tired of waiting for Pop to retire.
IIRC, the Rockets (along with several other teams) were quite interested in Budenholzer back in 2011, but he decided not to pursue a head coaching gig that season, instead preferring to stay with the Spurs. You forgot to mention that the Rockets can make McHale a restricted free agent if they extend him a qualifying offer!
What are you talking about? I said it has nothing to do with Jeremy Lin because that's the normal expected response. I'm a Rockets fan first. If we're going to do the "join date game," why were you so late?
It's a sad state in the GARM when someone has to put a disclaimer that his ideas are in no way influenced by Jeremey Lin AND still have someone accuse him of being LOF
If you combine the benefits of a good offensive system and a good defensive system (both of which you need a competent coach to teach) , this would definitely translate to more than 5 wins. Coaches have had more control over the outcome of the game ever since the illegal defense rule was removed or liberalized. Its just hilarious that to justify incompetent coaching one has to argue that competence is not needed anyways.
I loved McHale as a commentator on NBA TV and he did a great job last year with the Rockets. That said, I think we need to move on. He's not a championship caliber coach.
He's talking about the difference between the worst coach and the best coach. He also have said that the more wins a team has, the less value the coach(at least in the regular season). Meaning a 50 win team will not become a 55 win team with a better coach, but a 25 win team may get 30 wins with the right coach. I mean, just look at the Clippers. They replaced the universally considered one of the worst coaches in the NBA with one of the best (Del Negro for Rivers). And now they look exactly like the team last year. I would be very surprised if they can get 57+5 or 62 wins this year. They probably won't even get to 57 wins. Morey's smarter at basketball than everyone here. Fans can harp on the right coach on the internet all the time. But smart GMs are much more interested in raising the talent of the roster instead.
Only a 5 win difference? No way. McFail has already cost this team that many wins this season and we're not even at the halfway point. Think a better head coach would've blown that Philly game by not fouling late? Or allowed Parsons to inbound the ball to Dwight in the final minute of that Lakers game? Or never made a single adjustment in the 4th quarter in Dallas? Or sat back and watched Harden go ISO-ball in the last 2 minutes against the Kings? Or had the team unprepared mentally to play at Utah and Sacramento or at home against the Mavs and Suns? Injuries and lazy, unfocused play by some of the Rockets have contributed to losses thus far, but don't tell me if we'd had a superior coaching staff that the difference would only be 5 wins max. And BTW, even if that was the difference, that's not a minor one. The Rockets are on pace to win about 50-51 games right now. Imagine instead if they finished with 55-56 wins. Think that wouldn't have huge implications in the playoff seedings(and homecourt advantage)?
Morey is smart as a general manager but he isn't infallible. He is too conceited if he thinks he knows more about coaching than Adelman, Karl , Popovich , or Spoelstra.
Its ironic that Dwane Casey , the man Mchale beat for the head coaching position, is the man credited with designing the Dallas zone that flustered the Miami Heat. http://usatoday30.usatoday.com/spor...nse-has-found-its-place-in-the-nba/52657598/1
There is more to coaching these days than giving the ball to the star player and letting him work. This is the era of zones, quasi-zones, and man-zones. Mchale is living in a world where teams simply spread the floor give the ball to the star player and go iso. This used to work before the NBA liberalized the illegal defense rule virtually allowing zone defenses. You need more than con man skills to teach a team how to play zone, how the players rotate, how they play the pick and roll on defense. And on offense, you need more than a pirated version of Adelman's read and react offense to be effective.
2 million dollars would be a good guess but of course it doesn't factor into salary cap implications.
