Yes. My media room is setup that way. My DirecTV receiver is in the Satellite input. My Google Chromecast is in my PC input. And of course my projector is output. So I just need to switch between Sat and PC. I watched Skyfall on that the other day via Netflix app and it looked great. I can't recall for sure but I'm pretty sure the 5.1 audio worked just fine.

Any of y'all watching NFL games through your Chromecast?

For those without the NFL Sunday Ticket deal through Madden, how are you able to watch it through Chromecast and what sites are you using to stream through?

I bought one of these but have yet to hook it up. If I have a hard drive with digital movies hooked up to my router through USB, how can I play them through this?

use chrome as the browser (download chromecast first)
and then user your browser to go to your directory, click on the movie file and it should play

Quick question for anyone with an iPad or iPhone:

Has anyone been able to connect to their chromecast using Songza (the app)? I've updates everything and all other apps work but Songza doesn't even have the option to cast to the TV.

Sorry. In specifically using the iPad app. iPhone app works fine with the cast in the upper right but nothing shows up on the iPad.

Google opening Chromecast to all developers

    February 3, 2014 | Seth Rosenblatt

Google throws open the development doors to Chromecast so that app makers can get their apps on your TV.

A key part of Google's plans to build the future of its Chromecast dongle has slipped into place as the company unlocked its Chromecast software development kit on Monday morning.

The Google Cast Software Development Kit (SDK), available now, will allow app developers to give their users the option to stream their apps or Web sites to the Chromecast, which acts like a receiver that you plug into your TV's HDMI port. Web site compatibility only works in Google Chrome via extension, also available today.

The Cast SDK has been available previously only in restricted form, with Google working with well-known companies such as HBO, Pandora, and Netflix to prove the device's worth. Now that it's open to all, developers will be able to register devices and apps for testing and publishing. Once the Cast SDK has been integrated with an app, current users can get the updated app through their regular app marketplace.

Chromecast's future depends on developers making their apps compatible with the device.

"With the Chromecast, we're resetting consumer applications," said Rishi Chandra, Chromecast's director of product management. People, he said, "should expect their phones or tablet applications to just work on the television."

That's a major change for people on both the development and user ends of the app. If the Chromecast's upward trajectory continues, you can bet it will play a big role in Google's desire to get on all your screens.

Chromecast's limited development has thus far demonstrated only a small part of its potential, tapping into video, music, and local media applications like RealPlayer Cloud. Its future, said Chandra, depends on developers.

The new Chromecast SDK will allow more kinds of apps to show up on your TV, including locally stored files and games.

"Gaming is an exciting opportunity for what you can do with Chromecast," he said, as one example of an area where developers could spend more time. "It's exactly the right model. The fact that it works with your iOS phone and Android tablet and Windows laptop is true multiscreen. There's a lot of potential there," he said.

As simple as the Chromecast is, making sure that it was easy to develop for took some time. One thing Google learned, said Chandra, is that Chromecast developers are like Chromecast consumers: they want it to just work.

When it comes to the SDK, he said that "developers don't really need or want all the features. They want turnkey solutions."

When it comes to all things Chromecast, the geniuses at Google may have finally learned their lesson: keep it simple, stupid.

Yeah, it's awesome news for the gadget. Finally, more apps. And there should be MANY of them soon. Can't wait.

Update me with the best ones so I can break my chromecast out again. (It's plugged into the TV. By "break out" I mean flip to HDMI 3.)

l'm excited; I was just saying that the chromecast is probably the best $35 l've spent technology wise. I'm ready to chromecast Plants vs. Zombies 2 on the big screen.

It's definitely one of the best devices I've bought in a long time....with no buyers remorse. I love it, excited about the immediate future now with the SDK out.

New app, to add the cast button to videos in browser.

VidCast also works with the Plex media center software. Plex has a Google Chromecast app, but it requires a Plex Pass subscription. With this bookmarklet, you can send local files on your network directly to the Chromecast.

Why would you need VidCast since Chrome already casts any page you want?

Does anyone else have problems with HBOgo? My netflix works fine, but HBOGo keeps timing out and is unwatchable. Same with my Roku, everything else seems to work fine. Is it a problem with my wireless router or something.

I get damn HBO just so I can watch previous seasons of Game of Thrones and can't even do that on my tv's. Feel like I'm wasting money.

Its been working fine for me on Nexus 4/7 and Roku XD

I've had problems with NBA Gamecast on my Roku lately tho, sometimes unbearable to watch because of consistent buffering, was fine before Christmas

I was having major issues with my wi-fi reaching upstairs through to the Roku even with an extender. I ended up buying these TP Link Poweline Adapters, paired them and now it's like I'm running straight from the hardline, rarely if ever any lag at all now. Completely worth it and it's super easy to set up. You have to plug them into the wall though, not a power strip.
