LOL at the people saying the Browns HC job is better than the Texans HC. I can't think of one reason it's better.

Not that its better... but that I could see O'Brien choosing them simply due to the Lombardi relationship.

We already know the Browns wanted him last year but couldn't get him due to the buyout.

the only argument I hear for it being better is that O'Brien has a relationship with the Browns GM. That seems like a pretty weak argument since none of us know the extent of the relationship and presumably money and team potential would weigh more heavily.

Side note; It always amazes me that broke ass cities like Detroit and Cleveland can find people to buy tickets to fill their stadiums/arenas.

Assistants can interview during the playoffs. Wade Phillips interviewed for the Tampa job before our playoff game in Baltimore a few years ago.

Most new HC hires are made by mid January. If assistants weren't allowed to interview until their season was over, then assistants on teams that consistently go deep in the playoffs would never get jobs.

EXACTLY!!!, NFL is Not For Long and in Cleveland that is definitely the case. In Houston, forget it. You'll get 10+ years if you can win in one of the weakest divisions in the NFL.

in a vacuum the Texans job seems much better, but the firing of Chud after one year and O'Brien's relationship with Belechik/Lombardi is concerning

What is the Lombardi relationship? I've never heard of it. They never worked together and I couldn't find anything through a Google search. I guess Lombardi worked with Belichick in Cleveland and O'Brien worked with Belichick in New England, but does it go further than that?

Lombardi is a Belicheck disciple... so is O'Brien.

Their paths have crossed on more than one occasion, and that network (including guys like Ozzie Newsome and the great Parcells) is very tight.

That sounds pretty flimsy to me. Two guys worked with the same coach 10 years apart so they must have a "good relationship" and one must hold enough influence to pull the other into a particular coaching job.

If relationships matter then alert the press, Wisenhunt will be the next HC because he and Smith were buddies on the competition committee.

    Same thing I was thinking.

The Browns hired Chud a week before Lombardi.

Why the heck would you hire your coach before your GM?

Seems like they set themselves up for a wasted year if Lombardi never wanted Chud.

They also directly worked together in Cleveland in 1993 and 1994.

That entire Cleveland staff/front office is famous for the amount of pro/college coaches and NFL GM's it has produced. The "football life" special highlights how all these guys got their starts in Cleveland (as did O'Brien).

Its more than just working under the same coach.

Did he insult you or something? Lance has been doing sports radio in this town for a long time and he's got contacts around the league.

Do you even believe half the stuff you type? Damn near every one of your posts is nothing more than you playing devils advocate. I'm convinced you like nothing more than being a contrarian.

I mean really.... You think Cleveland is so much more "championship starved" than Houston that the thought of being the "king of Cleveland" somehow tilts the scale in the browns favor? Really?? Literally one of the dumbest things I've ever heard.

No, they didn't. O'Brien coached at Brown University, his alma mater, in 1993 and 1994. He has no direct connection to Lombardi at all.
