Just checked my debit card account. I used it twice there in that time period. So far no problems...but I'm not exactly reassured.

Freaking idiots. How do 40 million cards get compromised without pure negligence on their (Targets) part? I was a big fan of Target (vs. other big box retailers like Walmart and Kmart). Now, I'm not so sure...

The thing is, this theft could take months if not years to show up for some of those folks. In the meantime, the phone number to call Target with any issues DOESN'T WORK.

Yeah, they are blowing it big time...

When they first said it was only at stores and not online, I was thinking somebody attached one of those devices on their card readers. But, it couldn't possibly be that if it happened to 40 million customers. It sounds like it happened for everyone who went to any of their stores and bought something using a card. I would have been a victim possibly if I did the trade-up on the iPad but I didn't so... .

I guess I'm wondering what happened technically. Did they elude to anything anywhere about how exactly they captured all the cards? A breach into the Target network?

I don't know, but I would guess they have a different billing platform for their internet sales than the software they use for their in-person card transactions. So, one system was hacked, and the other was not.

Just found out a friend had an attempt to charge on her card for $700 at Best Buy.com at 2 this morning. Her card company rejected it based on fraud, thankfully. My wife used our debit card there a couple of weeks ago. She went today and got a new card issued and had the old one removed.

I've been there about 3 or 4 times in that span using 2 different cards. Damnit.

It was probably an inside job. At my company, this one warehouse keeps getting broken into. Fourth time in a few months. It's so bad that they have people guarding it now. Millions of inventory was stolen. What's bad is that they don't even try to implement a better security method. Maybe something similar happened to Target. Statistic shows that the biggest theft in companies are their own employees, not the customers.

My card was on the list. My bank has put spending limits on it and has issued a new one. I don't think I'll be shopping at Target anymore.

How do you know if you're affected? I don't think I used my Chase card on those dates as I've had gift cards to use up, but since Friday, my Chase card keeps getting declined although I haven't reached my credit limit and have paid off my balance.

My girlfriend got an e-mail from Chase saying they'll be issuing new cards for her while limiting the withdrawal and daily credit limit. I never got one of those, so I'm still stumped why my card keeps getting declined.

I'm a Chase cardmember and I got that e-mail too. Question: Are your accounts joint or do you have any other joint accounts? Might just be caution on their part since its not simply card theft, but potential identity theft.

    Just some guesses.

^no, separate accounts. She actually has a banking account with them, that comes with a debit card, and also has a Chase Freedom credit card.

I only have a Chase Freedom credit card. Nothing else affiliated to Chase. I can't make any purchases with it, and have watched my statement closely. Nothing abnormal. Might just have to call them and see what's up, just wanted to know if it happened to anybody else.
