I know very little about football, but the coaching tree thing wouldn't worry me at all. If a guy can coach, he can coach. Period.

Look no further than the Popovich coaching tree. Pop is the best coach in the NBA, bar none. Arguably the best of all time.
And yet, up to this year pretty much all the coaches who came from the Popovich coaching tree were all pretty meh. Mike Brown, Jacque Vaughn, Monty Williams, Alvin Grenty... the list goes on.
Long-time Pop AC Mike Budenholzer on the other hand has done some really nice things this year in Atlanta. The same is could be said about Brett Brown, though he's a bit harder to evaluate, because of the Sixers' lack of talent and their desire to lose. Still, both of these guys look like they'll be above average coaches at worst.

Judge the individual. Coaching tree doesn't mean sqaut.

A definite thumbs up for Bill O'Brien.

    Undecided, but hopeful, on Bridgewater.

I'll sign on with O'Brien and Bridgewater.

That's change we can believe in.

Report: Houston Texans, Penn State head coach Bill O’Brien closer to agreement

The talk of the week as far as the NFL head coaching carousel is concerned has been the rumors that Penn State Nittany Lions head coach Bill O’Brien has some vast interest in taking over the vacant slot for the Houston Texans. Reportedly, the interest was mutual as well.

Now, according to ESPN’s Chris Mortensen, things may be heating up even that much more, as the two are reportedly inching closer and closer to a deal:

Bill O'Brien & Texans intensify talks they hope will make him next coach in Houston, per sources. ESPN link soon from myself & @AdamSchefter

O’Brien would be taking over for Gary Kubiak, who was fired from Houston just a few weeks ago as the team has struggled through a disappointing 2013 campaign, after there were Super Bowl expectations before the season.

After what O’Brien has done at Penn State, you could certainly see why the Texans would want the former New England Patriots offensive coordinator to head up their attempt at a turnaround.

The coach took over Penn State right before they were hit with harsh sanctions stemming from the Jerry Sandusky scandal, yet was able to keep the team relevant on the field and on the recruiting trail.

To be able to expand the candidate pool, and look at more guys. Why not??? Are we going to lose him if we wait?

Very good chance the Texans lose him if they wait because other teams are interested for the same reasons the they are.

Texans have the advantage because Kubiak was fired and they could start the interview process before the season ended.

Exactly, there could be as many as 8 HC openings come Monday. This needs to be done ASAP and O'Brien seems to be the guy.

    Yes...

This is free agency. If you let that guy walk out the doors of your building without a contract signed, you likely won't see him again. If he's your man, sign him.

Yup we fired Gary early so we would have the advantage of first choice, but you have to pull the trigger to take advantage of it.

I've never heard the man speak, I hope he had the commanding presence the team needs to recover from this disaster.

I think O'Brien would be a good hire. He demands toughness and accountability.

Not sure why so many are sold on Obrien. All he did was keep afloat an already good program. Nice job, far from spectacular.
