?

Was there probable cause to question the group?

  1. Yes, they were sleeping at a gas station. There could have been something more to it...

Read the letter, call the mom, verify SSN = no story. Arrest the guys, take them to the precinct, force the mom to come from OK = news and perhaps a lawsuit.

They were smart to get that kidnapping voucher; but just on appearances they look like human traffickers.

Normally, I just keep the girl in the trunk. Never had any problem with any racist police.

I hate to be the one to go there, but she may have already made two so happy they fell asleep in the car.

What kind of a parent let's there 13 year old daughter go overnight with two grown men?

Regardless of race, the cops certainly had probable cause to investigate and rule out potential human trafficking of a child.

I think there is much more to this story than police malfeasance.

To me it seems like it would take more than a random phone call to clear things up. At least I hope it would. Because the police would have no clue as to who is actually on the other end of the phone. I'm sure they had to fallow proper procedures.

    http://www.khou.com/news/local/HPD-...ing-with-Oklahoma-teen-dancers-234176921.html

HOUSTON – The Houston Police Department is responding to charges of racial profiling after handcuffing a teenage white girl and removing her from the care of two black men.

Officers took the young dancer to Child Protective Services even though she was right where her mother wanted her to be.

Click on Youtube and you will see a new rendition of Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” with 13-year-old Landry Thompson, her instructor, 29-year-old Emmanuel Hurd and her dance partner, 22-year-old Josiah Kelly. They travelled from Tulsa to Houston, to work with hip-hop artists at Planet Funk Academy and tape a video.

After a long day of rehearsals, on Sunday at 3 a.m., they stopped at a gas station near Memorial Park. That’s when Houston police pulled them all out, handcuffed them and put them into patrol cars.

“They were convinced I was a runaway,” Landry said.

Police then called Landry’s parents in Oklahoma, who were surprised by the officer’s tone. Destiny Thompson recalled the conversation.

“’Are you aware your daughter is with two black men?’ When I said ‘Yes, I’m aware of that,’ he called into questioning our parenting,” the mother said.
Landry is home schooled and travels frequently for dance. The Thompsons asked Hurd to look after their daughter on this trip. Realizing the group made an unlikely trio, they packed a raft of documents.

“Emmanuel had a letter signed by us, had every contact number they could’ve possibly needed, he had her insurance card, he had her original birth certificate, not a copy,” the mother said.

The couple even scanned their driver’s licenses and faxed them to police during all this. The Houston police officers did not believe the parents or the men.

Kelly even said, “Sir, I will dance for you right now.”

In a statement, HPD said, “Given the age discrepancies...and the child had no relatives in the area, officers in an abundance of caution, did their utmost to ensure her safety” and sent her to CPS.

The Thompsons, Hurd and Kelly believe this is a case of racial profiling. They understand why HPD questioned them, but are upset they were not released after seeing all the paperwork, speaking to Landry’s parents and reportedly getting a call from police in Oklahoma.

Hurd said he and Kelly are considering legal action.

The instructor and dance partner ended up following Landry to a CPS facility on Chimney Rock.

When they were told to leave the reception area, the men waited in their car for about six hours outside the front door, until Landry was finally released around 11:30 a.m.

Waiting for more to come out, but wouldn't be shocked if the cops were so predetermined that even after talking to the parents, checking SSN's, and talking to Oklahoma law enforcement, that they still took the girl to CPS and detained her for 6 hours. People are just stubborn when they believe something, cops included.

There are any number of reasons for this. Maybe she and they are both uber-responsible for their age. Maybe she has an older sister and these guys have known them forever. Maybe they are family friends or even distant relatives of some sort. She could be like a kid sister to them. From the article, the girl travels often for these dance events, so this might be something that they've all done before and now they are at the point of trusting these two on their own. We have no idea - it seems ridiculously judgmental to assert that the parents are irresponsible without knowing ANYTHING about the people involved or the relevant relationships.

What we know is that the police refused to believe any and all evidence of their innocence - including talking to the parents, faxed documentation, and even talking to the Oklahoma Police Department. It seems as though evidence didn't remotely matter to them and they were simply determined to believe their initial assumptions.

Good points. Agreed. I still don't question the initial contact, but the cops should have let it go once the proof was presented.

I agree with you. The cops went too far. I'm curious what state they really found the three in and what the three said or did when dealing with the police.
