The Indian reaction is ridiculous. Totally overblown. I actually think it didn't help that the prosecutor was of Indian origin (Preet).

So that is standard procedure for anyone who is detained in a jail cell?

lol of course -- I had forgotten this guy was behind the Galleon mess. That was truly a black mark on Indians involved in US business -- or at least they took it that way. No wonder India is so pissed that this guy has bit them again.

Eh I'm skeptical. A lot of Indians treat hired help like trash. It's embarrassing when I go to India and see how servants and maids are treated. I've seen enough to know that there's a good chance of some level of coercion involved here.

That said, there's no reason to strip search her and I'm sure they couldve just gone to the ambassador and just negotiated something. (expulsion and some financial penalties plus backpay for the nanny) There are better ways of handling this. We get our diplomats out of all kinds of bs they commit abroad. There's no reason to act differently in this situation.

I've noticed Indians don't treat waitstaff in restaurants well either. Purely anecdotal, not sure if others have seen this

Well I don't work as a waiter so they haven't been demeaning to me personally. I've managed many Indians over the years at work and have had good luck with them. I have no problem with them. Except when it's time to go out to dinner and they're all vegetarian. And the whole BO thing, but that's easily fixable.

Visa and migrant worker fraud probably cuts a little close to grain for a diplomatic worker, though. You'd want to set a deterrent for something that could be duplicated across an entire subgroup.

If you see someone in those jail pajamas or whatever they are, someone watched them take their clothes off.

In most state and federal level prisons, criminals prior to being processed are thoroughly examined for the outside chance of smuggling contraband/weapons into the prison population. Prisoners at these facilities are known to smuggle cellphones, weapons, drugs etc. While there is zero chance that a person like this is carrying such weapons/contraband into a prison population, she is and should be treated like any person that is processed at these max security institutions. They have policies that apply to every potential inmate that is considered standard operations.

The entire situation was totally blown out of proportion in Indian news media outlets, and CNN reported this mess only several days later. Was there a right way of dealing with a diplomat that committed a crime on American soil? Perhaps she shouldve been immediately deported or methods of contact should've been established with the Indian Consulate here in the States. All of this still doesn't help the American public image on an international scale(ie. spying on allies, etc).

One very important point that I would like to make is that we should no longer expect the same courtesy of being American once you step off this soil onto foreign grounds. And always learn the customs of the land you decide to enter.

How refreshing to be able to say this without consequences:

The well-paid ho illegally underpaid someone, possibly mistreated them and then threw a fit at the airport just because she's a consular officer?

Glad they arrested her. In fact, I know many people from the region I live in do this routinely and I wish it was discovered more often when they go abroad.

Anyone else notice the misogynist undertone? Is it cultural or personal, or both?

How much does the "ho" earn? And what's the evidence of the employee being mistreated? Sorry, I'm not following the story. What I was told by someone who is following it is that she claims she paid a certain salary to the employee and paid the difference to the employee's family in India. Not sure how plausible that is, but supposing its true, does that change your view that she is a ho?
