When Rick Adelman achieved the 22 game winning streak, there was no 3 games in 4 nights excuse or the team was playing on a back to back. The team looked the same running the same system, the same read and react offense that is unpredictable as the offensive players read how the defense reacts and adjusts accordingly. It is a single play with so many outcomes and possibilities. Good Defense is about anticipation and Good Offense is about deception.
That YouTube video has nothing to do with the Rockets. They don't run the same offense as what is being shown in that video.
I think the Celtics fraternity thought they could package an incompetent and shady character like Kevin Mchale who conned the Timberwolves franchise as a general manager and coach. They thought it would be easy to plagiarize, copy Adelman's read and react offense but find it out its more difficult to implement but they can still package the incompetent stooge because the team will continue to win based on players' talent alone. I would explain here how Adelman's system works but Mchale's people might learn from it and improve their pirated version of Adelman's offense.
Adelman only had Chuck Hayes, an Old Dikembe, and Yao was in and out of the lineup by then. Kevin Mchale has DWIGHT HOWARD for crying out loud.
Just going to the last page and reading this comment, you seem to be perceptive about this issue. In the basketball context what exactly is a play? In football and baseball a play is a planned sequence of events, carried out, and then there is a reset. Another play is then called. Each teams formations vary little. There may be minor adjustments such as a safety showing blitz, and the offense react in varying minor ways, but at the snap everyone has a particular assignment both offensively and defensively. Basketball is much more free flowing and chaotic than football. Basketball would be much more like football if teams ran full court presses. Then you would have an in bounds pass, analogous to a football snap, and a defined shot clock. But they generally do not. Even with a full court press there is no point in time where the other team can predict the position of every player in the field of play. Early on this forced basketball to adapt to the other teams player positions continually. Basketball strategically became more akin to soccer than football. Initial offensive points of attack can be determined, but if the defense chooses to thwart that point of attack by flexing and double or triple teaming, the point of attack must shift swiftly. Basketball offenses and defenses responded by teaching players a system rather than plays. Players must be acute enough to understand where the opponents players are positioned and react accordingly. Players who cannot do this generally wash out early in the NBA. There have been many read and react systems employed in basketball. The triangle, DDMO, the Princeton offense, motion etc. These all became known as the R&R offense. So while there may appear to be set plays, it may be perhaps just system patterns repeating themselves because the defense is not adjusting to a successful offensive pattern. Of course time outs can be a different animal, but there are so few in each game that matter I have decided to discuss them elsewhere.
Just watch the video on Adelman's corner offense. That's how read and react offense works. You rarely saw isolation plays in that historic 22 game winning streak. The good thing about it is that it works in the playoffs, despite the fronting which neutralized Yao , the rockets were still able to advance in the second round. Lets just say that a good coach like Adelman can make players (like Chuck Hayes) look good. Good players are the ones making Mchale look good.
Pff plays? All you need is to *McHale voice* get a stop and go! Stop and go stop and go, stop and go!
You are confusing a once in a lifetime winning streak with Adelman's coaching history. The offense must adapt to the rosters strengths. There currently is no player that played for Adelman on the roster. In addition Adelman's current team will probably not make the playoffs this season. Despite having by far and away the best PF in the league, a scoring machine in KM, an assist and defensive giant at PG and a serviceable center. You seem to be just slightly out of kilter with reality at times.
The Spurs offense got them to the big dance last season. They were in the top 5-10 as well, very very efficient and effective. We might put up a lot of points but the Spurs are not to far behind.
Well go look at Coach Adelman's tenure in Portland and SacTown to get a larger view of what pacmania were implying.
They did want Coach RA to teach one of their assistants at that time his offense. But RA was like hell-to-the-no.
Looks exactly like the Rockets current offense. Except for the incredible shooting percentage. But then it is a highlight real, so that is to be expected. LOL.
McHale I think is learning this offense as well. I don't remember him running a read and react offense in Minny. RA on the other hand has been running this offense since day one. I was just telling you ole buddy just use one example ( 22 game winning streak) to back up his stance. If you wanted a larger sample size then check out RA's tenure in Portland and Sactown. His offense has always been a thing a beauty. That is why he is in the Hall of Fame.
Not a problem sir. The head coaching job in the NBA is evolving. Currently head coaches have assistants specializing in offense, defense, shooting , positions etc. In addition McHale has a head strategist in Morey. McHale's job is to be a "leader of men", a face of the franchise, etc. As long as Morey is the head coaches boss he will dictate strategy and systems. I think little of Adelman these days, and view that 22 game winning streak as an anomaly. But those are nits.
Yeah. HAHAHAAA. "Come on guys. hey guys! come on guys! hey guys! let's go" Money well spent. Who needs plays when you can run and shoot three's?? We are the only one's who can do that right? lol
I hope that works out but IMO Morey shouldn't be dictating how these coaches run their offense and defense. That is why I told you on another thread, old veteran coaches wouldn't buy into Morey's way of doing things. But hey we are in a different era correct.
This is why we need a real coach. This is well coached basketball at its best. Imagine harden, parsons and lin in this offense with howard underneath. No iso ball, beautiful. Morey needs to move Mchale to a nice executive job asap and get a real coach. This is the difference between us and portland imo.
I agree with everything but your coach Adelman assement. Coach Adelman is the best coach not named Phil Jackson or Greg Popovich. No other coach in NBA in history could do that with the roster we had that year
