Beautiful play... I just hope he can do the "routine" just as well. More often than not, excelling at the "routine" is what ends up getting teams to the playoffs/super bowl (rather than having the ability to do the "spectacular"... which is an added bonus, but nullified if the "simple" things aren't executed).
I don't know much about Bridgewater but I'll be happy with him #1 overall. I'd rather take a qb #1 and take the risk than wait and take someone 2nd.
Yes, let's draft woManziel and his male cheerleader boyfriend from eATMe. Maybe Fatty Fat Randy can slip him one of the 4 sandwiches he eats for lunch. Jajajajajajajajajaja I can be a 12-year old troll, too jajajajajjaajajajab (Your shtick is as old as a Schaub INT.)
It seems that doing the "routine" is why so many underrate Bridgewater. He manages the game well, makes great decisions, and gets the ball to his playmakers. He moves in the pocket well and is a pocket passer. Yes, he does the routine play. He made a few escapes and great plays during the bowl game, but most of the time he looked like a smart, patient, QB. That gif was likely just for the doubters who claim he can't make the spectacular play or who question his arm and mobility.
I don't think anybody should doubt his abilities when the play breaks down, or is under pressure... but being able to select and complete passes when you have time, and hit the open man when he's open, is what keeps immobile aging QB's in the league as long as they are. Having a QB that can do both is the jackpot. I just saw some passes overthrown yesterday (guys who were open), and some deep balls that were very off (didn't give the receiver a chance). Not saying that's who he is, and that he's incapable of doing the "routine"... just saying that its more important for his longevity that he eventually does.
His deep ball was the only thing I saw about him that I didn't like yesterday. As far as the "routine" goes, he consistently hit open receivers. He consistently threw receivers open (one of the things he does very well). He also threw the ball into tight windows and displayed patience. He does the "routine" very well - including all of the above, as well as reading the defense and changing things up accordingly, if need be.
I can definitely see O'Brien coming in and saying i need this, this and this, trading down and getting talent across the board. Sorry Bridgewater groupies.
The Texans may be better served trading down, getting more pics and getting a 1st round pick in the 2015 draft as well (and if that pick turns out to be the overall #1 pick _ Hello Famous Jameis). This gives them an opportunity to fill alot of holes through the draft and cut some players they shouldn't be paying while fixing the cap situation and making room to pay J.J. Quarterback may be the priority but it doesn't necessarily mean Bridgewater is the priority. Come senior bowl and combine time when they get a good close look at these quarterbacks _ it wouldn't surprise me at all if the Texans trade down because Bridgewater may not be the best in the group. And they may have to bring in a veteran quarterback regardless because Schaub and Case may not even be on the roster. And if they grab someone like Josh McCown for cheap _ he'll probably beat out whatever rookie they draft anyway and be the starter so they may as well trade down, get more picks and they can still draft a quarterback.
The intel that others have posted about obrien says that he wants to adapt his offense to exploit defenses. That requires a cerebral quarterback who understands defenses. Bridge water is most likely to fit that bill, unless obrien thinks he can coach up one of the other candidates. Bridge water gives you the best chance of success in the near term without settling for someone who does not have an upside.
Who knows. O'Brien, or whoever the coach ends up being, might be so confident in his ability to develop QB talent that he decides he would rather draft other positions early and roll with a raw QB outside the 1st round.
He didn't see great defenses in the AAC and complex NFL blitz packages. I'm not sold on his intelligence -- I'd like to see more analysis done. He struggled mightily vs. UH, who has an ex-NFL guy as their defensive coordinator.
