Does anybody know why the Clippers are ahead of the Rockets when they are 12-6 and the Rockets are 13-5? Not that it matters at this point in the season.. I'm just curious as to why.
They are Division leaders. We don't have a better record than okc or portland. Basically, 3 division leaders are Portland, LAC and San Antonio. They are guaranteed a top 4 seed. The rest is determined by record. OKC has a better record than us so they are the 4th team in the top 4. At least that's what I think it is
Clippers are leading the Pacific division, so they would be guaranteed a top 4 spot if the season ended today.
I think the 1st three spots are reserved for the division leaders, and the Rockets arent the Division leader. The Spurs are. Therefore, the Rockets take the #4 spot.
Nope. The top 4 seeds are reserved for division leaders. Only one non division leader is allowed in the top 4. Currently OKC is that team.
Playoff Tie-Break Procedures from NBA.com: Teams 1 to 4 in each conference are the three division winners and the team with the next best regular-season record, with the seeding of these four teams determined by regular-season record. The playoffs seedings of Teams 5 to 8 are based upon regular-season record. Ties are broken pursuant to the rules set forth below....
oh ok...thanks for the correction...for some had some sorta hybrid football/basketball thought process for the previous post.
Homecourt isn't determined by automatic division winner seeding, if we for example played the Clippers on the current record, we would have homecourt despite the Clippers being seeded 4th.
Only affects seeding. Doesn't affect home court. In 2007, the Jazz won their division and were the fourth seed. Rockets had a better record and were the fifth seed, but the Rockets had home court in the first round. (Like that mattered) Also, in 1997, the Rockets were the third seed, Seattle was the second seed because they were division winners, but the Rockets had home court. (It actually mattered)
Incorrect, division winners are only guaranteed a top 4 seed. You could have a 2 seed as a non-division winner. Bottom line is 2 best teams in each conference based on record always end up 1 and 2 seeds. By the end of the season, I think Portland fades and the Div Winners end up being OKC, LAC, and SA/HOU. The SA/HOU 2nd place team will take 2nd or 3rd seed overall. LAC will end up as a division winner but a 4th seed.
I really think the Rockets need to be in the top three to make some noise in the playoffs. In other words, we need to win the division. Off to a good start.
The same reason the Raptors are 4th in the East now with a terrible 6-10 record. This needs to be changed.
If a division has the worst 4 teams in the NBA, its leader will still make the playoffs with a top 4 seed guaranteed?
