Rockets are better off not going for klove or lma. They should just go after a few more good players, but no need for another superstar.

If the player(s) are flip-able then I can see that. I can't see Bass or Lee as flip-able so that shouldn't be a factor in this case. Also remember that this is a 2 edge sword. If we do trade Asik by Friday, then whoever we trade Asik to can also flip Asik...for something of higher value...to a playoff rival.

How elite is "elite" and how good is "good but not great"?

How about a 7-foot 4.4pt, 6.8reb unprofessional backup center with a $15M balloon payment next year
    vs
a 16.5pt, 8.1reb power forward that plays both ends of the floor?

I know I'm exaggerating but you get the idea. Let's try to be objective, Asik is around No.4-8 as a defensive center in the league, but counting in his offense (one of the worst starting center), he may barely crack top 10 even if you value defense heavily. Paul Millsap is arguably a top 10 PF in his own right, and his recently performance has been even better.

I do believe Asik undervalued on the market based on advanced defensive metrics, but most teams aren't buying into that stuff yet. It is Morey's advantage that he can identify Asik as a supreme talent and sign him while other teams are blind. It's sad that we can't just play him to our advantage, but when you have to trade him, it's the majority of the less sophisticated teams that dictate the market.

Lee would def be an upgrade over Garcia, and Bass would be a more than capable backup behind Jones... But this trade doesn't seem like a win now move. I'd be mildly shocked if that is what the Rockets get for Asik. If that's the haul, I'd tell Asik to be a professional and suit up. Cause as of right now you ain't going no where.

I agree. The self-imposed deadline seems silly and I wouldn't be surprised to see Asik stick around. It feels like a manufactured strategy to create a storm of bids at a time when trade talks are typically cold. Morey doesn't need the degree of flexibility he's pretending to want right now, he hasn't gone mad playing with chess pieces. Like he's realllly going to regift the player he gets this week? We get it, Daryl is a nut/genius but this is too much.

    Happy Birthday Coach McHale!

Morey always pulls trades that nobody sees coming. I wouldnt think anything would change now.

That's only if we can get good values in return now. If not, who's to say we can't flip Asik himself come Feb 2014? Right now a lot of teams are still in wait and see stage. By Feb trade deadline, some teams are bound to get desperate.

And who knows, maybe after today if Asik is still on the team, he will come to some senses and realize his pouting has actually hurt his trade value and not many teams are interested in him. Then hopefully he would stop pouting and start helping the team.

The most ridiculous post of the thread. It's too close to Christmas to work.

How is Asik more valuable to the Rockets?

    1. Because having him play 18 minutes backing up Dwight and having a contract that expires in 2015 is more valuable than getting back players that can't lock down the paint behind Dwight and have contracts that clog up the cap past 2015.

    2. Because we can get more trade value for him at a later time if we aren't given appropriate value for him right now.

Secondly, what skill set does he have?

Very simply, he is one of the top 3 defensive centers in the NBA. And defensive centers are rare to begin with. He arguably MAY be the best defensive center in the NBA. But if not he's right there with Dwight and Roy.

Can he guard a center or PF that can shoot the mid range?

LOL. Yes, he can. And quite well. Youtube Asik/Griffin for further evidence.

Is he athletic enough to cover the weakside by getting over and blocking or disrupting shots?

Quite simply, Asik is one of the quickest/fastest centers in the league. He covers MILES of floor space.

Does he have any value, whatsoever, on the offensive side of the ball?

Limited value on the offensive side of the ball. But he does have great vision and is a very good passer. No, he can't catch in traffic and yes he is a poor finisher. But he makes up for it on the defensive end and he can be played in such a way offensively that he opens up the paint for perimeter players that want space to drive. He is not a huge liability on the offensive end.

It's more a case of getting something useful back for a guy who's never going to play for us again (and has a steadily decreasing market value). I highly doubt Bass/Lee will figure into our long term plans, but they both are capable of contributing in areas of need this year, and the pick would be the real long-term prize of the deal.

Ziggy, it is a prime opportunity. IF Morey can convert Asik now to a huge expiring deal and a couple good picks THEN he can combine that deal with a deal for Lin and have a nice haul of assets to present to a team at the trade deadline. It is an opportunity. And once again I feel like the reason Morey is pushing to get a deal done now is because he's already got a deal for Lin that he wants to do and if he can do an Asik deal in conjunction with Lin's trade then he is set up for Feb. 20th AND the off season.

    It is an opportunity.

I don't care about his size but Millsap is a more skilled player in terms of scoring.

I think Asik is more valuable than Millsap.....but given the circumstances DM is at a disadvantage as he's more under the gun than any trade partner. So other GMs have more leverage on him than vice versa. Because of that expect only 75% value for Asik. The best thing he can do is create inflated that value slightly higher by creating a bidding war but even then I wouldn't expect more than 80% value.

It sucks to not have the leverage. In most every other situation DM got into it with the leverage on other teams. He's in this situation now with little leverage because he got D12 (in essence forcing him to trade Asik). I think giving up some leverage with asik was a more than fair price to pay for D12. It's time to for DM to pay up a little now.
