If you're so concerned about him not getting credit, why don't you give it to him. Pretty simple thing to do. I think we can do better, again he is a great guy it seems but we should not have let Rick go and I'm wishing we had Karl right about now. This a business and whatever is best for the team is what should happen. I would move Mchale to the FO and get Karl in the off season iso's and pick and rolls will only get you so far.
Some of y'all dawg Mchale way too much. He's a top 10 coach. Spurs fans complain about Pop, so enough said.
Look at the quality of shots we get out of timeouts and compare that to the quality of shots the Spurs got after timeouts. That's largely coaching, right?
McHale is not a good coach, his attention to detail is lacking - he is a coach that players like to play for, but overall - I don't believe he will ever be a good coach, one that is capable of winning anything. Witness the adjustments that Rick Carlisle made against the Rox, and the lack of any adjustments from our side. I would love to be wrong here, but I just don't see Mchale as being even an average coach. DD
One way or another we will see in the playoffs this season. His contract is up then. My guess is we need to make it to the WCF for it to be extended. Anything less and he should go.
If we are to believe Morey, he mentioned that getting to the second round is our goal, anything beyond that is bonus. It's us fans that place unrealistic expectations from the 4th youngest team in the league and has only been playing together less than a year and very little playoff experience.
We almost got to the second round last season. With the players we have, I expect more. Morey is ofcourse downplaying expectations. I'm not surprised. OKC have their big two of Durant and Westbrook and they expect to be in the finals. Our bench is weak but I'm sure there will be trades to address that by the deadline.
Why is this such an underrated thing? It's one of the best qualities of a coach. Players know how to run plays, they arent idiots. They've been playing ball their whole life. Inspiration and mentorship are important. Especially for a young team. If the players like McHale, that's all that really matters right now. I really don't think you just plug in a Hubie Brown tomorrow and expect some type of explosion or epiphany.
I don't know if your comparisons are fair. OKC trio (Ibaka) has been playing together for years, have tons of playoff experience and are being coached by the same person for 6 years. The team we have now is completely different than the last year too. You can say that Morey is downplaying but without any evidence, that is just conjecture. There are wishes and there are goals. Is it possible that you are mixing the 2? I personally would call it a success to reach the second round but next year would be different. Calling for the head of the coach for not reaching the WCF to me, is a bit unrealistic. As the saying goes, Rome wasn't built in a day.
Fair enough. For me it's not really how far we get but why we don't get further? It'll be apparent in the playoffs if Mchale is getting out coached (as it looks like he has often been this season). You are right, you need stability to win. But having the coach be there is part of that. If McHale looks like he can't take us all the way then the sooner we cut him lose the better.
Carlisle's great coaching was taking advantage of a Rockets team that had 5 healthy rotational players (Lin should not have been playing, but was needed), Brewer, and Brooks. I guess McHale could have put Motiejunas, a foul prone player, in to guard Nowitzki, a guy who draws fouls. With shortage of wings, Parsons could not play many minutes on Dirk. Canaan was the only other guy on bench capable of playing. I don't think McHale is the greatest coach, but he is much better than I thought he was and definitely above average. Houston is going to have defensive problems with Portland and Dallas from a personnel stand point.
Another nice effort by coach. Back to back wins vs. Spurs and then a rested Memphis team. Coach fought through fatigue to deliver in the 4th for us. He wisely kept DMo on the bench even during garbage time in SA to keep him ready and motivated for Memphis. A truly smart move. Really good job literally lighting a fire under Jeremy Lin's ass, too, when he was playing badly and Jeremy delivered.
His most brilliant move yet. Can't wait for him to break out Brewer in game 7 of the finals for total domination. McHales foresight is so good it's frightening.
Why pay a coach at all according to this logic? The Lakers of the late 90's were extremely talented but coached by a doof name Dale Harris, swept by Utah in the playoff for years. Plug in Phil Jackson and they win the championship the next 3 years. Yeah coaching is just important at all.
Actually not. That is about experienced savvy players. Anything that gets drawn up is probably going to be blown up by NBA defenses. Most of the time what actually happens is the second or third option.
