Maybe. But not based on that. Brian Scalabrine has rings. Flacco has a ring, I'd take Peppers. Marino has no rings, I'd take Marino.
Drafting a QB with the #1 overall is a HUGE gamble. This is why I was originally so opposed to doing it. That being said, I'm starting to come around to the idea. I mean, the entire draft is a huge gamble, right? So why not just go all-in?
You mean like... Brooks Reed? I understand wanting to draft Bridgewater, I really do. But IMO I'm leaning towards pass rush with the top pick. Honestly, I'm hoping that the Texans get the 2nd pick and let the Jags or whomever make the Texans' decision a lot easier by picking first.
Flailing around every year looking for a good QB is an even bigger gamble, no? It's not like taking a QB in the 2nd round is less of a gamble.
Cam Newton currently has the 2nd best team in the NFC right now, RG3 in a down year is still performing better and is more accurate than Andrew Luck, VY and Mike Vick were strictly running qb's... their is no comparison,,, the game is changing Teddy Bridgewater is a slighty better prospect than Matthew Stafford, and a little below RG3 and Luck when they declared for the draft.... some think he is neck and neck with Mariota.... just from watching them play and the scouts take on both qb's is that Mariota is a little better version of Kaepernick, and Teddy Bridgewater is like RG3 with better pocket presence, less arm strength, and less speed
I think you have to differiantiate between black QBs and fast/running QBs. Running QBs have, especially recently, been injury prone by taking the big NFL hits and have not been able to build a consistent true contender. I have obsolutely no problem with having a black QB as the face of the Texans franchise. I do want to avoid a "running" QB as our franchise guy though. I just don't see a true running QB being able to survive in the NFL now a days (Now I do want a mobile QB, that can move around the pocket and pick up a running first down when necessary). This would be my main problem with Johnny Manziel, his accuracy and power don't make up for his willingness and eagerness to run, which works well in college but won't in the NFL. With the NFL giving such favorable protection to QBs in and around the pocket, I'd like a QB that excels there, not one that runs down the field and can get destroyed by eager hard hitting defenders.
Ben had a top notch defense to support him but he was the main cog behind them winning their second super bowl ring in 2008(?). We have/had the number one defense even without key pieces and a few offseason/draft busts. I would take Bridgewater if it meant have a ring the way Ben got those guys one in his rookie season.
I say, why not increase the number of lottery tickets we hold? Trade down and take 2 gambles on a O-Line, CB, OLB, etc instead of 1 on a QB that isn't a "can't miss" prospect.
I love him...I am just not in love with him... He has been consistently excellent in college...but if you look at Russel Wilson's year at Wisconsin, statistically it blows away anything Bridgewater has done. And he was a second rounder... it comes down to two things for me: there is no prospect in this draft that blows me away as a clear cut #1. this team has so many holes to fill on the cheap I think they would be better off trading the pick.
Not sold on Bridgewater. I would take Manziel. His NFL potential is truly underestimated and a lot of people are going to be surprised. Now if the Texans were to trade down, and pick up both an elite pass-rusher and Manziel, I would literally cream my pants.
Our first round selection should be BPA not BQBA. The next regime should draft Bridgewater if they think he's worth it, but shouldn't be afraid to draft Clowney if they think a good QB can be had in the second round, especially if they can trade down, still get Clowney, and pick up some extra picks. With that out of the way, Bridgewater has all the boxes checked, and I'd love to see him in a Texans' uniform.
This was my thinking as recently as a few weeks ago. But I think the NFL has changed over the last few years. I think you DO need an elite QB to win. Look at almost every team that is going to make the playoffs this year. If you have a chance to get one, even if he's not a "can't miss" prospect...you have to take a chance and take him.
I'm a huge Teddy-5 fan, but we can't fall in love with a player because of 1 great game. I remember watching that Sugar Bowl game last season and thinking to myself how lucky Jacksonville was, knowing they would suck this year and assuming they would have the #1 pick to draft Teddy in 2014. Can't believe the Texans have outsucked them thus far. Back to Bridgewater, he hasn't faced too much competition this season, yet he hasn't gone wild and put up huge numbers either. I'd be happy if they drafted him, but I'd also feel good about it if the Texans take Mariota (if he declares) or Clowney instead. I'm no scout, so I'm trusting the new regime to do their homework and make the right choice. Since we're all just stating our own opinions, I'm starting to lean towards trading the pick if the right offer is on the table. I wouldn't get my hopes up on getting the RGIII package, but 2 1st rounders and hopefully a 2nd or 3rd would be fine with me. 1 player that I've never thought much of until recently is Zach Mettenberger from LSU. He has the size, the frame, and an absolute cannon of an arm. Having this new offense and Cam Cameron this season has helped him quite a bit, and I'm starting to feel like he could be an above average or possibly elite qb with the right coaching and development. The problem is, some mock drafts have him as high as the 2nd round, and some have him all the way down in the 4th or 5th. Even if we take a QB with the 1st pick, I'd still take a chance on Mettenberger if he's available in the 3rd or 4th round, just like Washington did with Griffin/Cousins.
Its honestly hard to draft a black qb that isnt an elite athlete without outstanding combine/proday and a player interview that is a homerun. Oregon qb is gonna be good, and with the right performance could be our guy. Manziel cant get away with that scrambling and making plays happen on the fly and just depending on his WR to constantly outjump (and pushoff) the defense in the NFL. There isnt a cant miss qb prospect this year so its time to draft the best player available. Our needs are pretty huge: Qb, S, CB, LB. All of this is gonna depend on who is the next HC and GM. I pray to god that its not Wade and that Wade can head out with Kubiak. His defense takes wayyyy too many gambles, esp lining up ****ty db's in man to man all season long.
You dont know that. No one knew who Russell Wilson was when he was drafted. Bridgewater will be a bust. Trade that pick.
Bridgewater is nothing like RG3. Griffin has poor ability to see the whole field and hit the open receiver. Griffin like Stafford locks on 1 or 2 receivers. Further RG3 has shown no ability to make adjustments. Bridgewater on the other hand has shown an advanced ability to read the defense and make adjustments. The super elite QB's can see the field and make adjustments, it isn't about running or having a rocket arm or even put the ball in a tight window. Manning, Brady, Brees and Rodgers all are exceptional.
That's my point - no one thought Wilson would be elite. It worked out because everyone, Seattle included, was wrong about him. You're basically counting on "hope we're wrong!" as your draft strategy if that's how you hope to get a QB.
