You can almost book it that Lovie will get the job. As I said before, the most predictable thing about Uncle Bob is his predictability. Same with Bridgewater or Manziel. You can almost hear the clicking when McNair is thinking, click, click, click, click, click, click, click, click, click, click, ding, Lovie! No accountability, no bold thinking. McNair runs the Texans like a department store, image, image, image, image before everything, nothing bold or controversial, just the same old things over and over again.
Picking Kubiak as HC/GM by your definition wasn't a "McNair" type move then. No previous HC experience, was only a career backup QB as a player, had no previous GM/personnel experience... pretty bold choice there. Not supporting him picking Lovie, but it wouldn't be the "same old things over and over again" either. McNair is usually advised what to do by consulting firms... and he's using the same one this time that he did the last time... maybe you should get mad at them.
Bob was just putting up a smoke screen till his man became available. Introducing your new Texans head coach! (drum roll) MACK BROWN!!!
Yeah it's really unfair. The Texans have a history of success and good decision making, yet this ignorant and ungrateful fan base knocks every thing they do regardless.
If Wade is named head coach, I don't know if I'll be able to root for this team. Sad thing considering I've been a diehard defender of everything this franchise has done, even in the worst times, since day one.
You have to get the feeling that an offensive-minded coach will have the advantage, given the fact that we will be drafting a qb of the future in the first or second round this year. Thus, I say we hire Whisenhunt and will either draft Bridgewater, or we'll trade down for his choice of either Johnny Football or Brett Hundley. Of those two, I think Hundley will be the better pro. And that is if he comes out this year.
Greg Roman would be my choice... has ties to the previous Texans regime, has shown the ability to work out problems with existing QB's (Smith), or help develop new QB's (Kaepernick). If you truly believe Whisenhunt is responsible for what is happening in SD (even though McCoy is), Roman should get every consideration for what is happening in SF (even though its mainly Harbaugh's team/system). But, of course, Bob is already eliminating top assistants without HC experience from the hunt... a huge mistake.
Obviously, the choice of the coach is shaping up as a monumental decision for this franchise. The near future will be determined by the selection. Continued mediocrity or a breakthrough. A time for a BOLD choice. Unfortunately, I agree with Raven; doesn't seem to be Uncle Bob's style.
My choices, in order are: 1) Rex Ryan if fired by NYJets 2) David Shaw 3) Bill O'Brien 4) Lovie Smith
I need to start keeping a list of things the Texans never, ever do ever - like signing big-time free agents, firing coaches in mid-season... I get the apathy - but he's made two head coaching hires in 12 years; both wildly different. So this idea that we have some definitive read on Bob McNair is silly. And if the sources are true, re: his wish list, there's nothing to suggest predictable, lazy, good ol' boy and/or all these other things thrown at him: Smith, Whisenhunt and O'Brien are all very solid candidates. And while it exists, and we haven't heard differently, I'm a little dubious of putting too much stock in a comment made at a pretty raw, emotional news conference to announce the pretty hasty and unexpected firing of a head coach. Maybe he will be resolute in the "HC/NFL experience" requirement; but maybe he'll also back away from that as he settles into the search; especially if he doesn't find what he wants from the "HC/NFL experience" candidates.
I for one hope he sticks to his "Needs NFL experience of some kind / Needs HC experience of some kind" mandate.
Kubiak was fired because he tried to win a game. The irony! And thanks for reminding us about the Ed Reed signing. What a battle fighter!
