Those of you defending flops must be some really boring people. 90's NBA was so much better. There was a block or a dunk every 5 or 6 possessions. That's basketball. lol, what a tool. I would have posted him up and elbowed him in the face if he pulled some weak stunt like that on me.
You are avoiding the fact the purpose of taking a charge is not to stop the defender but to get a whistle from the ref. If you do hold your position to actually stop the attacker, I am all for that. If you rush to the position at the last millisecond so the attacker cannot avoid the contact, do not contest shot, but fall down nicely in front of the ref, to me it is disgusting. <object width="560" height="315"><param name="movie" value="//www.youtube.com/v/C-ZQnPo3H2s?hl=en_GB&version=3"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="//www.youtube.com/v/C-ZQnPo3H2s?hl=en_GB&version=3" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="560" height="315" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true"></embed></object>
Ginobili could have attempted to contest the shot, but chose to hold his crotch and then fall down. He was the one that created that contact, Melo could not have avoided it. I am not arguing whether it is legal or not, a lot of bad things in this world are legal. Lebron might actually become the greatest ever if he had not flopped that much.
Last time I took a charge I got a concussion. Always tuck if you're getting hit hard by a bigger guy. Also probably don't take charges in intramurals, NOT worth it (I wasn't hunting a charge, I just beat him to the spot, he was out of control and there was no other defensive play to make). Anyways, yeah, it's gone too far in today's league, but it has some merit in itself. Personally I prefer the "hands in the air" charge where you get to position, contest, and take the hit as an incidental, but that's not on the NBA refs' checklist to call so you never see it.
Did you even watch the video? How could the dude "hold his crotch" when he raised both his hands? SMH, Ginobili is one of the biggest floppers and he wasn't flopping in that play. What do you mean by "could not have avoided it"? If you go full speed into the lane, you take the chance of someone stepping in front of you. It's a fair game. Why disadvantage the defensive player by giving the offensive player space BEFORE he gets there? That's essentially what you are trying to say. You think that's fair?
There used to be a lot less charges before the rule changes. Now, I think NBA players draw charges out of necessity. What else are you doing to do? Pretty much ANY contact, especially against star players, results in a foul on the defense. When I watch in slow motion all the fouls that players like Harden, Durant, Wade draws, I pretty much feel half of them should not be fouls. I believe it was either JVG or SVG who proposed banning charges due to its unsafe nature, but allow hand checks and other defensive methods to make up for it. Basically, NBA defenders should not resort to taking the charge. The rules of the game should allow other forms of defense that are just as effective without involving huge collisions.
I don't know how you can do away charges without resulting in strong players bulling to the basket recklessly. Every rule change favors a certain style of play and a certain type of players. If you let the game be more physical, you are advantaging strength/size over finesse/quickness. At the end of the day, it's a matter of taste. There's no right or wrong. What officiating needs to do is consistency. Superstar calls are disgusting.
There were almost no charges called back when I first started watching the NBA in the early 90s. And it was fair to the defense because contact was allowed under the basket. When did Hakeem ever take a charge? He had no issues playing defense. I'm only speaking in terms of what I perceive to be safety. Taking a charge to me is too much like football. And I find it distasteful that the best way to play defense is to stand still while another person run over you. Anyway, every rule change in the NBA or any other sport is choosing one subjective option over another. I don't think I or anyone here tries to argue that any option is factually better than another. Heck, NFL players are getting their brains knocked out and many feel like that should just continue.
I think they should eliminate charges altogether for players in motion, contest the shot or get out of the way. I don't think standing still while other guys are moving should ever be legit defense. Having said that the NBA is far to liberal in rewarding players for just running into somebody an flailing.
You do realize you are describing situations where the offensive playing is merely "in motion" and not necessarily shooting. So why can't a defender stand his ground when the offensive player isn't even shooting yet Even the primary defender should just get out of the way when man goes "in motion" of course you are not saying that So your saying the secondary defender? Well what about zone defense who often has no designated defender? Should zone just part for LeBron ones he stasrts driving There is not one sport that requires the defender to get out of the way. Because it would ruin the defenses and be impossible to referee
nah it sucks but its part of the game. u gotta have something with the rules heavily favoring offense. they're polishing the charge rules. i hate seeing someeon take a charge when someone is up in the air for a layup. they need to do something about charges on passing the ball. that's a no call
