I think you have to take Clowney, and then take a chance on a guy like Hundley in the 2nd round. Or maybe Manziel falls far enough that you can trade up a few spots to get him.

No one on the Barr train? :p

(Don't know enough about him to say one way or the other.)

So you take Clowney (but questions about his motor/effort).
So you take Bridgewater(but questions about his size or frame? and is he a franchise QB?)
So you take Matthews(but he's a RT and you're not spending a top pick on a RT, even though Jacksonville and Kansas City did last year, but that hasn't really worked out for either team.)

    And Anthony Barr?

I think I'm leaning towards Clowney or Barr and then either 1) draft a QB in the 2nd round or beyond 2) Look at the FA market(or trade) for a QB 3) Draft a QB in 2015.

Although I think you can do 1 or 2 and also do 3.

If we know we're running a 34 again, Barr becomes a definite possibility. He's raw though. I've determined I cant judge 34 pass rushers coming out. I thought Miller was too small (he's huge now). He's in a 43 but he mostly plays "pass rusher".

I would love to draft Anthony Barr, just not sure how smart it is to draft an OLB with the #1 pick. In the last 50 years, only 3 linebackers have gone #1 overall, and 2 of them are considered a bust. I know Barr hasn't been playing LB very long, so he still has tons of potential and he's already a beast.

But, if the Texans want him and they can't work a deal to move back a few spots to get him at #4 or #5, might as well get him with the 1st pick. With the new rookie salary scale it's not a huge risk, financially. Lots of guaranteed money, but nowhere near the contracts they used to give out (I'm looking at you, Bradford).

Again, if the Texans draft Clowney and we're in a 34 then I'm pretty sure Clowney/Barr would be playing the same position. The skill is pass rusher, defensive position titles are becoming obsolete - well, no, not quite, but lines are blurred.

This thread has got it wrong.

With the first pick, the Houston Texans select

    JAKE MATTHEWS

Total Texans move - local ties, A&M product, Oiler legacy - it's Bob McNair's wet dream come to life.

Enjoy watching Schaub line up behind him next year!

He's a stud. Way better player than I thought he'd be. Would be insane to have him at RT. It'd also be insane to invest a first round pick in a RT. Not gonna happen, but if it did he'd be good. Could easily be the best player in this draft - would not surprise me. Stock-wise, it'd be very similar to D'Brickashaw Ferguson coming out and getting passed on for the high upside guys. Ultimately Ferguson hasn't been good but his perceived value was high that year.

Now that we are getting a DC as head coach, you can already order your Clowney jersey.

I'm curious to see where Boyd ends up getting drafted, but my dream scenario would be to draft Clowney #1 and find a way to grab Tajh Boyd later on.

Yes, it is BleacherReport but it is from Dan Pompei, former writer at the Chicago Tribune.

Draft Tip of the Week: Who's No. 1?

With quarterback Marcus Mariota deciding to stay at Oregon for another year, nobody can say with certainty who the first pick of the draft will be.

In fact, a similar scenario could play out to the one that played out in the last draft, in which an offensive tackle who was considered more safe than spectacular went No. 1 overall. In April, it was Eric Fisher. Next May, it could be Jake Matthews (Texas A&M) or even Taylor Lewan (Michigan).

The front-runner to go first is South Carolina defensive end Jadeveon Clowney. But he is not a slam dunk. Every front-office man you talk to about Clowney will tell you that he's not completely comfortable with Clowney and that he needs to do more homework on him.

Scouts like everything they see in Clowney once the ball is snapped. One thought he could break 4.4 in the 40-yard dash at 270 pounds. Two others said he clearly is the most talented player in the draft.

"There is nothing he can't do when he decides to do it," a national scout said. "The problem is he doesn't always want to do it."

It has been well documented that Clowney plays and practices only when he feels like it. Other red flags with Clowney, according to multiple front-office men, are his unusual family situation, his entourage, his inconsistent work ethic and the fact that he has worn out his welcome at South Carolina. Some suspect he is motivated strictly by money, and a big payday could leave him too satisfied.

Of the quarterbacks, Teddy Bridgewater of Louisville is the most likely to go first at this point. But his lack of ideal size and arm strength gives some teams pause, especially when they consider picking him that high.

Clemson wide receiver Sammy Watkins may be in the discussion, but teams typically aren't comfortable taking wide receivers first. One exec said he thought Watkins' stock went down this year because his hands looked inconsistent and he failed to improve his routes.

Outside linebacker Anthony Barr of UCLA could be a consideration for a team he fits. But he won't fit every scheme.

That leads us back to a tackle. Teams picking at the top of the draft are looking for can't-miss players, the safer the better. As the draft draws nearer, front-office men find more and more flaws on prospects. There might not be two safer picks than Matthews and Lewan, and that could result in both of them being chosen very high in the first round.

God I hope Cleveland falls in love with Bridgewater and we can grab their two number ones for our number 1 overall, then I draft this guy and a QB with the other (Carr or Hudley)

    YES YES YES

Regardless of how good Carr is, there's zero chance he will be a Texan. It would be a PR nightmare for a team with an angry fanbase, and the minute he struggles with growing pains, he's going to be attacked unfairly simply due to the team's history with David Carr. It's not a good situation for the Texans and it's not a good one for him.

C'mon, the number 8 should even be available again, it's perfect.

You're right that it won't happen but if you grade Derek Carr as the top QB and you don't pick him because his last name is Carr then you are wrong.

No I was dreaming of getting Clevelands 2 first rounders, taking the Michigan tackle with the first number one and Carr or Hundley QBs with the second number one.... keep in mind I've seen both Hundley and Carr mocked in the top ten... so I'm taking them late first in that scenario... just to be clear.

We need to take either Clowney, Bridgewater, or Matthews

Taking each of these guys has it's tremendous advantages and disadvantages.

Right now Im leaning towards trading down 2-3 picks and taking Matthews.

Why couldn't we have suck in the 2011 season instead of this one?????!!

Manziel has been climbing up the boards and with Mariota out could go top 5. Wouldn't be surprised if the Texans ended up taking him #1 if they don't like Bridgewater.
