Marc Stein trying to push an Asik/Lin for Gasol trade.

The issue is (I don't think) Houston wants Gasol at this point. He's not the guy they envision as the replacement for Asik. He and Dwight don't mesh well together. They need a stretch four. You would have to find a third team to find assets Houston wants. It's only December 24.

    What does Houston want?

They have multi-layer wish list: They would love at least one future first round pick. Either get one for yourself or one you can put in a future trade. The Asik thing is a huge distraction and has hung over them since the day Dwight got there. They now have to figure out to get him re-integrated, contributing, and playing again and he doesn't want to be there. It's a mess for the Rockets but no team has made more trades than the Rockets. There are 29 former Rockets on other teams throughout the league. There is a deal to be constructed. If I'm the Lakers, that move really intrigues me.

Nup. Don't like any of the Boston trade scenarios so far, especially not bringing Varejao here.

Looks like Milsap is a pipe dream.

I would settle for Thadeus Young straight up at this stage.

I don't know a lot about Jeff Green.... How is his perimeter defense?

Excellent analysis. I'm starting to respect Marc Stein more and more.

Lakers would definitely be interested in Asik+Lin for Gasol. Even if Rox don't want Gasol, there must be a 3rd team that is interested in his expiring contract... Sixers? Atlanta?

We could possibly get Young, Milsap and some role players this way.

again, Houston does NOT need a stretch 4. they've been playing with stretch 4's. they need another post presence especially when Dwight goes out.

Don't see that personally. Pau's value is as cap relief. Perhaps the Knicks or Nets would take him if they're still drowning at the deadline.

Perhaps.........perhaps........if nothing else develops with Asik and Lin at the deadline we could possibly be interested in Pau to play out the season, either to allow us to participate in 2014 free agency OR if Pau would re-sign to a paltry extension that would make him easily tradeable (highly unlikely).

Not to mention the Lakers would not want both Asik and Lin on their books without Nash being gone. They want max contract space available. To take both Lin and Asik and still be able to do that they're gonna have to get Nash to retire (a possibility).

I'm sure Morey wants to be a player in 2014 free agency but I would think he values Asik and Lin more than just expiring contracts. Morey wants expiring contracts and some combination of good players on rookie deals and first round draft picks OR a superstar player and expiring contract(s) for Asik and Lin at the deadline.

Ideally they get someone who can fill both of those roles. But I don't know if you've been paying attention, but the Rockets have been playing best with Terrence Jones operating as a stretch 4 or even when Omri Casspi is in at 4. Sure, they'd gladly take a guy like Aldridge or even Milsap, but neither of those guys appear to be available. Pau Gasol has already proven he doesn't work beside Dwight and that sure is a costly back up. That said, if they could get Pau + a pick I'd be all for that considering Pau is expiring. I just don't see it happening.

But I'm curious - who is the available post presence you have in mind?

Pau Gasol's cap relief would be a thrill for a lot of teams, actually.

For example, Toronto and Philadelphia both want to clean house.

Is Stein completely pulling the Lakers thing out of his bunda, or is there anything to suggest the Lakers want to tie up their cap with Lin and Asik?

I could only see it if Kevin Love told the Lakers to keep some money open for me in 2015. But for all we know, he told that very thing to buddy James Harden to pass along to Morey.

Which I'm not counting on, because as much as everyone here talks about the Summer of Love (2015), this team needs to compete now. Howard's tearing it up, proving all the haters wrong.

^^^ Stein and Ramona Shelburne were clear to say that this was just Stein making up a fake trade that he thinks make some sense for the Lakers (the conversation took place on LA radio).

Stein's reasoning is that Lakers are unlikely to get a big 2014 free agent that would help anyway, so they might as well get salaries expiring in 2015 (along with Nash's) and try to use cap room in 2015 instead.

Shelburne asked, "Wouldn't the Lakers disappoint fans who were looking forward to 2014 FA shopping spree and ended up with Omer Asik?" Stein says that history shows us that there is nothing more important to winning than rim protection and Omer Asik is absolutely elite in this area. Shelburne replied, "Isn't Chris Kaman a rim protector that Lakers have already?" and Stein said "Kaman is not even close to Omer, who is elite" and added that Jeremy Lin has been successful with D'Antoni and would be very popular especially given the Lakers' already high profile.

Stein and Shelburne later interviewed Brian Windhorst and asked about the Heat possibly breaking up (and Lebron coming to the Lakers). Windhorst says that Pat Riley has a big challenge this summer give the tax structure and owner Mickey Arison's reluctance to pay tax (and in particular the repeater tax).

    -----------

Personally, I wouldn't mind getting Pau back for Lin and Asik, maybe add one of the small expiring contract Lakers, too, like Xavier Henry, Jodie Meeks, Jordan Farmar or Wes Johnson, for depth.

If Morey is confident that Houston can land one of the likes of Bosh or (dare I dream) Lebron, 2014 cap room could be worth a lot to the team.

You make a run with the Dwight-Pau-Harden group for one season and see what happens in the summer.

It does make a weird sort of sense for the Lakers; but it would be too good for our own team, because Pau's gigantic expiring could take us to many third teams (I wouldn't see us keeping him).

Not that I'd want to help the Lakers land Kevin Love, native of Santa Monica, in 2015.
