Yea a common misconception is that when people say "Sugar" they don't realize that 60% of your diet is broken down into monosaccharides. The benefit of complex carbs is that they are broken down slowly and you don't get the insulin spike you do with say, ice cream and coke.

Watch King Corn (free on YouTube), it explains the history of High Fructose Corn Syrup, and how it reduced food prices dramatically in the US while also greatly increasing obesity across the country.

There is a litany of reason as to why obesity is an epidemic in this country. For instance, are you familiar with food deserts?

In 2011, Houston alone had 440,000 residents that lived in urban food deserts.

If we really want to tackle obesity in this counrty, we will really need to take a deep look at and address some of it's underlying causes.

High fructose corn syrup alone does not cause obesity. That plus poor dietary discipline.

The point is the same. High fructose corn syrup is not a good thing.

Moderation is key, though with somethings you don't need and probably should take very small amounts of. Things of this nature include concentrated sucrose, trans-fats, HFCS...

Not exactly ricin, but I wouldn't consume products containing these things on the regular.

Seriously, is it just me or does steak, brussels sprouts, and brown rice taste REALLY good together?

I used to think a calorie is a calorie but it's much more complex than that. It's processed by your body (liver) diff.

I am not talking about cutting carbs and fat. I am talking about the overconsumption of refined sugar found in sodas, candy, juices, desserts and all the extra sugar that's loaded into normal foods to keep us hooked.

Somehow people made high fructose corn syrup the scapegoat.

I dropped from 33 inch waist to 29 inch waist in 7 months this year by eliminating sugar and bread from my diet. Only lost about 5 over all pounds since I gained muscle from working out. Was able to finally get rid of the lower abdominal and flank fat that had plagued me for years. I love sugar, but it is the devil.

White refined sugar is not part of a balanced diet. White refined sugar is an addictive poison. Poison in moderation is still poison.

Fat is a part of a balanced diet. Bad fats are not a part of a balanced diet. We need fat. But we just need to avoid bad fats. We consume good fats all the time, and they are necessary to lose fat from our bodies.

There is no comparison with the white refined sugar or syrups that people consume 99% of the time. Even if you have a fantastic metabolism or work out like a maniac, there is no reason to have sugar. You might LIKE to have sugar, and that's fine - but it's a supreme waste of calories, which then makes you want to waste more calories on it each time. Meanwhile - even if you are in shape - you could be using those calories to consume important nutrients and are instead choosing some kind of sugar high because you think moderation in poison is good. It's not good. It may be harmless if you're able to control it, but there is no circumstance under which the moderate consumption of sugar can be considered "good".

This is all easier said than done. It's either expensive or time-consuming to live with a diet where you only consume sugar from fruits and vegetables. That's not extreme dieting, that's just normal dieting but we have become so accustomed to the damned substance that it feels extreme to us.

Also one more thing: calories in/calories out is idiotic. Sure you will burn calories by creating a deficit, even if you only consume sugar for your 1500 calories but you will be getting unhealthier than you were before such a diet. The goal is health AND fat loss. If you lost all the muscle in your body, you would be amazed how much your weight would decrease - but you would look and function very poorly.

It's not just taste. Sugar is a cheap way to add bulk to products.

This. This is what I was trying to say.

Sugar is in EVERYTHING we eat now. The food giants have used our genetic craving for salt, fat and food for their advantage. From BBQ sauce/ketchup to bread..to peanut butter.

If a kid eats a PBJ sandwich, he/she is getting sugar from the jelly, peanut butter and bread...don't forget to top it off with a glass of orange juice! :(

Would have to agree with this! I've done similar research on this as a grad student and I can't stress enough that anything that is "processed" is extremely bad for you. It's the ugly truth, we are not biologically designed to eat these types of food everyday.

It is important to get a balanced diet but 99% of people are not getting a balance diet, they're eating what I consider a drug. And this drug is everywhere in what we eat(basically anything that is processed). The best way to get a balance diet is to eat only meat, vegetables, and fruits. No bread of any kind( not that 100% whole wheat crap or 100% multigrain stuff, chances are they are not and are a bunch of lies, which advertising today is basically nothing but lies but ill leave that for another thread). Bread, rice, etc= sugar

Honestly..we are just eating food like substances "they" want us to eat. Sad part is..our bodies take a toll and we end up with all sort of diseases.

Will we ever know what would happen if everyone in the world ate a balanced, non processed diet?

The funny part is when we stop eating bagels and breads and other craziness, we just substitute it with more processed items like protein shakes, bars and other "fat free" items.

Yeah pretty much everything we eat is processed crap. Anything except fresh fruits and vegetables are so far from being real. It's tough as a college student, since it's like $3 for an apple or banana at the dining hall and buying ingredients to cook (even with a kitchen) costs a small fortune (we tried doing that, and after a month realized we would go completely broke).
