lol, that's not true. During the Grizz game the analyst were talkng how the Rockets beat the spurs the day before. There have been times when they catalouge the toughest schedules in the NBA and show them on NBA TV.

I watched the game. They didn't move the ball well but they also had little energy. They didn't shoot well or play well. I accept the blowout. It' doesn't kill me that they loss by 30, blowouts happen. They have another game with OKC to show up and play better and hopefully win.

I would not want him on the Rockets. The guy is one of the most selfish, shoot-first, sticky ball, one-dimensional scorer players in the game and he has led the Knicks to absolutely nothing. He's not a good defensive player either. I've spent years watching him on the Knicks and I can't stand watching how he plays. He'll have a few great nights, but to say someone is an idiot because they don't like his style of play is harsh. Melo isn't all that.

You think being Mentally Strong is a buzzword?? Where the hell are you people going to school??? lol Your problem doesn't seem to be that you disagree with the sentiments just the wording, it's nitpicking.

For those of you who think that being soft or tough, or mentally strong are just buzzwords please see ROYCE WHITE. That is all.

    What does this even mean?

This is just typical of you people who love to throw cliches around without thinking.

Royce White's problem was mostly that he wasn't very motivated to get good at professional basketball. That and his mental illness-- which I am sure none of the psychologists diagnosed as "softness."

The guy did not hesitate to fight and push guys in the summer league. So he'd probably be called a "tough guy" or a "thug" if he were playing. He just never got motivated enough to improve his skills, fit in with the team or even stay in shape in RGV.

Plenty of NBA "JYD" types have had mental problems and professionalism/behavioral issues-- Ron Artest, Vernon Maxwell, etc. The difference is that these guys actually worked hard to become good at NBA basketball functioned well enough as pros and White did not.

Almost everyone has some form of anxiety. Which is why Dwight shoots 40 to 50% in game and 80% in practice. When faced with challenges people who have not been mentally prepared for it can fold easily even though it is within their power to do it. You guys are getting a little too hung up on the words when it seems everyone else knows what mental toughness means. I've been to Navy Bootcamp and I have trained for Military Police in Spain, I have also coached for several years and everyone seems to think that it's about the physically but in reality the training is meant more to mentally prepare you for your job. Sometimes singers can't sing in public, sometimes a very intelligent charismatic person can't give a speech to a group of people. It's because they are not mentally prepared to do it. THAT'S WHY YOU NEED A COACH. And sometimes a therapist if it's bad enough.

Mental toughness is the reason why people give speeches to a crowd of protesters fighting for their rights. They are being prepared to do something maybe they are not sure they can do. It called, passion, being fired up, toughness whatever you choose to call it but it gets you ready to fight even when your tired and down by 15, your head is held high because you know you fought and tried your best. Whenever you do your best their is a chance for a comeback.

2009 with Ron Artest had Grit, no Tracy all year and they lost Yao and fought hard and still pushed the eventual champions to the brink. This team doesn't have that, the minute someone gets injured all we get is excuses.

It was a joke dude. Interview cliches are intentionally vague because of the PC nature of things. I was poking fun of the people that use them to basically say nothing, while possibly inferring something.

And how, exactly, would YOU define mentally strong? If my IQ is higher than yours does that make me mentally stronger? If I can sustain my practice FT average in a game does that make me mentally strong? If I can visualize a 57 step swim lane flow chart in my head does that do it? How about if I can move objects with my mind?

My point is that those buzzwords or cliches or whatever you choose to call them mean different things to different people, and rarely literally mean what they sound like.

And Royce White is a bad example. Dude wasn't mentally weak, he is mentally ill.

When was the last time a team plays "not soft" in a loss? I have never seen an article that ever praised a talented team after a loss. The only times I've seen a loss being praised as not a bad one, is if it's the crappy team against the defending championship.

The OP's point doesn't even make sense. Were the Rockets losses back when they had Artest "hard losses"? I don't remember that. They were still getting their butts kicked back then in their losses too. Or were our blowouts against LA in the 2nd round somehow less soft because we had a tough player? Dude we were getting manhandled by two of the softest players to ever play in the NBA in that series: Odom and Gasol.

See? That's your definition of mental toughness. It's not wrong, but it's not the only way it can be defined. The military, police, structured organizations are absolutely good examples. But I don't believe it's that narrow. If a kid is bullied all through school and has the "mental toughness" to survive it and thrive, that's something he has inside. It didn't require training or perhaps even conditioning.

It's like any other talent. Some people have zero, some have tons, and there are shades in between. Almost anyone can learn something relatively well, but those who have innate ability can learn it faster, easier and take it farther. The rub there is that the people with gobs of talent often learn that they can coast on talent alone, and the people with less talent often turn into hard workers, because they have to be to succeed. See Vince Young vs. Case Keenum.

Again, I'm not saying your wrong for holding this team to a higher standard of guts, toughness, clutch or whatever you want to call it. But defining an intentionally vague term and inferring that others are ignorant for not agreeing with you is a little unfair.

If you survived being bullied I'd say your pretty tough, so I would say our definition is the same. He could have killed himself but he didn't. Could have been good parenting. Or learning from people you have grown up with it or things you saw it doesn't just come from specialized training. The terms are used widely in the same manner, you must be new at life. You can also be strong and some areas and not so much in others.

I never said I disagreed with your definition. I just said it was unfair for you to expect everyone to instantly agree with it (or that it was that strictly defined). I was in the military. I've taught varies school levels. I've played semi pro sports. I've performed in front of 20,000 people. I get where you're coming from. But admit it, that and all the other terms I was poking fun at are thrown around as cliches as a dodge more often than not.

As an aside, I've known guys that were hard as nails, mentally tough, but awful leaders and had very little initiative. Based on a quick google search, leadership, intuition and perseverance are all qualities of mental toughness. So it's not as cut and dry as it sounds, literally.

Although at this point I think we're arguing for the sake of arguing, which is fun too .

I don't think anyone is saying being mentally tough makes you perfect or always means that you win or the perfect leader. It's a pretty simple term, yes it's used in sports but also in Psychology. But, maybe your telling on yourself a bit by saying you are arguing for the sake of arguing, seems like you agree with me a bit, lol. Anyway Happy New Year!

Possibly, it's been awful slow today at work. I'm guilty of playing devil's advocate more often that I like to admit. Maybe I'm just subconsciously trolling out of boredom

    Happy New Year!

No one on this team is soft.

The only thing soft is found between your legs.

this team is shallow as pond water. The only one with heart is Parsons. We need a bench in the worst way. I don't care what you say, Lee and Bass would have been better than an "injured" Asik and Garcia whiffing on 4 threes a night. This team is miserable to watch lately.
