Well I'm glad you see my original point now, which is that the Chinese aren't interested in becoming a 'Superpower' like the US because they aren't that egotistical and power hungry. The only country interested in that and acting in that manner is the US as you have pointed out in your last post. The US has army bases all around China: in Japan, Korea, Philippines, Singapore and Australia so I'm sure you understand now that their increase in military spending is purely defensive. China has actually been the world's most prosperous and advanced country for the majority of the last 2000 years yet it historically has not shown the desire to 'take over the world', in fact it even wanted to shut itself off to the world in the 15th century.
What are you monkeys even debating about. Which country is more evil? Which country has your best interest in mind?
You are aware they have territorial disputes with Japan, Korea, the Philippines and Vietnam, right? They've also subsidized their industries to kill off competition. There was a EU ban on Chinese Solar Panels a while back because of this concern and China responded by banning imports of EU wine.
Maybe 6 in the morning where you are. I don't get why you think I'm trolling? Everything I wrote was true, look it up yourself.
A country that calls itself the "Middle / Central Nation" is certainly egotistical. Also that 2000 years of Chinese history there has been frequently periods of expansion including conquest of neighboring countries by Han Chinese. While the Ming did turn inward and closed off the country prior to that Emperor Yongle did send out Admiral Zheng He on naval missions that also compelled many countries to become tributaries of the the Chinese rule. In a similar way the current Chinese leadership is using soft economic power to push Chinese interest throughout the world while closer to home are ramping up their military power to press claims against neighboring countries.
Haha oh wow. This has anything to do with the current communist party how? Are you just trolling ? If you tried to argue that China is aiming to be a bully right now as pay back for all its woes at the hands of foreign powers during the Qing dynasty and before WW2, as juvenile as it maybe, you might actually sound sane.
The post I was responding to was talking about 2,000 years of history not just the current communist party. I don't see what that has to do with anything. I was just pointing out that China does have ego and aspirations to be a major power. Are you saying that it is silly to think that China doesn't?
Actually I don't see what is so egotistical about that? I find people who go around naming places after themselves far more egotistic.
Really? So calling yourself "the center of the World" isn't egotistical? Sure that is egotistical too but doesn't mean that China isn't egotistical or has aspirations to power.
Though I do have to say China's increased military spending and modernization is pretty much justified. It's currently the 2nd largest economy in the world with the largest population, and as a percentage of total GDP its military spending is actually quite low. China is spending about 2% of its GDP in its military, a much smaller percentage than the US (4.4%), Russia (4.5%), England (2.5%), France (2.3%), Saudi (8.9%), India (2.5%), South Korea (2.7%) etc.
What's there to learn for China? And I fail to see how US outfoxed China in this case. Philippines was an ex US colony and have been a very close ally to the US ever since we beat the Spanish. Philippines is designated as a major non Nato ally, and used to house a US military base till the 90s. So of course the US will have a much stronger support response than China in this case. China's small aid package is probably by design. China's relationship with Philippines is luke-warm in the best of times and obviously right now is not the best of times, given Philippines history with the US even if China provided a billion dollar aid package they still know it'll not swing Philippines away from the US,,, so why bother.
So what? Every country has territorial disputes. India and Japan individually have about as many territorial disputes as China does, but you never hear about them. Furthermore, every country subsidizes their industries. For example, the US agricultural industry probably wouldn't survive without the massive inflow of tax money from the federal government. In fact, the US spends far more money on subsidization of domestic industries than just about any other nation on earth; it's just done in a less efficient and direct manner. WTO disputes are irrelevant; the US banned a boatload of EU products for decades attempting to force them to accept hormone treated US beef. On topic: I'm not sure what people are expecting of China. Despite its GDP, it's not a rich country by any means. They have their own natural disasters to tend to. How many middle income countries, which is what China is, made sizable donations? When you factor in the Philippines being a major US ally as others have said, it's really not that surprising that China didn't bother.
That being respected a superpower means more than being the block's biggest bully. I see you haven't learned this lesson yet.
No, being a respected power (China is not a superpower) means you are friendly toward your allies and you sometimes bully countries you have disputes with. Outside of the early days of our country, I can't remember any period in American history in which we didn't "bully" countries we deemed was enemies or had disputes with us.
Bringing up history is a good parallel - China tends to act like a 19th century America and trots out similar excuses for its expansionism.
