Hempstead principal ban students from speaking Spanish

I like this line from the letter that went out to parents:

"The letter that went home on Dec. 2 stated that “neither the district or any campus has any policy prohibiting the speaking of Spanish.”

 

what about Spain?

 

I think that the authorities in Spain support the children speaking Spanish in class. :grin:

 

I have no problem with it. If a student can't understand English he shouldn't be in class to begin with. He should be learning English in class first.

 

Maybe I'm just getting old, but are classes these days so bad that students won't even stop talking during the teaching session? I went to public schools with sizable Hispanic student population growing up. But I don't remember too much disruption of class in any language, Spanish or English. During class, the teacher does have the right to write up any student that make disrupting remarks, regardless of language.

Of course, if this is about banning Spanish within the school regardless of location and time, then that's just plain wrong and should not be allowed.

Any talking in any language not centered around the lessing and learning should not be allowed.

If it was an English Language lesson, then talking should be in English unless the students speak none at all and need to ask for the restroom or a pencil or something like that.

If it's Math where the focus is learning numbers and number sense, a native language could help them get that concept, and there should be no problem with that at all. Same goes for science of social studies.

This is an abhorrent dismantlement of free speech, but let's not pretend we don't know what these dumbass kids were doing. Probably talking **** and being smartasses in Spanish so they don't get in trouble.

Simple by speaking it I have friends who's parent have learned to speak english by trying to use only english when away from home.

By speaking english with there kids if they didn't know how to say a word they would explain it basically teaching them english.

This type of stuff really makes me not look forward to dealing with teachers/schools once my daughter comes of age. I have zero patience for ignorance and stupidity, especially when dealing with children. I can see myself now being banned from PTA meetings or being escorted away from a parent teacher conference by campus PD. At any rate, I have at least 4-5 years grow and evolve. So we'll see.
