8-4 with this schedule is pretty pathetic. I was expecting 10-2 worst with losses Bama and LSU at the beginning of the season.
A&M needs a to look into hiring a new OC. Clarence McKinney's playcalling is questionable. He has been a massive downgrade from kliff kingsbury. If I were calling the shots at A&M I would try to pry Clemson's OC away. As for Sumlin. Locking him up now is a good call. He is one of the best recruiters in the entire nation and will have the A&M program stacked with LSU/ Alabama like talent in the coming years.
Looks like the Aggies success is done in the SEC. They had JFF and he is gone after this season. He won't be replaced easily. Even with him, the best they could do was win a Cotton Bowl. They will never jump ahead of LSU or Alabama in the SEC west and Auburn will always be there as well.
Can't believe A&M couldn't do better than 8-4 this season. Mark Snyder is horrible. That defense was just consistently terrible. A&M tried to re-write the book...but you can't truly win in the SEC without defense and a running game. It can't all be on your quarterback.
Yeah... they'll never be good every again. I guess they cant replace Manziel, but they sure are bringing in a lot of upside at QB. But yeah, these are just pee-pee rankings, they'll never compete with anybody in the SEC. Last year was a fluke like the Rockets first championship. TAMU lost to better teams this year. The defense was a joke. They're addressing it in recruiting.
The next couple of years for Aggie football will be interesting. Sumlin seems to need a stud at QB to be successful. On the positive side, remember that Peyton Manning never beat Florida. The year after he left, Tee Martin led Tennessee to the national championship.
Manziel would have been playing safety at Texas. You think Keenum would have been throwing 7 TD's at Rice? Give Sumlin some credit.
Recruiting rankings don't really mean much if you can't develop the talent. See Texas. Garrett Gilbert and Matt Barkley were 5* QBs. That didn't go well either. Not saying the 5* QB is a bust, but you can't assume success just because of a 5* QB and a highly ranked recruiting class.
Mizzou and Auburn's success this year should remind everyone that the SEC is an extraordinarily egalitarian conference. Just about anyone - except maybe Vandy and the Mississippi schools - can be successful there because no one team dominates recruiting or the attention unlike many of the other conferences. There is nothing at all to suggest A&M can't be successful there - those claims come from the same nonsense that said A&M would be bottomfeeders going into the SEC and that Mizzou was making the worst decision ever and would be permanently irrelevant. I especially also love the claim that Auburn - who was 0-8 in conference last year - will "always" be at the top as well.
Sumlin is a gifted offensive coach that needs great QB play to be successful. If he's able to recruit productive studs at other positions, maybe that won't be true going forward. Defense will determine his long term success more than anything else. This is where I doubt him the most and won't change my mind until he gives me a reason to.
Sumlin took a QB named Keenum who had one FBS school offer him a scholarship and he broke all kinds of passing records. All the armchair analysts said Sumlin would be nothing without Keenum. Then he went to A&M, took an unknown redshirt freshman and he won the Heisman. Now he won't be anything without Johnny. Let's just see how the next verse to the song plays out before we bury the coach. Sumlin has been a winner everywhere he has gone. There is no reason to believe that will stop, especially with how recruiting is going. Oh, and I think Sumlin does value defense. The guy was a linebacker when he played. Look at the commit list. It is pretty impressive in the front seven.
So really what you're saying is that you've paid no attention to upcoming recruiting classes, and have also simply bought into the hype that Manziel is the only reason the Aggies were a good football team for the last two seasons. Also, lulz at Auburn "always" being there. They were 0-8 last year in the SEC, but obviously A&M is doomed because Auburn is perennial powerhouse. The funny thing is that this post is literally how 95% of the country feels about Texas A&M. It's pure drivel. In the long-term, we will be fine. This season was a massive disappointment however, and the defense is about 98%to blame for it.
