Our problem is crappy shooters, not the type of shots we take. It doesn't matte rwhether it's 3 pt or 2 pt the problem here is the shooters aren't consistent. If that is the case it's better to have 3's, at least when the dudes are hot you're gonna whup some ass. If all you do is shoot mid-range shots, the opponent can get the reb and fast break to take the lead at least when they shoot the 3's their defenders in the 3 pt line so DH can try to get the reb with fewer opponents in the paint.
Good post. except, Houston doesn't have anyone that can make the 10-18 foot shot consistently. If our shooters can take 1 dribble and shoot, the defense can't charge full force to contest the 3. We have a very limited post game. There is no one can consistently score on a single coverage from 10-15 feet, so the defense can just focus their help defense at the rim. A Luis Scola or Carl Landry level post game would help this team a ton.
This season Harden has been money from mid-range. Now as far as the 3 pointer, oh boy, dude has been horrible. I wished we would have kept PPat because he hit that mid range J on a consistent basis before he was traded.
just look what happened to PPat, lol.... jk. i wouldn't mind having a mid-range game. there's only a few teams who are contenders without mid-range jumpers. i look and most of the championship teams had at least one very efficient mid-range shooter.
Yep. And Harden and Lin have to practice their floaters and fadeaways. They have the talent to make those with almost the same regularity as the layups. Harden can't depend on getting fouls, he may not always get the whistle in these games.
When threes aren't falling then what? The smart thing to do would be to step inside. If we aren't hitting threes we have no offense.
From a statistical standpoint no. If the threes aren't falling is there any reason to believe that the twos are going to fall? The Rockets just got through with a brutal December schedule and were playing tired while a couple of players were going through a shooting slump. No reason to panic. The Rockets do take mid-ranged shots when left wide open.
There is a difference between midrange game and midrange shots to me. Taking midrange shots b/c threes are not falling is like "meow" to me, and ok. Statistically, that probably will not make us a much better team anyways. Developing a midrange game is ... fine, but who on this team you want to modify his game to incorporate more midrange game. Mind you Harden seems to be taking a lot of those already. The only person that may make sense may be Parsons.
What shots does a team want to practice and then take during games? As long as Morey is the captain of this ship I feel sure that mid-ranged shots will be discouraged. Certainly a player has to shoot them if left wide open (a great shot by the way), but I rarely see a Rockets player take a contested mid-ranged shot unless the shot clock is going to expire.
TJ for sure, Harden, Lin and not so much Parsons now but if he starts to slump from beyond the arc, Parsons. TJ could do a lot of damage from mid-range and Lin and Harden have to try mid-range shots because they can both get to the hoop with regularity but if it is clogged, need to score in other ways and they can create space by stopping and popping, that's what CP3 and sometimes Parker and really Westbrook do a lot of. Dwight has tried a few, but that's a bad idea in my opinion. Beverley and Casspi also should shoot some too, Bev's floater isn't that consistent yet so it'll help him.
A bit wishful, IMHO. First off, Lin and company are no CP3, Parker and Westbrook. The skill sets are just not there for our personnel. I cannot picture Lin doing the stuff those superstars do consistently. We have all seen Lin shoot midrange. It's obvious that he does not shoot it well. TJ's shots right now are pretty much "you are open and hence do something" type of shots and he is pretty good at taking it to the basket strong. We don't run plays for TJ and he probably is not going to shoot well from midrange anyways. As for others, again statistically their two pointers will not fair much better than threes. That's not just based on their own personal data, but the entire league data. Again, we are talking about running some midrange plays, like David Wesley type of plays JVG used to run. I do not think we have the right personnel to do that right now.
Midrange floaters are probably the most difficult shots to make, more difficult than an catch and shoot threes.
