I don't disagree. But I do think this team is not a coach away from making the playoffs either. The 11-1 record last year was the real illusion. Also while I'm glad he is gone now and not at the end of the season I don't think people have to be jerks about it.

I tend to agree. I don't think coaching alone is the problem.

The only time those that disagree will voice their opinion is when the Texans are 1-11 nett Season lol

as someone who has been fired, i don't celebrate people getting fired.

secondly, i liked the stability he brought.

lastly, he hitched his wagon to schaub way too long, no excusing it. it has set the franchise back. hopefully they will get a good young qb up and running quickly as they still have a bit of a window

I am saying it. This team is not a coach away from a playoff run.

    i totally disagree...with the timing

If you were willing to do this midseason, why hold out for so long that a change won't make a difference? Also, if the season is lost and you obviously care about this man's dignity (and health) you might as well allow him to finish out the season.

I think mcnair was more upset about the ridiculous penalty yards than anything

I think he originally planned to let him finish the season out, but things like Swearinger still being on the field after 2 major penalties in a row are just dumb.

As someone who believes in accountability at the work place, I celebrate his firing. It was long overdue. Same goes with Marciano. How many other teams and types of employment can you be so bad for so long without getting the pink slip? He needs to take the right side of our O-line and QB's with him when he leaves.

This is 4 years too late. No coach in the NFL was given the amount of time Kubiak was to do nothing without losing their job.

I don't think anybody was saying anything to the contrary, that coaching is the one thing holding us back. The only ones who would make that argument would be those that support keeping Rick Smith.

I think the team is a coach away from a playoff run, a GOOD coach away.

They need a good offensive coordinator - and head coach and they have enough talent - as long as Cushing is healthy.

The Texans seemed at times like they were stifled by Kubiak's ultra conservatism. Like they were playing not to lose. Kubiak's playbook was uber predictable and stale. Whether the Texans were really a race car with a governor is yet to be determined. Leadership makes a huge difference.

Well, Norv Turner nearly had as long and Marvin Lewis would definitely beg to differ about that statement.

Agree with the firing. His time was up. However, I don't think it's fair that Rick Smith got to keep his job and think he's a weasel with the way he wormed himself into the McNair family (making Cal his son's godfather et al).

After years of making timid management decisions, I'd like to see the McNair's make up for lost time by going with an aggressive/alternative approach. Maybe take a page out of the Les Alexander playbook and hire a smart stats-oriented GM ala Daryl Morey if there is such a thing in football. Look at what Daryl has done with the Rockets. Does anyone really trust Rick Smith to do any of that for the Texans?

To change the culture to a winning one, you have to start at the top. In the NFL, since you're dealing with a hard salary cap, the key to a winning team is maximizing value. To be on top perennially, you have to give the team every little advantage you can, which means not wasting draft picks (making smart picks and trading down to maximize value), managing the cap intelligently (making smart FA acquisitions and restructuring contracts).

I feel like the Patriots' front office does a remarkable job at these things year in year out. They are constantly squeezing the most blood out of the unturned stones they find laying around.

Drafting Tom Brady, signing Wes Welker, drafting Julian Edelman, signing Woodhead, list goes on and on. Besides Tom Brady, if they lost their entire roster they could find decent replacements within a season or two and keep on winning. The Pats are also constantly trading down in the draft. They always have a wealth of picks to either use or trade down in order to maximize value.

Rick Smith is simply not capable of this level of smart management. If Bob McNair really wants to build a winning dynasty he needs to start in the front office. Until that happens, I wouldn't get my hopes up for the future of the franchise. Expect more misplaced loyalty and mediocrity.

Exactly one second after Tom Brady retires, the Patriots will cease being relevant. He's covered up years of bad drafting, questionable moves, etc. That's what an all-time QB buys you. It's why almost every single branch from the Belicheck tree has failed - it's a poorly run organization being pulled from the mud by one of the greatest QBs of all-time.
