The Texans have used pancakes as a smokescreen in the draft a million times. Wouldn't shock me one bit if PK is being used either.
Bortles won't be much in the NFL. He reminds me of a more mobile Schaub. He doesn't seem to throw the deep ball well, and from the little I've seen of him, he relies on rhythm and short passes. His ceiling is somewhere between Roethlisberger and Schaub. Bridgewater has all the tools and is pro ready. In my opinion, which matters none, a team would be stupid to take Bortles over Bridgewater. Absolutely stupid. Bortles isn't even the best quarterback in his conference. We're not the Cleveland Browns. Please don't let us turn into the Browns.
I feel a little apprehensive about bortles, not because I know anything about him, but because there are more pictures of his girlfriend than him when you google search him
First time on the Internet? People can have opinions on anything, even things they know nothing or little about
This sounds like a team drafting after the texans hoping and wishing we dont take bridgewater so he falls to them... I chalk this up as nothing more than draft mind games. One can only hope bob and rick are smart enough to laugh at it @ select the best qb.. Teddy Bridgewater.
This. According to Casserly (which I guess can limit the effectiveness of such argument), what he did and what other GMs that he knew did, was use all in-house measures pre-draft and paid attention to absolutely no outside noise until 2 days before the draft to get an idea of what everyone else thought the values were. -Casserly radio interview in DC area circa 2011/2012
There is not a sure thing at QB in this year's draft. You can't afford to miss on a 1.1 pick -- priority #1 is not to secure a top flight QB -- it's to secure a great player. There is no top flight QB in this years draft... Take Clowney or Matthews #1, then grab the best of Mettenberger, Aaron Murray, Bortles, or AJ Mccarron in a later round. Mental makeup is #1 in choosing a QB. If we draft this year's version of Geno Smith, Matt Leinert, Vince Young, then this entire season was a waste and we're disadvantaging ourselves for years.
Haha matthews is no "sure thing"... He has issues as well. Not to mention clowney's lack of production and red flags.
This is completely untrue. He's probably one of the better pure passers in this draft class. UCF's offense is not timing or rhythm based in the slightest. The knock on him is that he's not a standout in any particular fashion. He manages the game well and has above average physical tools, but he lacks highlight reel plays or any signature wins/games that guys like Manziel and Bridgewater have. I agree with his likely ceiling being somewhere in the top 8-12 of NFL QBs, but it won't be because he can't run a pro-style offense or get the ball down field. I can see him and Bridgewater being NFL fixtures for a long time.
Those QBs will probably be nothing more than just average NFL QBs...there is no point in passing up a Bridgewater, to grab a QB that might become a Ryan Tannehill one day. Bridgewater might not be a sure thing, but he is closer to a sure thing than any of the QBs we can get in the 2nd or 3rd round. Gotta have a very good QB to be relevant in the NFL...having Clowney, but rolling with an avg QB gets us nowhere.
While I'm perfectly okay with waiting on QB until round 2, I also recognize that at this time there does not seem to be a clear cut can't miss guy worthy of #1 at any other position. I don't know enough about any of these guys, but I get the impression that Clowney has some motor issues/character problems. Matthews may very well turn out to be great, but it's hard to justify a RT as your first overall pick (since we already have a franchise LT). I'd be okay with trading down to get him, but I'd rather gamble on Bridgewater or Manziel at such an important position than take a good RT. I'm sure it will become more clear after the combine, but for now I'm not sold on anyone.
I once heard something about the people that get arrested on the TV show Cops. Everybody arrested on the show has signed a release to appear on the show. When they see themselves on screen, screaming, toothless, wearing a wife beater and beating their wife beater and beating their wife, they see themselves as majestic warriors of all that is good and true, while the rest of us see something between comical and sad. Perhaps I should know better by now, but when I see idiots acting foolish, my natural instinct not to point and laugh, but rather to try and gently help them realize they appear from a distance. This is probably wasted effort, but when I see Jerry Springer or Cops or whatever, I just get really uncomfortable and embarrassed for the people making fools of themselves, while the rest of the world seems to find it entertaining. I can't help that this is my reaction. The same is true for those Borat type movies. Everybody around me is laughing hysterically, and I'm feeling uncomfortable for the people on screen.
1st round QB'S since 2010: 2010: #1 Sam Bradford #25 Tim Tebow 2011: #1:Cam Newton #8 Jake Locker #10 Blane Gabbert #12 Christian Ponder 2012: #1 Andrew Luck #2 RGIII #8 Ryan Tannyhill #22 Brandon Weeden 2013: #16 EL Manuel I think Bridgewater looks pretty good relative to that list. He may not be a sure thing, but he's blue chip relative to Tannilhill, who was a third round pick at best when his season ended. He has a more natural talent than the clear reaches, like Weeden or Gabbert. It's also clear that your prospects for getting a stud drop like a rock if you don't pick in the top 10. My concern is that if they don't go QB'S while they have the chance, the talent on the team is good enough that a new coach will have the team picking around 15th for the next five or 6 years, and the team will blow several 1st round picks on guys like Ponder or Weedon. If they do their research and decide to pass on Bridgewater, they really should start TJ Yates all next year so they have another shot at #1 overall again.
When the Texans drafted David Carr, I wrote a piece about the subtle yet important distinction between "first overall" and "first round" QB. Going back to 1970, the % of first overall QB busts is dramatically lower that first round QB busts. I wrote it (jeez) 11 years ago - but I think the distinction still holds. If we (ahem) group Carr into the few first overall busts and update our list to include 2003-2012, we can add Palmer, E. Manning, A. Smith, Stafford, Newton and Luck to the "not a bust" category (I recognize Smith is iffy - But, he's like 50-1 the past 3 seasons) while putting just Russell and Bradford into the bust category with Carr. (And, to be fair, Bradford was having a *very* good year until he got hurt in '13.) So 9 of 12 hit (with only JaMarcus being just a flat-out day 1 bust), continuing the trend that first overall QBs are far less of a gamble. I'll dig up the article and post it, if anyone cares.
Furthering my point, good quarterbacks have been taken in the 2nd and 3rd rounds of the last two drafts -- several being better than those taken in the first rounds. Remember, having a low paid, good quarterback is the single most valuable asset in the NFL. It affords you the luxury of paying more at other positions. Look at the Seahawks and 49ers as examples. 2012: Russell Wilson: 3rd round; Nick Foles: 3rd round; Kirk Cousins: 4th round 2011: Andy Dalton: 2nd round; Colin Kaepernick: 2nd round What if this is a draft like 2007, where Jamarcus Russell goes first then Brady Quinn, Kevin Kolb, John Beck and Drew Stanton? Or 2006 when Vince Young and Matt Leinert went off the board very early in the 1st round? Would you be glad you force-fed a QB into the draft slot then, since "you can't win without a QB"? Obviously, the answer is no. Round 1: Take a can't miss solid player. Don't force a QB when they don't deserve the draft slot. Round 2 or even 3: Take a chance on Mettenberger/Murray/Bortles/McCarron
Other current starters from those drafts: 2011 2nd round Andy Dalton Colin Kaepernick 2012 3rd round Russel Wilson Nick Foles 4th Round Kirk Cousins 2013 2nd round Geno Smith 3rd Round Mike Glennon There will be potential in later rounds for QBs.
