More dominant and important is an elite QB since they can carry you to the playoffs. Watt is the best DE in football and what is he carrying us to this season?

Clowney is the safer and least likely to bust pick though.

This should be an easy choice.

You pick Clowney. If we take Bridgewater it's going to be Carr-Peppers all over again.

Go watch Bridgewaters last 3 games and look at his stats. He did not play well and that was against marginal competition.

Well, I thought reading this thread helped make my mind up, but now I'm not sure anymore.

Glad I'm not the one making this decision.

Memphis and Houston have upper tier defenses this year, believe it or not.

Hopefully there's an offer to trade down and pick up more picks. Don't think Bridgewater is a franchise guy.

When you're in the top 3rd of most categories (turnovers, passer efficiency, yards, etc) then I'd say that's upper tier. Memphis is especially stingy with yardage, while UH gives up yards but has a great redzone D and turnover ratio.

    Houston
    Passing Efficiency - 39th
    Rushing Defense - 36th
    Scoring Defense - 16th
    Turnovers - 1st

    Memphis
    Total Defense - 27th
    Rushing Defense - 17th
    Scoring Defense - 34th
    Sacks/TFL - 33rd

Don't see how Clowney gets the can't miss label. He's got 3 sacks this year. Those aren't the numbers of a once in a generation talent.

    JJ had 4 in 09 and 7 in 2010

not exactly screaming once in a generation talent either and look how he turned out. Clowney will be drafted based on potential

Yea I would agree with that but I'd rather have the raw talent of a guy like him who has been dominant his whole college career than a guy who has one season piling up sacks **cough cough Whitney Mercilus** in a crappy conference.

Someone like Dontari Poe who has been a good choice for the Chiefs who didn't have the greatest college career but had all the physical intangibles and has been coached up to a solid DT.

Watt and Poe were both drafted #11, not #1. Easier to take a bit of a gamble on a guy in the middle of the first round than at the first spot. Plus Poe is a NT, and those guys aren't judged on sack stats in the same way a DE is.

I'm not saying Clowney isn't going to be an outstanding DE. He definitely could be. But he's no more a sure thing than Bridgewater is. There are risks both ways, especially if you're trying to plug a 4-3 DE into a 3-4 scheme. For me, with the rules today, a franchise QB is so much more important than a franchise DE. If they're both gambles, give me the guy at by far the most impactful position in the game.

As is the case for JJ, opposing teams are resourcing more guys and schemes to slow Clowney down. 46 tackles for loss and 24 sacks over 35 games is pretty damn good.

That was the lame Mario Williams excuse when he was playing poorly.

JJ draws extra attention and has still has 9.5 sacks this year. And Clowney's stats are down across the board this year. If SEC o-lines can shut him down, what happens in the NFL? Do we just ignore his production this year and pretend like it's still 2012?
