Took my wife's computer (just so we know this isn't due to p*rn) to best buy and it has 40 viruses on it. It is an ASUS and I only paid $599 for it. They want $200 for geek squad tech support to get it fixed. There is no way in hell i am paying 1/3 the cost to fix it. Lost the operating disc so wanted to see if anybody could give a good link to getting rid of viruses for free. I really appreciate any information given.

Just an fyi, already tried the typical AVG and malwarebytes. Neither found anything. It is windows 8 and the issue is internet explorer keeps crashing or redirecting to a fake google homepage.

Can you boot into safe mode?

Does the computer have a disc drive?

I would try booting into safe mode (continuously tap F8 when the computer turns on) and select safe mode with networking. From there, download malwarebytes and hitman pro and run them.

If it's a much more serious infection, you can download Hirens Boot CD, burn the ISO, boot from CD on your computer, and remove all the crap that way. It will load up a portable version of Windows XP

Edit: You said you tried malwarebytes. Is it up to date? Also, try HitmanPro

Try Combofix. It has found stuff for me before that Malwarebytes couldn't.

Google redirect? Sounds like a nasty rootkit embedded in your Windows registry.
Yikes, that one took me FOREVER to get rid of.

If all else fails try going to bleepingcomputer.com and asking for help.

AVG with the latest virus updates didn't find anything out of 40 viruses? I find that hard to believe. I use AVG regularly albeit on Windows Vista but, if that fails, then SpyBot-SeekAndDestroy and MalwareBytes never fail me.

Shot in the dark, but check the properties on your Internet Explorer shortcut. I've seen where the properties were changed so that no matter what your homepage is set to, it is being forced to a Google or Bing lookalike page.

Right-click the IE icon that you use to launch the browser, and go to properties. In the target bar, remove everything after iexplore.exe" (keep the last quotes after .exe)

Also, if you can get into IE without it crashing, go the top right icon that looks like a gear and go to Internet Options.Go to Advanced tab and do a reset (delete personal data if you want), and go from there.

Got some more information that geeksquad left on her computer, so not sure if this will help but there were a total of 40 infections found. 16 found by PANDA, 10 found by webroot system analyzer and 14 found by hijack this. With this being case anybody have new information or just try what has already been suggested?

Thanks again for all the help.

I had google redirect and tried all of the most common solutions and virus programs that didn't work. It ended up being an extension installed on firefox and on chrome that was easy to remove once I found it. Go into the Settings tab of your browser and then look at the extensions. See if anything weird is in there.

the key to solving this is telling us what the symptoms are..how do you know it has a virus? does it have pop ups? redirects your search? don't just randomly run scanners all over ..you will end up removing some of it and that's more of a pain.

we need to identify the exact malware it is..and then remove it with surgical precision.

I don't want to hijack this thread, but anyone know how to get rid of "aartemis"? My laptop has it. Basically every time I start firefox, chrome, or IE, the home page is aartemis.com. I read that it's a virus but can't seem to get rid of it. TIA.
