Briles also put Baylor on the map. If he's ever considered leaving for another school, he would just not agree to those terms in his contract. What's Baylor going to do? Fire him? Briles has 100% of the leverage over Baylor - a punitive buyout like that doesn't seem likely unless Briles was absolutely 100% confident he didn't and would never have interest in another job. And that might be possible - personality-wise, he seems a perfect fit there. But I don't think the buyout would be the restricting factor here - if that buyout exists, it's because Briles has zero interest in the Texas job.
Fisher signs a 5-yr deal with FSU that puts him around #7 in the salary rankings, which seems about right for him. http://espn.go.com/college-football...-signs-five-year-deal-florida-state-seminoles
Are you serious!? Didn't he read that Forbes article? Doesn't he know we're Texas? Who could have seen this coming.
Briles said "my focus today is being a Baylor Bear for a long time. You can't control what other people say." Anyway, I think he would take the money/job if gven the chance. He's probably last on Texas' list after Saban, Fisher, Strong. I think UT would prefer to not **** Baylor over. LOL I read that Fisher's new deal has no buyout, which makes it easier for him to leave. I'm assuming this is all a fluid situation.
I will tell you the thing that has annoyed me the most about this process is seeing: "We are the Joneses" and crap like "Did you hear that? That's the brink truck backing up." "That's (Briles' buyout) a rainy day fund for booster(s)."
Agreed, the whole thing is stupid. UT can pay more than everyone else, but they aren't going to just throw money at a coach just because they can. If they absolutely want Briles, and Briles says he's interested but only for Saban money, UT will pass. They aren't going to throw the whole market out of whack just because they can - in part because its stupid, and in part because it sets a bad precedent for the future.
Sources: Texas interested in Louisville coach Charlie Strong The Texas Longhorns have inquired about Louisville head coach Charlie Strong, sources told Yahoo Sports on Tuesday. Strong has been considered a possible candidate for the vacant Longhorns head coaching position since former coach Mack Brown's ousting. Sources also told Yahoo Sports that the Cardinals will be proactive in trying to keep Strong if he is offered the Texas job. Louisville signed Strong to an eight-year contract extension in early 2013 after the coach was approached about the then-vacant job at Tennessee. That extension bumped his annual base salary up to $3.7 million. Orangebloods.com is reporting that Texas athletic director Steve Patterson flew to an undisclosed location on Tuesday to interview Louisville coach Charlie Strong.
I like what Strong did with the development of Bridgewater and all as well as his time as Florida's DC, but he does not have the track record of success as Jimbo Fisher or Art Briles. In fact, Louisville kind of underwhelmed in team success this year by not going undefeated. Their bowl game was pretty good. I don't know. I think I might be disappointed if we ended up with Charlie as HC.
If UT wants a top college coach that's performing well in their current situation there are almost certainly going to have to over pay. It doesn't matter if it's Saban, Strong, Fisher, Briles or Myers; the Longhorns are going to have to over pay. So I don't know why you keep saying that UT will not over pay. Not only will they but they most assuredly are going to over pay. Your not suggesting they get a coach that is sitting on the couch like Chizick are you? Or someone who is not having success with his current program? If UT signs a big name coach they will over pay.
Define overpay. Briles might get $5MM/yr. He won't get $7MM. If that's what he wants, no matter how much UT wants him, they won't pay him - because he's not worth that. Of course part of the selling point will be UT offering a coach a raise from their current salary. But UT is not just going to go out and a pay a coach a ridiculous sum that would price major programs like FSU or Alabama out of the market. It just won't happen - they aren't going to be in a different stratosphere than the rest of the major college football programs out there. These rumors of $10MM/yr for Saban and stuff like that is just total garbage. If UT gets a coach, it will be because they sold them on the program and paid them a reasonable amount - not because their other school simply couldn't compete with the salary range.
First of all, there's a difference between salary and compensation, and second of all I absolutely think UT would see making a 3-4million dollar investment more per year salary wise to grow a product that generates over 180 million in profit
Won't happen. You'll see that in the next couple of weeks. Just as you'll see that all your "inside sources" that tell you Nick Saban will be the next coach are all nonsense.
I have faith in Steve Patterson . He'll hire the right guy. He'll find the Rudy t of college football and we will get olajuwons again
If he gets 5 million a season starting out then he is overpaid. And yes I think if UT hires him he will get at least 5 million. As of 2013 salaries that would make him the 3rd highest paid coach in the nation (taking into consideration that Mack Brown will fall off of that list) and 5 million absolutely would fall in the category of overpaying. Jimbo Fisher's extension is worth 4.1 million a year. Arkansas is paying Bret Bielema 5 million a year for the crappy ass job he is doing which makes him the 2nd highest coach which Mack Browns departure. So if Briles does get 5 million a season then that is being overpaid. Having said that, Briles and Jimbo Fisher are both making over 4 million a season after signing their new extensions. Charlie Strong is making 3.7 million a season and Louisville has already said they will be proactive in keeping Strong. Fisher IMO would be the hardest to get and be the most expensive. IMO. Look at his resume: 1. improved his program 4 straight years 2. 2 straight top 10 finishes with players he recruited 3. 1 Heisman Trophy winner (his own recruit) 4. 2 straight BCS Bowl. And if he wins the national championship then you add 5. 2 BCS Bowl wins 6. Undefeated in 4 Bowl games 7. National Championship. If Steve Patterson and the Regents are convinced that he is the guy to lead the Horns for the next two decades then I absolutely think they would be willing to make a significant offer to pry him away from FSU. Any offer to Fisher would start at 5.5 million a season IMO because that is what Mach was getting and that would be a 1.5 million a year raise over what FSU just gave him an extension for. Considering what Fisher has done, I could absolutely see the him eventually getting a 6 million a year offer from UT if that is what it would take to pry him away from FSU and 1.5 to 2 million a year represents a significant raise. I think it would take a similar offer to get Briles to move down the road from Waco to Austin IMO. He has a Heisman Trophy winner and just won his 1st Big 12 Championship and has Baylor of all schools in a BCS Bowl Game. He has proven that he was not just successful because of RGIII since the team this year is better than the one that featured RGIII. So to answer your question as to what is overpaying? IMO a million a year more than the extension one of those coaches just received would be overpaying based on market value but if thats the price it takes for Patterson and the Regents to get their coach then I think they do it. I'm not sure if another college would be willing to get into a bidding war against UT for their coach, but one thing I am certain about is that UT will not lose a coach they want because of money.
