I don't know what cats you've been around, but I can safely say my cats aren't like that at all. The only time I've been scratched by my cat is when we are playing, the rest of the time he's really chill and sits with me to watch tv. I'll deal with the scratches vs the constant neediness of a thing that barks and craps all over.
Well obviously I have been around cats that scratch and plot to kill you. I think most people have. Just because your cats aren't like that, don't pretend all cats aren't. Dogs can be trained to crap outside and not bark. Cats jump on everything (including people) and when they cry sound like babies.
Cats suck compared to dogs, just my opinion. Some are cool but most seem to be giant a holes. Your going to piss and sheit in my house and show me no affection or love, screw that. I can tolerate 1 outdoor cat maybe.
I will agree dogs are more trainable, but the reality is most dogs are not properly train. Dogs are fine outside, but inside, they are a mess. They crap, piss and throw up everywhere. They bark all the time, they always stink, always drooling and jumping all over you. Not to mention their noxious gas. Cats? They go in a litter box. You can leave them alone for a week and they will be fine.
Well this one represents the worst of both worlds in that argument- all the untrainable weirdness of a typical cat and then some, yet with the constant in your face attention seeking behaviors of a dog. Also, it barks.
Just some animal shelter info Black cats have a very difficult time getting adopted. Black dogs too even, but especially black cats. Older kittens & cats have a harder time getting adopted If you bring in a stray cat, they'll ask if you've been feeding it and for how long. If it's 2 weeks or over, they'll count it as owner surrender and can put the cat to sleep at that minute. They will if it isn't very adoptable or the shelter is full. Stay animals are only guaranteed 3 days so that their possible owner can claim them. Really, most cats don't belong in shelters. Unless a cat looks like it is in serious medical condition, far too young to fend for itself, or a clearly indoor only cat can't take care of itself outside and you've already looked for its owner, don't bring it to a shelter. Feral cats especially do not belong in shelters. That's a death sentence.
Not in the country. They don't belong there, and are hell on birds and small mammals. I prefer shoot-shovel-shutup programs.
Cats that can't reproduce still occupy territory and keep fertile cats, and their dozens of kittens, out of that area. I am a big fan of SS&S, but not the best way to go here. Plus you forgot the last S dummy. Spoiler

Update... This cat still kind of has problems, mentally, but seems much better adjusted now that it's had a buddy for a while, who is pretty much a normal cat by comparison. This black guy still won't come out when company is over, is very particular how you touch him etc. they do seem to love each other though. Spoiler Woke up to this sorcery yesterday morning. A flashlight eye effect for some reason... he actually has copper eyes, and she has blue eyes, but some hexagon camera trick made it seem opposite. Hate my turtle, hate(d) my dog, but love these two.
Dogs are much smarter than cats. As in there's no debate arguing over this. It's a fact. Not all dogs are needy. Not all cats are independent. Deal with both constantly. Love both animals.
My wife and I rescued a kitten living under a school early last year. She was pretty healthy and, while we were staying at my parents' house for a while, we had to keep her in the room with our kids. So, as a kitten, she was exposed to rowdiness and loudness and people (the kids) wanting to grab, hug and play with her. You can do almost anything to her these days and she could care less and she's not afraid of a thing. Late the same year, we rescued a litter of four other kittens at the same spot. These four were in worse shape with all having some degree of mange. We kept them in our bathroom to monitor and get them back to full health as well as to not throw them all together with our first cat. Cats are VERY territorial there are issues a lot of times bringing in new felines to share their life and home with. Watch the show Cats from Hell and you'll see what I'm talking about. LOL!! But anyway, these four kittens were not exposed to people and sounds, etc because there were isolated. They are ferrel cats. Now, even though we spend time with them, it's been a year, and try and pet them often, all four act really skiddish a lot of times. Heck, one of them will run away every time you try and pet her but if you're sitting on the sofa she will come to you and be VERY loving. In high school I found some kittens and found good homes for them but kept one. A black one just like yours. That was one weird cat. By the way, I'm not some crazy person. I like dogs MUCH better. Cats just seem to find me. LOL! Cats are weird animals but, the way they act towards people, etc is usually a result of what they were exposed to as kittens. Glad you took this cat in and it has a good home.
Good job on keeping it and giving it a loving home. Cats are definitely weird. I grew up with them and had a few with one of my ex gf's. They are all unique, some are social, some arent, some come out and play, some hide when strangers (to them) come over. My gf now has 2 cats that are both males and were best buds until one day we went to her house and they had fought over night and almost killed each other. There was hair all over the place and one got messed up pretty bad. Now they have to be separated.

Congratulations on your new cat! Cat ownership is full of nuanced personal rewards i think you'll find both challenging and exciting.
One of my buddies had one when we were younger. It always stunk and was a pain to upkeep. Plus they are so boring.
