He never said otherwise. What he (and I) said was, UT will not grossly overpay for a coach (what many have suggested they would/should do) beyond what their resume suggests. A million bucks more than what they're making currently isn't really overpaying. That's probably what it would take to make most coaches switch programs. 8 million bucks, for anyone not named Nick Saban, is absolutely overpaying beyond reason and not something UT will likely do, despite how convinced they are he is "their guy" or how big and mighty their burnt orange wang is.
I agree with that. But FSU isn't going to lose their coach just because of money either - that's my point. UT is not going to pay an amount that FSU couldn't match if they want to and if Fisher really wanted to stay. If UT gets Fisher, it will because Fisher prefers to be at UT than FSU - not because UT was able to simply buy Fisher off. That's where things like Saban at $10MM nonsense was so ridiculous - that's basically just making an offer that would appeal to Saban for purely financial reasons. That's my example of what UT will not do.
It depends on the coach and it depends on your definition of grossly overpaying. And this may be semantics but the word Major used was substantial not grossly. Do they hold the same meaning to you? I don't know. IMO, if UT identifies him as the future of the Football team for the next 2 decades they would absolutely be willing to go at least 1 million a year more than anything FSU would be willing to offer. I think that is substantial and I don't think there is any question what so ever that UT would do that IF they believed strongly that Fisher is the right guy for UT. Now if they like Fisher (or any other coach they make an offer to) but not considerably more then half a dozen other coaches then obviously they would make him an offer and if it's turned down then they would move on to the next candidate. But if they really feel the coach they make their initial offer to is going to be THE ONE, then there is no question they will go substantially over anything that just about any other college including FSU, Baylor or Louisville would be willing to offer.
I don't think $1MM raise is overpaying for what you're asking him do you - you'd be asking him to leave a program where he has history and is established, is on the verge of a national title, and has a Heisman QB coming back - and asking him to rebuild a program. 20% raises are pretty common when hiring coaches away from other schools. But that's different than things like paying Saban $10MM a year, which was 100% more than he was making and is still 50% more than he's making now. It's not in the same realm as other coaches or what other schools would pay - that's what I'm saying UT will not do. UT's coach salary is not going to much more than what Ohio State or Michigan or Alabama would pay if they were hiring away Fisher or Briles or whomever it ends up being.
I couldn't disagree with the bolded section more. So your trying to tell me that UT would never offer Fisher 7 million a year but FSU would? FSU's athletic department is only worth a little over 50 million a season and at 4.1 million a season they are already paying Fisher about 8% of the departments worth. By comparison the UT athletic department is with 139 million so there really is no comparison when it comes to what UT can offer vs what FSU can offer. Not that UT is going to offer 10 million a season but if they did it would only represent about 7% of the departments worth with is still less than what FSU is spending at Fishers current salary. Do you think that there is any scenario that FSU would go above 5 million a year? If they did it wouldn't be buy much that's for sure. Do you think UT would offer Fisher a 6 million a year if they are sold that he is the coach for UT? I don't. If UT really want's Fisher or any other coach they will not let money be the reason they don't get that coach. By that I mean, they will absolutely offer Fisher enough money to make him have to make a financial decision. Do you want to stay at FSU (a program that you really love) or do you want an extra 10 million over the life of your contract? 1 million a season represents about a 25% increase in Fisher's salary which is significant. There is no question UT would offer that if they are sold on Fisher as the next UT coach.
When throwing around numbers like $50M program value and $139M program value, it almost seems like coaches are underpaid at these programs, believe it or not. Seems like there could be a bidding war that will only serve to make all the big program head coach salaries go up..... Does anybody know why Clemson's Dabo Swinney is not in consideration?
In that same article, it also states that other reports have the buyout at much higher. @awexler: #Horns RT @DavidSmoak: Drayton McLane, Jr. on our show this hour,"I feel very strongly that Art Briles will stay at Baylor for a long time."
Yeah, he has a track record of success. I just wondered why he wasn't on the list of final four candidates reported by ESPN (Fisher, Briles, Franklin, and Strong). From reading his bio on Wikipedia, it sounds like he might not be the biggest x's & o's/scheme kind of coach, but I think you need that enthusiastic recruiter head honcho at head coach. Just make sure you pick the right Coordinators (unlike Mack the last four years).
Man, I don't care what the sources say - Briles would leave Baylor for UT. He did the same thing to UH. Why would he behave differently now?
I've followed Clemson the last 3 years and this is exactly the impression I have of Dabo Swinney. Reminds me a lot of Mack Brown.
We all know Briles would leave if Texas offers him the money and job. Texas wants a bigger name. Briles will retire at Baylor if Texas gets their guy.
No, I'm saying neither would offer Fisher $7MM/yr. That's an example of going way of line of what he's worth. He's not Nick Saban. Value of an athletic department is irrelevant. At the end of the day, Fisher brings in more than $7MM more than generic coach X to FSU if he's in the national title mix. So from a pure financial perspective, he pays for himself. It still doesn't mean athletic departments will pay that. This is where I disagree. If UT has to pay him an unreasonable amount out of line with his fair market value to take the job, then he's coming primarily for the money, and UT will look elsewhere.
Standard "inside sources" disclaimer: http://collegesportsblog.dallasnews...-but-willing-to-visit-after-fiesta-bowl.html/ Report: Baylor’s Art Briles has not interviewed for Texas job, but willing to visit after Fiesta Bowl
OK, go call John Mackovic. He'll write you up some X's and O's. I remember when we didn't recruit and really sucked.
Here's a name for you - George O'Leary at UCF. Not only did he do great at some lame a.. school, but he can also appreciate a fine piece of a.. like Blake Bortles' girlfriend, Lindsey Duke..............
