It makes sense to get a jump on interviewing candidates before other teams drop their hatchets, especially if they have their eyes on a few guys who aren't currently under NFL contracts.
Tough year for Kubiak.. pre-season superbowl contenders turn into worst team in league, mini-stroke, then fired.
It won't happen this year, but I wouldn't be shocked if he gets another HC gig in the future. I wouldn't be shocked if it didn't happen either. Failing in your first stint isn't a death sentence. Bill Belichick went 36-44 with the Browns. Sometimes, when you're not a HC anymore, you can really reflect on what you did wrong the first time and get a clearer idea of how to be better if the opportunity ever arises again. John Fox has done a lot better in Denver than he did in Carolina (Manning helps). Dungy wasn't bad in Tampa but he was better in Indy (again, Manning). Similarly, Pete Carroll wasn't "bad" but he was fired twice in 4 years and is much more successful now with Seattle.
Kubiak just needs to learn to handle the administrative part of being a head coach better. His hiring and firing was piss poor. I've read folks say his offense was outdated, but those QBs were sure missing a lot of receivers who were wide open in this scheme that was also producing top notch rushers. I look forward to seeing how Kubiak does in his next gig after he gets a while to reflect from outside the pressures of HC.
I actually didn't think it would really happen. Way, way overdue, but better late than never. Kubiak seems like a nice person, but "appeared" over his pay grade as a head coach. Never seemed to fit his temperament and skill set. I thought he was a poor choice in the first place. Even last year, the best by far, the "national" games were disasters and then there was the late season collapse. Accountability was lacking; we will now learn some insider horror stories, not that it matters. The decision for head coach is critical. If it is Wade……well, what's the point.
Kubiak’s statement: “I want to thank Bob McNair and his family for giving me my first head coaching opportunity in the National Football League. Bob has treated me with the utmost class and respect throughout my career with the Texans. I am appreciative of him for bringing me back to Houston to coach my hometown team. I want thank the players and coaches for all the work they have put in during my years with the Texans. Though we came up short this season, the work, effort and sacrifice they gave me and this organization over the last eight seasons is not to be taken for granted. I want to wish them all the best. I want to thank the people in the organization for their support over all the years. We could not have achieved our goals without their tireless work and commitment to our team. Lastly, my family and I want to thank the city of Houston for their support of the football team and our family. We had a great run here and we will never forget our back-to-back AFC South Championships. Coming back home was a dream come true for all of us. This will always be our home. Thank you.”
Well, I thought he'd at least make it to the end of the season and be allowed to resign gracefully but after that pathetic mess last night on a nationally televised game, McNair really had no choice but to let him go. I don't believe that Gruden or Cowher will want the job and I'm leaning toward finding someone like Sean Payton. Pete Carmichael, Lovie Smith, David Shaw and Greg Roman would be my choices. Wade's track record as a HC should disqualify him. Extremely nice guy but just not head coach material.
I've wanted him fired since the Texans rolled over for the Jets four years ago, but there really wasn't anything to gain from doing it now. In a way, it's almost more frustrating this way. If McNair is capable of firing Kubiak before the end of the season, why the #### didn't he do it when they were 2-3 or 2-6 and still had a chance to salvage the season?
Now I'm really worried that Rick Smith is Teflon Don in all this. McNair needs to go thermonuclear and blow everyone out associated with this disaster. At this point, I'm praying that McNair hires a diva coach that will insist on bringing in their own GM. Rick Smith needs to be thrown out with the trash, too.
AFC South Championship's, what a stupid thing to say. Bob used the term and now Kubes says it in his statement. How about we save the Championship word for when it counts. Besides, those division "Championships" belong to Peyton for leaving.
Wrong, the last thing this team needs is another mellow coach. We need a coach who's as fired up as Watt and Cush. We need an ass kicker.
Hopefully not a coach that wants to do a celebratory dance for the camera every time he does his job well.

Different doesn't mean better, it just means different. I'd warn against being for somebody simply because they appear to be the exact opposite of what you just had. Just because somebody failed doesn't mean everything about them was bad and everything has to be radically revamped. As an example, people grew to dislike Schaub, even before he became a turnover machine this season, he was criticized for his lack of mobility and seeming unwillingness to throw the ball down the field. Enter Case Keenum who is mobile and takes more chances. Is he better? No. We're still not winning games and in the two games where both Keenum and Schaub played, they put up remarkably similar stats. He's not better, he's just different. If the best guy out there has a completely different personality than Kubiak, great. But if he doesn't, I don't really care. What this team needs is the best coach they can get, and all this other BS doesn't matter.
find it sad that Cushing, an injured player, was the only one really to mention anything about Kubiak's departure. There really must have been a lot of divide in that locker room, or lots of folks are shocked(dont know why...)
I have the first Texas Collage Football magazine with Kubes on the cover. I always like the hometown hero story, but his time has come and long gone. Good Luck Gary!
