It's an interesting situation all around. You have a network that profits off a bunch of hillbillies and of course the hillbillies profit off of being that but then they get out of their lane, which is stupid entertainment, and they get political and then the hammer drops. I don't fault the network any more than the hillbillies. They're both profiting off of stupid. Then stupid gets political and yeah, you should stay in your lane stupid. Apparently they were too stupid to know any better which is why they were popular in the first place. It's even more interesting that the likes of Palin and Jindal take up the torch for the hillbillies. Pandering to hillbillyville and further alienating themselves as extremists on the political landscape. Instead of just disagreeing with the comments, now it's about freedom and the intolerance of hate speech on minorities. That's just funny stuff. The conservative philosophy of doubling down on stupid just continues to reap dividends. In the span of a week, a FOX News anchor claimed Jesus was white and the Duck Dynasty guy ripped gays and blacks. And you wonder why minorities don't vote Republican.
The title of his blog is Absolute Truths (and alpaca grooming tips) and despite scrolling through his illiterate rantings of persecution with hopes of the payoff, no alpacas were to be found.
Every one of the "stupid" brothers on this show have Business Degrees and were multi-millionaires prior to the creation of Duck Dynasty. They were not born with a silver spoon as Phil mentioned he was a poor child growing up working in the cotton fields with the black folk. Are you jumping to conclusions on their intelligence and political views based on their exterior looks? That seems a bit like profiling to me and profiling is bad. GQ asked an openly religious man a question that they knew was going to get a religious answer and they went with it. Phil Robertson has never left West Monroe, LA and would give the same answers as any 60-80 year old white male from the south. If the same question was asked to Willie or Jace my guess is you would get a more PC answer because they are businessmen regardless of their personal beliefs behind closed doors.
hey which scripture of the Bible that he was quoting does this come from again? they never covered that when I attend church on Sundays
Sorry CometsWin, reading your post was hard not to hear it in this voice: Not everyone who is rural, white and working class is a "hillbilly," especially when you consider that all the kids have university degrees and the business was a multi-million dollar success long before the show. I don't agree with Phil Robertson's views on religion or politics, but it's a stretch to dismiss his entire family as "stupid." It's not like the show is "Hey, Let's Laugh at the Red State Rural People." because it isn't, and it's done in good taste. Interesting? You say that as if it's somehow shocking to you, or that "pandering to hillbillville" couldn't be the title of a book about Bill Clinton. Haven't you heard? "Freedom of speech" is the new dog whistle. The non-country club eligible figured out that "states rights" isn't about highway funding. I don't think "doubling down on stupid" is a conservative philosophy as much as it is an opportunistic moment for politicians long past the expiration of their 15 minutes of fame and media personalities and pundits desperate for manufactured contraversy to use to exploit the simple-minded. While it's safe to say self-identified conservatives are winning the race, the tendency to dumb down the discourse and pander to the lowest segment of the populist base is simply politics as usual. See also: Dan Quayle, Murphy Brown. I think most of it is disingenuous and the temptation to do these things will always be a part of our anti-intellectual culture, because...it almost alawys works.
Jase was self-aware enough to actually describe the experience as "facial profiling" once on the show, when people treated them like hooligans because of the way they look. I appreciate the Robertsons for stealing long beards back from hipsters and making them safe to grow again. On one hand, I agree that I wouldn't expect someone to interview my own father (who is about his age) and say much different (and likely worse). On the other, from the writer's description, religion was the subject Phil kept coming back to and he indulged him. I don't think for a minute the piece was meant as a hatchet job or anything, and the outcome from it wasn't surprising. I suspect that their personal beliefs are more nuanced and more in line with others of their generation and aren't as rigid and puritancial, especially considering their candor. There is plenty of anecodatal evidence in the show and in interviews with them to support that. I don't see Phil who was "raised in the sixities" adopting a multi-racial child or as the former alcoholic who found Jesus buying a winery and selling his own vintage, as Willie did.
Ignoring racism because African Americans were singing songs in the cotton fields is not racism, but calling people hillbillies is racism. Hmm...
No, I've seen the show and they play up being hillbillies. It's why they're popular. I don't watch the show and don't care but it is bigoted and racist. Just own it, don't soft pedal it.
I found this post very offensive. If Christian beliefs are "archaic," then gay marriage is just a stupid fad. How does that make you feel?
So you are saying you are saying we should get rid of freedom of religion? Because that's what you are implying. As far as I'm concerned, if you don't support freedom, you can leave the United States and never come back. Take your sorry a$$ to North Korea.
If you are a member of the business world, you would understand a boycott from supporters of gay marriage is negligible compared to a boycott from Christians. It would be a much better business move to alienate gays.
You can pray however you want, but don't enforce your prayers into law. Too hard of a concept to understand for a sheep, I know.
Since when do you get to decide when something is hateful and offensive? Why is it that liberals are the only ones who get to decide whether something is hateful or offensive?
I believe the verse he quotes in an article I read is 1 Corinthians 6:9-10: Or do you not know that wrongdoers will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor men who have sex with men nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God.
