Saw this on 60 Minutes tonight. That is insane!!! Apparently they're trying to get the green light from the FAA and other authorities to finally be able to do this. They expect an ETA of about 4 or 5 years for this to happen in select markets
Fantasy. Won't happen in 5 years. Probably not even in 25. Good video to get people talking about Amazon.
Yeah, not gonna happen. Too many variables. Birds, powerlines, trees, etc. Plus, those things don't look like they could lift much. Amazon has been quite disappointing lately. In the past year, I've been ordering less and less from them because they no longer have the best prices. And it's not just because of tax in TX. They aren't as competitive anymore.
I think you underestimate Amazon. What they've been able to accomplish with Amazon.com was unthinkable a few years ago, just in terms of the sheer logistics. I think they absolutely CAN get this done, even if it won't be easy. Shooting down drones? That would be easy to foil with GPS trackers. As for the things you mentioned -- "birds, powerlines, trees" you really think CURRENT technology can't deal with those things? We have self-driving cars. I work in the semiconductor industry -- you have no idea what modern day microcontrollers are capable of doing.
I'm sure the drone would be destroyed or thrown away and the item will be gone by the time police find the drone.
What's easier? A: Shooting a drone out of the air, trying to find where it lands, and stealing the stuff. B: Following a UPS Truck around and picking up packages from people's doorsteps. There aren't as many criminals out there as you think and most of the world relies on a decent amount of trust.
Last thing I want are these stupid things flying around my neighborhood. Will these things have cameras on them to record data for marketing purposes? Wouldn't surprise me. I'd favor cities banning flying drones immediately.
lol. Shooting drones out of the sky. Where do people come up with this stuff. How often do you see people running around with a rifle in their hands ready to shoot stuff out of the sky? I think the bigger issue is cost and demand. How many people really need their stuff in 30 minutes and willing to pay a huge premium...when they can go down to Target and have it bought by then.
I imagine this will be available only for people living in a house.. how would the thing know where my apartment door is? Also, the fee to get it delivered this way would probably be excessive so who would want to?
this is dumb. If the fulfillment center is that close, why not just make it open to people can physically drive there and pick up their merchandise?
While I think its cool, imagine the liability insurance Amazon would have to carry with these things. They are machines therefore capable of malfunction not to mention weather, criminal activity, etc. I just see too many potential problems and the only way such a delivery service could be viable would be to charge up the @ss for it.
AMAZON ORDERING DRONE STRIKES ON US CONSUMERS? THANKS OBAMA. In all seriousness. In light of the NSA openly penetrating private companies infrastructures to get at private information... this worries me. I thought surveillance drones were a thing of science fiction: not possible... but tied with our lust for materialism it looks like its going to be a certainty.
