The funny thing is that Keenum leading the team to 10 points and an interception against the Jags is accurately identified as "struggling", but Schaub leading the team to 10 points and an interception = "unbelieveable pro" who has alot of great football ahead of him... Does anyone doubt that if Bob brought Kubiak back, Schaub would be the starter next year?
That's true for you and me. Not true for the coach who hopes to get another job next year. Or the players who are not going to be with the team and are auditioning for new jobs. The Texans aren't trying to lose and won't be trying to lose, no matter how much we wish otherwise. Same with all the other crappy teams, which is why 0-8 teams like Jacksonville and Tampa Bay have started winning games recently.
Agreed. ESPECIALLY the players. Kubiak is going to have another job as an offensive coordinator if he wants one, no problem. But the players? They start intentionally playing like garbage and they have a lot of really crappy film out there on them. That can end careers. Travis Johnson has talked about this. It's a big reason players don't like to go to junky team situations. They don't want their film to get dragged down for when they have to go get another contract.
In 8 drives, Case had 5 punts, a turnover, a TD and a FG. In 4 drives, Schaub had a turnover, a drive that ended on downs (would have been a FG if not for circumstances of the game), TD, and a FG. I don't see how anyone can look at the two yesterday and say Schaub wasn't better. That doesn't mean he should be starting or that he will be better in another game, but he certainly moved the ball better in yesterday's game.
If you want to say Schaub "played better", the degree of better is so marginal that it meant nothing. Schaub getting sacked for a 20 yard loss on the last play was an expected finish. That's not to say Keenum wasn't playing worthy of being benched. It's just silly to hear Kubiak praise Schaub as if he just came in and lead us to a victory against a contender. Meaningless "moving the ball stats" are a hallmark of Schaub's tenure.
So to be clear, your position is the fact Schaub wasn't going to be booed when he came in had nothing to do with benching Keenum.
Correct. And my position is that Keenum will continue starting the rest of the season barring injury. He'll be benched in any game, home or away, that gets out of hand where he's sucking.
It's not "marginal". Schaub's pace extrapolated for the whole game (12 drives) would be the team scoring 30 points for the game - or 39 if you include the FG they passed on due to timing. Keenum's pace was 15 points. 30/39 vs 15 is not a marginal difference.
How many times over his career has Schaub have one good half and get shut out of the next? You can't just assume he would keep producing at the same rate, and how are you going to score 30 + if you are averaging an interception for every touchdown?
Good point. And Schaub has a long history of scoring big points but throwing away the game with one or two bad decisions. During his Pick Six Marathon, we were in damn near every game but he pissed it away in a second. Five 'attaboy's can be blown away by one 'aw ****" just like that. Anywhere.
You can't assume that - but if you are looking at how they did in this particular game, then you look at the pace they were on. The difference in pace they were on was substantial - not negligible as you claimed. Schaub led them to the same number of points on half the drives. That's a HUGE difference. The extrapolation was to show you how big a difference.
Of course - I'm driven by facts. Will yours change when he doesn't start? Is your position now that Kubiak wouldn't put Schaub in at home due to the boos, but now is willing to start Schaub the rest of the season even though it would create more boos?
Bob Mcnair has mentioned Case three times in the press conference now. Bob has just called him the starter. Kubiak was fired because he put Schaub in the game.
