Do you think the Houston Chronicle is a good big city newspaper? How does it compare to the newspapers of other large cities? Overall, what do you think of Houston's news media (print, television, radio, internet)?
It's horrible. Ever since the Post dissolved and the Chron became the only paper in town it's done nothing but gone down hill imo. I'd rather read the Houston Press, Culture Map, hell even Paper City over their garbage.
The Chronicle is justifiably called the local rag. Journalism in Houston is dead. The writers put so much attention into e-articles that end up being illogical, unreadable, false, slanderous, unnecessary, type-ridden, etc. Also... How does one unsubscribe from receiving phone calls and mailers from this paper? I've given up and blocked the number.
The Chronicle is a hot pile of fly-blown, freshly-squeez'd, dogowner-didn't-bring-a-plastic-baggie-to-pick-it-up, sitting-on-the-lawn-in-the-middle-of-July crap. I know a large swath of the city's population either does not read (and many don't read English) or, if they do read, they stick to the Bible and dog-eared Tom Clancy novels. And hell, you can catch most of the newspaper online anyway. But the Chronicle is adequate at best. As a large city newspaper, it's almost an embarassment. Can't even afford their own movie reviewer. They print some SF Chronicle's syndicated reviews. And I thought the ex-Chronicle reviewer was bad. I wasn't a fan of the Post, but at least it provided competition, a reason for the Chronicle to look over its shoulder and up its game.
I've read the Chronicle almost religiously for 30 years now. It's been steaming pile ever since the Post went out of business and it's much worse now. They just recycle articles from AP or Reuters and they don't even make sense anymore. They don't even bother with the most basic of editing as grammar and spelling mistakes are rife.
Once in a while they have good investigations, but otherwise it's mostly recycled AP stores. The only reason to subscribe is to keep up with local news.

Unfortunately this has been the case for most local newspapers across the United States. They're dying a very slow death that has been brought on by the emergence of the Internet. In the US, there is really only a handful for city newspapers that are worth reading - NYT, Washington Post, LA Times...etc. The rest are just garbage and the layoffs are massive. If you want quality news, go online. If you want to support the local newspapers, subscribe.
NYT is thebest domestic paper IMO. Internationally BBC and Al Jazeera are very good. I'm shocked we don't have anything on the level of CBC here, but I guess government doesn't have money to report news or do a lot of things these days.
BBC and Al Jazeera are not newspapers. NYT is also not a typical city newspaper ...they have a vast global presence and covers mainly international news although they do have a local "US edition"
I don't think their print edition is terrible (except for their new trend of continuing A-1 stories in the second section on Sundays). Their website is trash.
When I read it, it doesn't feel like it's local reporting. There are local stories, yes, but it doesn't seem like it's in-depth, on-the-ground reporting. It's like everything is done over the phone and through emails with various copied and pasted press releases sprinkled around. If this is just an example of a national decline of the industry, I guess we just wait for it to die. But I wish someone could buy it and turn it around. Figure out a new model. Houston is one of the biggest, most diverse cities in America with a huge economic footprint, nationally and globally. It should have a more dedicated, locally invested press.
By far my favorite is Flipboard. It's not just for news. It's for articles, social media, and anything else you want to read. It's great app to use to read on both your phone or tablet.
