So.. -The manager says they will tell us who gets the job by 12/9/13. - she doesn't email us whether we got the job or not (me, my friend, and most possibly others) - my friend gets an email on Wednesday after she emails regarding her status, I don't. The manager stated she was busy, then 2 hrs later sends another msg to her saying she got the job. - I send a follow up email regarding the job asking for my status and thanking her, No reply - I talk to the employees and those that interviewed me, they said she is gonna reply whether I got the job or not, she is not gonna leave me hanging. So my question is, How do I follow up or whether I got the job or not? I already sent out an email after an interview, so whats next? Just sit and wait or call her office? What do I say this time? Also.. -What are the best ways to follow up an interview? - When should you follow up an interview (after how long)? - What should you write/say in your follow up message?
It sounds like you already sent an email follow-up. I'd possibly leave it at that. How many positions were to be filled? If you're friend was hired and one position filled are there more left? At most you might call tomorrow before lunch and check on the status or leave a message stating your interest in working there.
Follow-up calls on two-week intervals, but maybe get the hint after four or six weeks of unrequited voicemails. They may have offered to someone and be waiting for their response, or they may just have too many candidates or other jobs to fill to formally reject you. The real point is to never take a manager's or recruiter's word on anything.
I used to be a big proponent of follow up, for all the good reasons ("Shows you are interested", "shows you have drive", "shows you have persistence", etc). But in these times where the employer holds all the cards, and that hiring managers and even their HR people seem to have so little compassion and even common courtesy about the hiring process, I have swung 180 on this... if by the time you leave the interview you don't have strong hiring signals and a feel you have the job in hand, I don't think any additional follow up (outside your own courtesy of a handwritten thank you note after the interview), I would suggest focusing on other opportunities. Case in point... in the past ten years I have interviewed at Dell four times, including in-person interviews all four times. each time I have been told I was a finalist. Each time I sent thank you notes and followed up with the designated HR representative. And in only one of the four times did I ever hear back that I wasn't selected (and in a very courteous and positive manner, btw). In the other three times, I would have multiple conversations saying I was still in consideration, that they hadn't had a decision made, that I should follow up in a week or two, etc. In each of those three situations... I ultimately gave up after weeks of follow ups, without ever being told I was not selected. I can understand not letting the large number of people that apply and even go through phone interviews. But someone that traveled and spent the day interviewing in person? How many courteous rejection letters, emails, or heaven forbid, phone calls could that mean? Sorry to go off on a rant... again, the short answer, move on.
You'll hear back if they want you. The follow-up isn't going to be a difference maker. Just continue to live life as you normally would.
I agree with this post 100%. Times have changed, probably for good, and the only time to follow-up is if you have another opportunity. Such as, "I wanted to check in, just in case you are interested in further conversation, since I have new opportunities emerging quickly." Blah blah, something like that.
I'd move on and go for the next job vacancy. Scratch this one as a loss and get a better one breh. There are countless other opportunities out there, don't waste time on just this one.
They aren't obligated to follow up with you, and many companies don't. That is simply a fact of life. If they are that flaky that they can't respond to a simple email, it may be better that they didn't hire you anyway.
This is exactly why I provide all negative feedback from interviews via our system's automated email. Ideally I'd like to personally call everyone I interview to provide feedback, but between interfacing with candidates who WERE chosen and finding and attempting to contact new candidates for other open positions, there's often little time to double back and call those that weren't chosen. It sucks but that's the way it is, for me at least.
Currently, we send out a "Yeah we got your application, but you will only hear from us if we feel you are a fit".... There is no follow up beyond that. DD
UH main campus? You know it's a week before Christmas break right? Most Departments are half full because of vacations - I don't think anything will happen this this week week...
Yea. Main Campus. I was expecting to get the job by last monday but I guess not. I'll just apply elsewhere over the winter break. I just really wanted to work on campus so I don't have to drive a lot.
Just make sure not to sit around waiting for this one, throw out some more applications. I'm sure you know this but just a friendly reminder
Not sure how much has changed since I worked there, but there were times where it took them two months to reply back or to tell me the job opening had been cancelled.
