Welcome to the Five Stages of Trading with Daryl Morey.

1 - Denial. "NO way DM is asking for that!" "You can't possibly believe that Omer is worth that much!"
2 - Anger. "DM is nuts!" "DM has some nerve asking for this much after that last trade!" "Screw DM! He must think we're suckers to fall for another one of his trades!"
3 - Bargaining. "You're killing me DM! I know we need a center, but not that badly. How about you take a 2 2nd's and this over inflated contract? No? How about just a 1st?" "C'mon DM! Cut us a break! Remember how I helped you with that last trade? Have some pity! If I don't do something this year the owner is going to send me out of town on a railroad car!"
4 - Depression. "I know DM is asking for a mint, but we're SO close to making some noise this year. And the Owners are going to fire me for sure if we don't do Something! They won't accept another year in the 9th or 10th seed. God, I hate my life. Why didn't I stick with Division I?"
5 - Acceptance. "Damn you DM. You realize you're robbing us blind? I can't believe I'm signing off on this stupid trade. You're SO lucky that we're stuck at the 5, or there's no way I'd be giving you this much. Screw you and the Rockets. I don't want to ever hear from you again..."

Special thanks to Kubler-Ross. Who knew that they're fine work would apply to basketball? :p

A tweet went out (I think from Amick at SI) later about how if they cannot get the desired picks they will also be interested in a "high-impact" power forward.

I think all options are on the table right now. I think if the picks & contract offers (that can be flipped) suck, and they get a desirable deal for a Milsap... you do the Milsap deal. Ilyasova or Ryan Anderson.... not so sure about that.

Keep in mind that if the picks and contract offers are bad enough, Milsap might hold more value anyways in a deal to flip.

Still it all just has to do with how good the picks are. I think if Morey can get the right picks, he opts to go in that direction for the sake of going big in February or keeping the picks to have a shot at a Wiggins/Parker/Randle type this Summer (Morey can dream right) who he can keep or flip this Summer.

If any GM has the balls to go for a franchise altering prospect in the draft when he already has two superstars its Morey. This guy has been dieing to move up enough to take a high lotto pick since he got into the league. Also don't forget Morey's missing piece to surround with his stars that he traded for with the 8th pick of the draft years ago in Shane Battier. If Morey gets ahold of a decent draft pick going into this Summers draft... good luck rest of the NBA. Morey's doing work.

No that's not how it works. Let me try and explain:

If a team is going to trade for Asik and not take anything back then they'll have to be able to cover Asik's salary ($8.3M) with cap space. The only team in the league that has that much cap space is Philadelphia. So, most likely Houston will be receiving player/players back in return for Asik. In that scenario the difference in salaries could be a positive,a negative or a break even for the other team. i.e. Trading for Asik could actually save them money if they send out more salary then they take in .

Also realize that you don't pay luxury tax for simply being over the cap. Teams only pay the luxury tax if they exceed the luxury tax line. This year the cap is set at $58.7M and the luxury tax line is set at $71.7M. That means that you could have a payroll of $71M (which is $13M over the cap) and still pay no luxury tax.

Further, the tax rates are enforced in graduated tiers so it's not a flat rate.
Here's how the tax is calculated:

•Portion of team salary $0-$4.99 million over tax level: $1.50 for $1
•Portion of team salary $5-$9.99 million over tax level: $1.75 for $1
•Portion of team salary $10-$14.99 million over tax level: $2.50 for $1
•Portion of team salary $15-$19.99 million over tax level: $3.25 for $1
•Rates increase by $0.50 for each additional $5 million of team salary above the tax level.

I think Asik is still valuable. His value is dropping because ever since they took him off the starting lineups and limited his minutes, he's been depressing. You can see the look in his face when he came back...it's SO DEPRESSING...he doesn't look the same. He looks traumatized and his performance shows on the court.

Very much so. Stein, Adrien Woj, Ken Berger, Sam Amick and sometimes Mark Spears are pretty legit. Always good follows during trade season and draft night.

We wouldn't be able to beat Miami. Neither would anyone else. They would solidify their only weaknesses. They would move Haslem back to 4 and start Lin. The NBA would be screwed (more).

What's the most interesting about this is that the fact Morey is looking for picks in return. That means he is not looking to make another deal where he moves any other player.

How would I know this? Because if he was....he'd be trying to move them now along with Asik as well.

Would Sacramento trde their lottery pick for Asik?

Asik/Cousins is probably the best frontcourt in the West.

Given that Woelfel is a Bucks beat writer, it would seem that Morey has spoken to Milwaukee.

That's actually a very good trade, all the way around, for two teams that are in win now mode.
