I don't care if they keep these things or throw them away. I just care that the RIGHT PEOPLE are making the decisions. That we have the proper talent/scheme evaluators to make an assessment and determine the best course for the future.
A 3-4 defense is based on having OLB's that can get pressure on the QB, but that hasn't happened yet this season. We might as well move to a 4-3 because I don't think we have very good personnel for the 3-4.
Wade's defenses rely too much on man coverage. Based on the penalties and lack of plays on the ball, I would say he needs to go or we need a complete overall of the secondary.
Wade's big issue is his reliance on blitzes (at least with this roster) to get pressure on the QB. We blitz more than any team in league. I'd have to go back and look at 2010 but I'm be surprised if we blitzed as much as we do now. I worry about Foster in anything other than ZBS, because it marginalizes his strongest asset: his elite vision.
I say get rid of Wade Phillip's 3-4 defense. I've said it all along. Its too simple and predictable. The defense gets picked apart by scrub QB's cause we play so much man to man. Phillips relies on his defenses talents too much to make the plays. The defense falls apart whenever a key player goes down (cushing, Joseph). Where are the stunts and twists tandem with the OLB and DE? Part of the reason why Brooks Reed and Mercilus have not put up huge sack numbers is because they are told to play contain. I want a 3-4 zone blitz defense like the Steelers or the Ravens. I want unpredictability. I want exotic blitz coming from every angle. I want one down lineman with his hand on the ground and the rest standing up, not knowing where the blitz is coming from. I want a defense that will keep opposing QB's on their toes not knowing who's blitzing and whos dropping back into coverage.
How has Winston done in Arizona didn't catch the game a couple weeks back and haven't watched them at all lol
Exactly. The KEY of the ZBS is the cohesiveness and complete together of the line working as a unit. It requires even more understanding of where you fit in with scheme in relation to all the other blockers. That is why if you look at OL's like the Packers and Indy, they can run a ZBS without a lot of big-name FA's or high draft picks. A few help but you don't need one at most positions. It is also why Seattle didn't skip a beat while losing both tackles to injury. The biggest thing though is QB play. Keenum has yet to be consistent in reading a blitz and correctly adjusting the blocking and Schaub is not much better. Plus with the short leash in regards to audibles, it made it even harder. With more responsibility on audibles at the line and better QB play, the line will look/play better.
The offense could be somewhat different, but it depends on the coach to what defense we will run. I think a guy like Clowney could play in any system. You figure out how to use great talent.
Hopefully Arian will get a chance to prove the doubters wrong. There will be no more ZBS and his offensive line really sucks right now. It was widely said that Arian Foster was a product of a good offensive line and zone blocking scheme. I wish he can excel outside of those parameters as well.
BTW Ben Tate had astronomical numbers for yards per carry everyone was going nuts. Now he became a normal 3 down back after Arian's injury and he sucks now.
Indeed, he does. I think he is extremely talented. I don't think just anybody can go behind the ZBS and become elite. However, I do think the line/system has played a large role in making him elite as well. Its a perfect symbiotic relationship. Arian Foster was made to excel within the ZBS, and the ZBS was made to excel for RB's such as Arian.
I'm tired of undersized lineman getting ragged dolled. Get us some big fat bone crushers to play smash mouth football.
Brandon Brooks fits your physical profile... And yet he gets tossed around more than the smaller guys.
Unless he's talking about DL, and even though Mitchell's doing okay, I want a monster tackle at the nose or paired with Watt if he were to be moved inside to DT in a 43.
Arian stopped running full tilt once he got his contract. The only guy that has always given 100% on this team is AJ80 and Watt. Hope Watt keeps it up after he gets his record breaking new deal, too.
If you get rid of the ZBS you will only be keeping Brown and Brooks on your oline then. Smith is done, Myers is far too small to be a traditional center in a power scheme and Newton isn't even a good backup. It would be a complete rebuild. As far as the 3-4 goes, I'm a huge fan of it but with our players I think a 4-3 would fit much better. We don't have an outside pass rush at all and we've got a very small NT who wouldn't be able to play in any other 3-4 scheme in the league. You could go with Watt, Mitchell, Crick, Draft Pick next year along the line and be okay. Still lack a lot of depth no matter the scheme. Antonio is all but done as a starter. He can't play the run at all. Crick is already better at it and is being subbed in a lot more now. Although Crick's passrush is lacking I think he'd do well in a 4-3. You can then push Reed back to a 4-3 OLB where I think he could actually play with a positive impact. Not sure how Merci would do though. And obviously play Cush as the Mike. Even once you address the front 7 you still have issues with the DBs. You have about 1 1/2 CB's (Jjo is the 1/2) and a Rookie and Keo at Safety. This so called quick turn around doesn't look so quick to me. I'd be surprised if we get the 6th seed next year let alone compete for a playoff spot. There are too many holes and not all this talent people seem to think we have.
