Genius is such a boxed in term for most people. Ppl live in mental boxes so it makes sense that their definition of genius is also boxed in Kanye is definitely a genius at what he does
http://thetalkhouse.com/reviews/view/lou-reed Lou Reeds take on Yeezus. Might be my favorite Kanye album from front to back.
Ive heard more Kanye West then I've ever wanted to. Kanye said he was a musical genius, therefore he takes on the entire field of music. He's never said POP music. As a matter of fact I'm pretty sure he wont even associate himself as a pop musician. At the end of the day it really isn't worth any more of my time, and if you are defending him, I feel really, really, really bad for you.

There's two kinds of people I can't interact with. People who put animals over human and people who listen to this *******.
yea that thought does come to mind whenever i put one on or it comes on.. like damn how did you change so much
Not sure what he thinks of himself as, that's the thing and that's what seems so troubling. Sounds like he doesn't even think of himself as a musician any more. I listened to both of those interviews. The full interviews, one is around a hour and the other is around 30 mins...I've never seen a public figure with such a large ego. The names he drops when he thinks of himself are historical figures. Like, it is one thing to compare yourself to Michael Jackson...then another to compare yourself to Da Vinci or Shakespeare.
There are people that subscribe to your subjective interpretation of the word and in turn consider Chris Rock a genius... So, then I guess the word loses all meaning... Shakespeare is a genius Mozart is a genius Einstein is a genius Now Kanye and Chris Rock can be geniuses too... It's all relative really, differing time periods, cultural circumstances and environment... Modern casual application of the term is equally valid to it's richly historic application... and anyone that happens to do something we personally enjoy can be a genius..
Remember guys this is a producer that raps very average. He makes some nice beats but most of his are used sampling already created music. So you can take music that has already been created and just find a cool way to mix it and you are now considered a genius? I guess I don't blame peoples standards for being so low nowadays with all the drivel thrown out there.
Hip hop in itself is a simplified genre of music. Think of it's history, and realize that it's modern western rebellious/youthful alternative (rock) dwarfs it in rich diverse evolution, innovation and experimentation... You could take me back to 1800's and I could do Beethoven's Bagatelle No. 25 in A minor on a kazoo with maracas and tambourine backing for "style" and you can call it unique, but what would be it's merit? Yao and Dwight both have been called the best centers in the NBA... Who were their peers? Sure it is... Rap isn't even close to half a century old...
The problem is that there are a lot of good and exciting things out there. Now more than ever its necessary to sift through an increasingly large mess of garbage driven by media and money. All the same it doesn't mean that the things shoved into our faces are indicative of the state of the music or art world. Just like any other era, there are beautiful things under the surface and real progress being made. Some of these things may be more appreciated at a later time.
You have just described almost all rap music. So is your contention that no rap artist can be considered a genius? It kind of sounds like you don't have a whle lot of respect for rap as an art form in general. If so, then fair enough.
The sounds of college dropout, graduation, late registration, and even MBDTF to me were just simply perfectly done. And he isnt NAS/Tupac/EarlyEminem lyrically but he is definitely far above average in those albums. I would say his work on those albums were genius to those who enjoy that type of music. I can count on them to get me in the zone when I am at work whenever needed. With that said he just tries to keep creating something different and now he flopped on this last album. And it appears it is hard to be humble when you stuntin on a jumbotron, as he has lost it mentally. If I ever see him out on the street one day I would open hand slap him in hopes to bring him back to reality and ask him to make another late registration.
jazzy jeff would be raking in the money if he'd been in this era. i used to love kanye. my hs friend met up in ny to attend a concert of his back in 04. Now, he is just full of himself. It's been a rapid transformation from a good music mind to just straight up tom foolery.
