I don't think you can officially hire a coach until the regular season is over. No Monday Night Football in the last week so Eagles-Cowboys on Sunday night is the last game of the season. Hopefully we have an announcement and press conference on Monday.

What's troll about realism and negotiations?

You're way too optimistic about this club Donny, always have been.

Can you name me a singular instance where a coach has been reportedly negotiating a contract and not ended up with the job?

This isn't like player free agency. There is no salary cap involved. It's not a "get what you can while you can" free-for-all. The money is almost always fully guaranteed. Unless the Texans can't afford it (extremely unlikely), O'Brien is coming here. Coaches don't get to the salary negotiation phase unless they're packing their bags. Coaches spend decades in the NFL and can't afford to burn bridges or negotiate in bad faith.

What you said isn't realism, it's irrational negativity with zero precedence to back it up other than a football team losing games.

He got forced out. He thought he was staying. And even if he didn't get forced out, what coaches who are retiring lie to tell their recruits they aren't retiring?? Idiotic analogy. But then again, pretty much every post you make is idiotic or angry and offensive in some way.

What is the McNair type of guy? We've only had 2 head coaches so I don't know how you can pigeon hole his type.

Think this was already posted in this thread. Like I said, college coaches in that situation never say anything otherwise, even when they know they're leaving (Tommy Tuberville, for example, was having dinner with a Tech recruit while his agent was inking a deal with Cincinnati, etc). They have to CYOA until the ink is dry. To do anything otherwise would be a detriment to their own interest (in case their exit plan doesn't work out) and the interest of their current employer (which could lead to burned bridges).

What do you think he would tell a recruit at this point if he's still negotiating with the Texans?

Texans HC job is the cushiest job in the nfl. No other job has this much job security. If Obrien is hired he can bank on at least 5 years no matter what he does.

    Exactly.

"Well Thomas, I'm currently negotiating with the Texans and probably going to leave. But promise me you won't tell anyone, ok? That would totally piss my employer off, alienate a bunch of recruits, and possibly cost me lots of money. But you're 17 years old and totally trustworthy, right? By the way, please don't de-commit."

If we're already negotiating and it takes 5 weeks to finish the deal, something's gone wrong.

8 new coaches were hired last year. The earliest (Andy Reid) was on January 4, 5 days after the end of the season. The last (Bruce Arians) was hired on January 18.
