Free Agent QBs are expensive if they even hit the open market. Even *****y ones like Matt Schaub. Just look at the extention Smith gave him. Cutting all those players would be great but not because it leaves room for signing a QB that some team refused to keep.

On the surface yes, but teams work wonders in the NFL. I really am not an NFL cap expert, not because I don't try to be, but because it's a complicated task. You see a ton of NBA cap experts online and in the media, but they are few and far between when it comes to the NFL. I'm positive we can up with a plan to bring-in a McCown-level QB.

But again. I'm not necessarily against Bridgewater.

Chicago is giving all indications that they are going to keep Cutler even though Josh McCown has really done a great job. McCown is 34 so he's only got a couple years left. If he hits free agency and Chicago indeed goes with Cutler I think he could be real value for a couple years while we draft a guy like Bortles in the 3rd or 4th round and let him develop. That is if Keenum fails.

    Draft Closney.
Sign McCown cheap. Draft Bortles in the 4th.
Let McCown, Bortles and Keenum compete for the job with the others being the backup.
If Bortles doesn't win the job outright (rookie, doubtful) let him be inactive and develop.

By getting rid of a lot of dead weight, the Texans would be able to offer a competitive signing bonus and 3 year contract to a FA QB. Sure, they wouldn't have been able to sign Manning if he was coming out, but Cutler isn't at that level.

Note, I'm not advocating signing a FA QB, just saying that its not impossible.

I am more concerned with JJ WATT's new contract.

His contract isn't up any time soon. No Ned to worry about that for a while

His rookie deal is up after next season and we will probably want to resign him before than so he doesn't hit free agency. So yes we do need to worry about it. Waisting cap space and not looking towards the future is why we are in this mess.

The clock for JJ's new contract will start ticking December 30th, 2013. It's imperative that he get his new deal before the start of his final season.

If you look at the Texans salaries, all the big, cap-killing players are gone by the time JJ Watt gets his new contract. This isn't even factoring in that football contracts are very versatile in terms of front/backloading.

Let's say JJ Watt at least for the first few years of his contract averages $15mil/yr in terms of cap hit that's somewhat backloaded. That's basically equivalent of giving up Daniels+Manning+Myers and replace them with rookie contracts.

Chicago spent a boatload upgrading that O-line this last offseason. McCown would not have the same success behind ours.

I'm still in favor of drafting Clowney or Barr. Even Matthews to be honest. Grab Hundley, Bortles, or Carr in the 2nd. Wouldn't mind gambling on Logan Thomas in the 3rd either.

OK, so it's Clowney with the first? Which QB do they target and in what round?

As I said previously, it's hard for me to get excited or on board with any of these guys but Clowney or Matthews it is.

I don't think there are any franchise QBs in this class

    Teddy Bridgewater(Top 5)
    Derek Carr(Top 10-15)
    Blake Bortles(Top 15 to 1st round)
    Johnny Manziel(Top 15 to 1st round)
    ---------------
    2nd round or later
    ---------------
    A.J. McCarron
    Jimmy Garoppolo
    Zach Mettenberger
    David Fales
    Brett Smith
    Tajh Boyd
    Aaron Murray
    Stephen Morris
    Logan Thomas

I'm throwing my hat for now into the Clowney ring. No QB has obviously demonstrated a resume worthy of the #1 pick in my mind. It's a really deep draft for QB's, so there should be many good ones remaining in the 2nd and 3rd rounds. Maybe we'll find a Russell Wilson tucked away back there. Logan Thomas and Aaron Murray seem to me to have potential to way outperform their likely draft stocks. I do NOT want Mettenberger.

You always take the QB. This is a QB league. Choose the one you like the best.

Clowney. This team is sooooo bad right now I don't know if Bridgewater is the franchise QB that could turn this train wreck around. Get Clowney, a solid young QB 2nd round and sure up OL.

Clowney has red flags all over the place pertaining to his character and motivation. Many speculate that once he cashes in his millions he could turn into a lazy player. Not shown much this year other than an obvious desire not to get hurt.

I can respect the opinion that Teddy B isnt 1st pick worthy ( I completely disagree) If defense is the side that will be addressed then you should take the pass rusher from UCLA.

Clowney has 'strip club shooting' written all over him.

Lawrence Taylor would go unstaffed with this reasoning.
